Windows 10: User profile failed to load and sign-in & file recovery C/USERS

Hi, I powered up my laptop recently and I encountered a strange problem. At start-up, it couldn't load my Microsoft account - even if I entered the correct sign-in details "The user profile service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded.", so I restarted it and almost everything from my desktop was gone. Even the profile picture of my Microsoft account was gone, but the name and the email address were still there.

I found out a few minutes later that everything was stored in my main C/User profile folder. So I took out the files from C/User, put everything back as it was before, and restarted again. Then it suddenly went back to normal, it started recognizing my Microsoft account and I was able to log in. The problem was that now everything disappeared from the desktop again and I couldn't find anything in my C/User folders. Any ideas on how to recover those files? The two affected folders are Desktop and Downloads.

Now when I go to profiles, I can see my Microsoft account fully working but there's another account next to it without a profile picture that when I click on it it has the same name and email as the main one.

Is the other account the one with my files on? If so, do I need to select it and restart?

Hello,

When attempting to login to my computer, I get the following message:

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in.

User profile cannot be loaded."

I referred to this Help article,You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error
message,

but the only difference is I only have one user profile on this computer. So, I can't login with another user to go through the steps listed in this post.

Any suggestions?

Before we start troubleshooting the issue, we require more information to narrow down the issue.

• Did you make any changes to the account prior to the issue?
• Are you able to login with the Guest accounts?
• How exactly did you access C drive? Are you able to access the desktop?

I suggest you to restart the computer once and check if you are able to login to the computer.

Brink:
I am using registry editor from command prompt. Drilled down to c:windows\system32\config inside the Load Hive dialog window. Have selected (checked box) the SAM file; clicking on Open opens error message that says:


SAM
This file is in use.
Enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program.

I am at a loss, since I am not running any other program!

Any suggestions?

The SAM file is listed as being 64KB file size.
