Windows 10: USB to HDMI converter does not work with Windows 10

I have an Acer Aspire V17 Nitro laptop (i7, 16 Gb RAM) which I am using with an external monitor (through the built-in HDMI port).

I recently purchased a USB to HDMI converter so that I could have a second external monitor. This was advertised as being applicable for Windows 7 and 8.1 systems so I figured it should work for Windows 10 also.

Unfortunately when I installed the software, the system crashed. Eventually I managed to restore it to an earlier point so I managed to get the system back to normal. However I cannot seem to be able to find any way of getting this device to work on my laptop. I tried allowing Windows to find the best driver, and even tried a third-party driver that I found on the internet but to no avail.

When I contacted the supplier he said that he had written to his own supplier about this but got no reply, so he offered me half of what I had paid for it as a refund. I accepted this but would really like to be able to use the device.

Has anyone any ideas (Links to similar issues, drivers etc) as to what I can do?

They don't have any new drivers.

I got my hands on a USB-C to HDMI converter. Once I plugged in the monitor this way, it works. Does that help pinpoint the issue?

Your best bet is to contact the developer. We would be clueless as to how their software/hardware works

 

If running the setup fails, you could try to manually install the driver from Device Manager. Click on the search icon and type device, then click to open Device Manager. Since the device is not yet installed it should have a yellow mark on it. Right-click on the device and select update drivers. Then select the last option, then the last option again, until you see a Have disk button. Click this button and browse to the folder where you extracted the driver files (you can do that by opening the installer in WinRAR). Select the first device on the list and proceed to install it, no matter if Windows warn you it cannot verify compatibility. Assuming you are lucky and you don't get a BSOD, restart the computer for changes to take effect.

 

Did you try running setup in compatibility mode?

 

Ok thanks to all of you who suggested solutions. First of all the provided driver file is an EXE so I could not do a manual install. Instead I tried again but this time I took more note of what was happening. The install had an inbuilt checker (or maybe it was Windows 10 looking out for me) but anyhow it suggested an earlier version so I selected windows 7 compatibility but even after it "successfully" completed, on restart I once again had problems (blue screen), and once again a system restore saved the day.
The driver in question is called Thin2000 and is by Fresco Logic. On their website they do suggest that it is best to use the driver only for the stated O/Ses which range up to windows 8 (but not 10). And they advise to keep watching for an upgrade. Which doesn't help much.

 

Install WinRAR and try to open the driver in WinRAR. If it is a self-extracting executable you should see the files and then extract them to a folder for the manual installation.
