Windows 10: User-installed Application Icons on Start Menu went away.

Yet another reason I think the W10 release was premature. By about a year!

After pinning some user-installed applications to the Start Menu they looked fine. Today, all the icons that should be displayed in the buttons are gone. To determine what a given button does I have to hover over it, and the title appears in text. They still work to institute execution but are surely not the intuitive, user-friendly stuff we are suppose to applaud in W10.

Like my other problems of this nature, restart does nothing to correct the problem. And I cannot remove and reinstall the buttons since a right-click on them does absolutely nothing. All Windows provided buttons still have their icons, but right clicking on them does nothing either. I can drag-and-drop the icons around on the right side but cannot even resize them since a right-click is useless.

Nokia 5800 goes crazy after I update software with Nokia Suite

I have a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Last week I installed Nokia Suite on my PC for the first time.



When I connected my 5800 PC Suite told me I needed to update my phone software. So OK I followed the instructions and updated my software.



That is when the fun started. I went to the Menu screen and tapped on Applications. The Applications icon went grey and the phone just sat there. After a few minutes the grey went away I tried it again and it worked.



Then I went to the Menu screen and tapped on Gallery. The Gallery icon went grey and the phone just sat there. After a few minutes the grey went away and I was able to go to Gallery.



Another time I went to the Menu Screen and tapped on Applications. All of the icons, except for the last row disappeared. A few minutes later the icons came back and I was able to go to Applications.



When an Menu Screen icon goes grey and the phone stops, I can sometimes select a different icon and that icon will work, sometimes the newly selected icon will grey out and the phone sits.



I've used Nokia Chat Support for two times taking more than four hours. The best they could suggest is for me to back up the phone, and do the factory reset. Needless to say the factory reset didn't work, and I am stuck setting up most of my personalization
all over again, for a phone that has lost its mind.



This is clearly a known Nokia problem. There are similar posts out there with thousands of reads. Someone, somewhere knows how to fix this. Any ideas?

 

Critical Error Message - Your Start Menu is not working

Had the same issue, but after uninstalling DropBox the issue went away and start menu works again.

Did not need to create a new user

 

Note how the icons for all my user-installed applications are missing. (They were there for a while but went away and I can not find any way to get them back.)

The second picture shows the text description of the application if I hover over the button. Other than that, it is impossible to know what any given icon on the right side for user-installed applications represents. The "All Apps" menu is also missing the icons but the text is always present. (Please excuse the poor quality but I am using a coffee can as a tripod for the 1/2 second exposures.)

 

I restored one of my other computers. This is how they should look, both on the right side and on the "All Apps" menu.

Are you using the native right-click "Pin to Start" in All apps or some other method?

They are no longer called icons. They are tiles or live tiles.

I'm having no such problem with tiles.

Thanks for the reply. I did search for others having the problem, and haven't really come upon it. And in this case, only the user-installed applications are involved (as opposed to the last post I list at the end, where all are involved).

This particular computer has given me fits. Two other computers upgraded with no problem. One a pure 32-bit machine, one a 64-bit machine running a 32-bit OS. This one is a pure 64-bit machine with a lot of 32-bit software installed. For the problems I had with installation (very long, and boring, but it showed all the attempts that failed which should have worked) see this:.

Yes, I understand that it's not the functionality of the tile link, but rather the disappearance of the picture (icon) on the tile. I would tend to think that this is a registry entry that is disappearing for some reason. If attempting to install older programs they may be using COM-based components to store configuration information in the Registry. Just a guess.

You may be better off simply placing icons on the desktop, create toolbars on your Taskbar (Quick Launch), or install Classic Shell.

 

I thought about that, but whenever I can tolerate "stock" system features, I do. One problem is a sister who lives 1200 miles away, and gets help from the gurus at the local library but expects me to bail her out when they can't. So I like to keep both systems as close to the same as possible so both the library geeks and the computer weenie (me) are on the same page. Even the fact that she uses IE and I use Firefox is sometimes a problem since I have to bring up IE, with which I am not instantly an expert, to try to find the problem. I had high hopes for Edge for just that reason. November will tell on that, I guess.

 

Could only stand the highly-touted "Return of the Start Menu" so long. Installed Classic Shell.

 

That may be the wisest choice for you, ARYLIOA. Some don't like the Modern and see it's potential. If one needs to use a computer for work, then one needs it working personably proper so to be productive.

I find it highly annoying that MS has not build in a simple tool to simply "rescan" your programs folder(s) for programs with .exe extensions so that they entire startup menu could be rebuilt with the click of a button!

Some developer should get that in the Windows store under Utilities and make a fortune at this point in the evolution of Windows 10 as it is clearly needed by many many early adopters like the guy above and myself as well!

Any program whether Win32 or Win RT can be pinned to the right side of the Start menu via All apps by right clicking on the app tiltle and choose "Pin the Start. However, if you must, open File explorer highlight or open C:/Program files. Enter *.exe into search then press Enter. It finds all the .exe programs. Right click to "Pin to Start".
