Windows 10: USB recognized but error message displayed 'insert disk in drive'

Never faced this problem before. New Sandisk USB 3.0 256GB pen drive; worked perfectly on my Windows 10 laptop and I managed to transfer about 15 GB of data on it.

Drive disconnected so i removed and re-inserted. Also renamed the drive. Managed to transfer another few files before it disconnected again.

Removed and re-inserted again, USB appeared listed under new name as D:/ but is not accessible. On clicking on it, error message is received 'insert drive in D:/'. Also, on the quick access panel on the left of 'This PC' window, I can see all the files on the drive but not able to open any of them. Same error message is received.

Can not even format the drive as same error message is being received. Any help would be welcome please.

Usb flash drive, please insert disk into drive error?

i updated my computer and updated windows as the hardware troubleshooter suggested and that did not work

i tried diskpart and tried going through disk management as admin it does let me pick to change as the above pics show and i have windows 10 64 bit the usb is a monster digital 16gb usb

It seems that your USB is having an issue. We suggest running Check Disk to find and repair errors in the USB drive. To do so, please follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + X and then select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Copy and paste chkdsk E: /f, then hit Enter.

Please use chkdsk E: command to check the integrity of your USB drive.

Note: Change "E:" to the USB drive letter you're using.

I understand that you get an error, ‘USB device not recognized’ when connecting a USB drive. I’ll certainly assist you with the issue.



However, please let us know:

• May I know the update that was installed? To check go to
  Start >> Settings >> Update & Security >> Windows Update >> View update history.
  
• Does the issue occur with only one USB drive?
  
• Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? Refer
  Which version of Windows operating system am I running?
  

I would suggest you to try plugging the USB to a different USB port and check if that helps. You can also try connecting the USB to a different computer and check.



Meanwhile, I would suggest you to refer the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the article
Error: “USB Device not recognized" when you try to access
a USB external hard drive except Method 1 & 2 and see if that makes any difference.
