  1. USB Woes

I plugged a thumb drive (I tried several) into the USB ports on my desktop (I tried several), while it would make the sound that something had been plugged in, the drive did not not show up in explorer.

I looked in device manager and it was showing up in "other devices" with the yellow exclamation point. I tried to "update the driver" and got an error "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them". "USB Mass Storage Device"

Doing some digging I saw that one solution was to go to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and uninstall each and re-boot. Also of note....I do NOT see the USB Mass Storage Device driver in the list of US B drivers under that menu....based on what I've seen in looking for a solution, I'm led to believe it should be there.

I uninstalled USB Root Hub USB 3.0, they both came back as expected on reboot, however now my logitech wireless keyboard will not work (the logitech wireless mouse does). I now see under "Other Devices" the thumb drive (with a yellow exclamation point"; an "Unknown device" with a blue tooth symbol when I click on it (and yellow exclamation point); and finally one called "USB Receiver" (with a yellow exclamation point).

Under "Keyboards" I see the Logitech Keyboard, which claims "this device is working properly" but it is not.

How do I get my thumb drive ability back and how do I get my keyboard back?

I made no real changes to the computer, I just noticed it out of the blue this morning.

    Thank you for any input.

Installing windows off of a USB stick

    Step By Step from vista:
    From admin cmd prompt

    1. diskpart
    1a. list disk
    2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
    3. clean
    4. create partition primary
    5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32
    8. assign
    9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk

    USB boot for bios update

Did the first step. It already doesn't work. Note the capacities and drive letters M:/N: The HP utility is about to format my raid-1 volume containing my 2 750gb drives. It thinks it's the usb stick. I can not select any other drives in the HP utility. My 512mb usb stick is U:.

    Any other suggestions?
