It's like comparing an orange to a pear. IMO, comparing Linux to Windows is a bit .. well.. silly. If anyone likes Linux that much use it and don't use Windows. With VMs many use both simultaneously. Since I don't have a tablet or smart phone I don't need drab to get the machine to boot. My 486 video card only had 1 MB ram but the W95 desktop looked better than W10.

I wish I could use this theme on KDE Plasma (would look good ported to Windows too I think)

    Unfortunately the link is dead

    Hi there

If you want to risk it the plasma on KDE 5 looks absolutely AWESOME (and you can replicate AERO glass too if you want). Choose the OXYGEN BLACK theme -- positively eye dropping. KDE 5 isn't 100% stable yet so don't install on a running work / everyday machine outside a VM though.

Even on a VM it's fine -- but you'll need your VM (and hence host machine) to support decent 3D graphics -- workstation 10 is fine - issues with workstation 11 -- KDE 5 is just too new for VMware to have tested it ---works fabulous on a REAL machine if you can spare one. Download any live KDE distro and then update the KDE 4 / 4.4 workspace to the KDE 5 plasma workspace --brilliant. Ms should perhaps look at people in THEIR OWN I.T server rooms where some of them do run test LINUX systems on their own machines -- and copy some of the screen effects.

However as I said before some tasks are better suited to a plain desktop - such as serious photoshop work - I switch to a plain grey one.

So by all means allow users to CHOOSE. This is where it's easier for LINUX as the video is supplied by XORG or what used to be called the X-Server and then you could fire up any GUI (desktop) you liked such as GNOME, KDE, LXFCE or many other ones. Ms went down that stupid .NET route which rather made doing this whole process impossible or very difficult. Perhaps a re-modelling of the GUI could make switching / applying desktop effects easier in Windows.

My main point was that Windows could easily supply people with magnificent desktops if they wanted to - it's just the cackhanded manner in how Ms decided to implement the GUI with that crazy .NET stuff. I'm not suggesting the useability of Windows is changed -- it's just that the hardware (for most people) is so much more powerful these days so wht not give them a choice - and on the whole I LIKE colourful desktops. !!!

    Cheers

I noticed that and I want to see it but so far I like the concept. I'm not sure you can call that a concept

High contrast is not a style either
A user could accomplish a black taskbar before in the other builds or even now in win-7 it's no big deal,
If 10 looks the same Microsoft gains really nothing more than 8.1 did 15%

Probably more people testing 10 than actually using 8.1 *Tongue

I also like to personalize the desktop. But that is not that bad, to my eye at least.

I noticed that and I want to see it but so far I like the concept. It may just be that dwm is off for some reason. Like when my Aero doesn't take on W8 the taskbar is black until I hit it again. Black is probably the transparency color.

I think this whole topic is senseless...

If people don't like transparency, turn it off. If they want a black taskbar, just change the color. If people want to change it up, let them.

Why is this even being talked about? I am sure Microsoft is clever enough to come up with some solution, then again???

  10. When you get to my age you like eye candy. I like my computers to look nice. Modern graphics cards can throw windows around like they are polygons in not time or effort at all. So I say give users he choice of the bling and if we have stuck windows 10 on the tired old banger which has a poor "bling" capability then we can use the old Windows 2000 type classic desktop. That is a necessary option for lab computers in any case as they are more interested in accuracy than flashy graphics.

It's a legitimate topic for discussion. If for some reason you don't like the topic then simply don't open the thread.

I believe MS's intention with the dark task bar is thumbnail highlights.
Depending on the color you choose for your windows headers, Start Menu, etc., Windows will add a subtle shade of that color to the dark task bar.
So, if you choose blue, the task bar will be a very dark navy blue; if you choose red, the task bar will be a very dark red wine shade.
The main aspect of the feature seems to be that now your active and inactive thumbnails will be highlighted with your chosen color.
Pretty cool but it still does not leave much room for customization though! *Sad

I spent a little bit of time on my last theme so I would like to continue to be able to do that!
    (I'll investigate the DWM thing)

(Don't think I'd pull this off in Build 9901!)

  15. So MS is planning to introduce one of the most useless "features" of the OS X and Unity GUIs to W10? *Sick
