Windows 10: Using an old computer's name on a new replacement

    Using an old computer's name on a new replacement


    I am getting a new computer to replace one that died. I'd like to use the old computer's name as other devices are linked to it in a home network. Will this cause any problems?

    He has no good reason to suggest a new case... unless he means you can't use a large air cooler in your case. No idea.

    We appreciate you getting back to us. To change the cmd name, we suggest that you follow this steps:

    • Open a Command Prompt (Adimin) window: Win+X, A, Alt+Y
    • Then run the following command to change your computer name to Donner: WMIC ComputerSystem where Name=COMPUTER-NAME call Rename Name=NewName
    • Reboot your PC.
    • Try to run ipconfig / all command, you should find that the Host Name in Windows IP Configuration list has been changed to the new name.

    Keep us posted with the result.

    Hi Brink

    I used Option 1 to change the name and that worked, however when I open up my home network the list contains both the new name as well as the old. If I select the old it is not found and asks to check it is connected. Can I remove this from the list of items?
