Windows 10: Using Onenote simultaneously with a lecture video

Hello, I am a medical student using a Surface Pro 6 with Windows 10 and I have a unique question that I find myself stumped on. I'll preface my question with the problem I've encountered over the last few days. While watching school lectures on my external monitor, connected to my surface, I have been trying to simultaneously write down notes in Onenote to become a more active learner. Our videos are convenient in that we have the ability to use the space-bar and arrow keys to pause or skip through the video, which makes the process of note-taking less of a chore. However, this keyboard functionality stops working when I start writing down my notes on OneNote as it is now the "active program" and not the video itself. For instance, after writing my notes, if I press the left arrow key to move the video back 15 seconds, OneNote will instead show my cursor moving left while the video keep playing unabated. This brings me to my question, is there anyway for me to retain the ability to navigate my video using my keyboard while still taking notes on OneNote? Any help would be appreciated.

Send to onenote

Hi,

It may be an issue with the add ins in OneNote, we suggest that you disable OneNote add-on and enable it. To do so, follow the steps below:

Open Internet Explorer.

Click Manage add-ons.

On the left pane, click Toolbars and Extensions.

On the right hand side of the page check for Send to OneNote add-on. Highlight
Send to OneNote and click on disable.

Once the add-on is disabled highlight the add-on again and enable it.

Note: To enable the File menu in Internet Explorer press the
Alt key on your keyboard.

You may also perform an online repair in Office 2007, to do an Online repair, follow the steps below:

Press Windows + X.

Click Control Panel.

Click Programs and Features.

Right click Microsoft Office, click Change.

Choose Online repair.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

What is new with OneNote in the classroom

Today, we are rolling out updates for the OneNote Class Notebook add-in, including new Learning Management System (LMS) and Student Information System (SIS) assignment and grade integration for Edsby. OneNote Class Notebook improvements

With this update we made several additions and improvements for the Class Notebook add-in (version 1.7.0), including:

Assignment and grade integration with Edsby. (see video at source)

Schoology assignment and grade integration improvements.

Skooler assignment and grade improvements.

Add some fun to your notebooks with new sticker packs

One of the most popular education features we’ve added to OneNote over the past year has been stickers! We’ve seen teachers use and customize stickers in lots of fun and personalized ways. Today, we are launching two new sticker packs: Silly Supplies and Cacti Friends.

Improve reading comprehension with Learning Tools updates

We’re also rolling out a new version of the OneNote Desktop Learning Tools add-in (version 1.4.0), which improves reading comprehension by:

Improved Syllables accuracy for English.

Added Syllables functionality for four new languages—French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Improved word detection and highlighting for Chinese and Japanese.

Transition to HelpShift for Support email.

Noun, verb and adjective highlighting will be coming to Spanish, French, German and Italian later this summer.

More updates to support you in the classroom

Find credible sources and content right within OneNote—Researcher is now rolling out in OneNote, making it easy for you to research your essay topic, create outlines and add sources—all without leaving the app. This means you can stay focused and save time, all while researching your topic. Researcher in OneNote for Windows 10 requires an Office 365 subscription, and is also available in Word on Windows desktops and Macs.

Take your Class Notebooks with you—Now you can save a copy of your notebook to your work or personal OneDrive. We know students or teachers move schools and classes; now your notes don’t have to be left behind at the end of the school year. Learn how in just a few steps.

Redesigned OneNote for Windows 10 now available—Last month, we announced the new design for OneNote, which enhanced usability for those who use assistive technologies, simplified navigation controls and created consistency across devices. Now it is fully available on OneNote for Windows 10.

OneNote October roundup

This month, the OneNote team focused on updating our Android app to launch new features and bring back some fan favorites. We are also introducing new ways to embed content types and improving usability on shared devices.

New to the OneNote for Android app

Password protected sections—Now you can open sections that have been password protected on other devices, letting you access sensitive information on the go. We’re happy to make this top user request available.

Multi-window support—OneNote works side-by-side with other Android apps that have multi-window support. For example, now you can take notes on a PowerPoint deck you’re reading or while doing research on the web.

Available again in the Android app

Audio recording—OneNote works the way you want, letting you take notes by typing, inking, clipping from the web and now by recording audio. A recording is a natural way to capture notes and ideas on the go, giving you the ability to easily record a lecture or practice your accent as you learn a new language.

Insert embedded files—Easily insert and open any Office file or PDF that you saved into OneNote to review your docs on the go.

Coming soon to OneNote for Android app

Look for the ability to edit and personalize your section tabs directly in the Android app and easily go back and undo changes to your notes to make sure your ideas are written just the way you want them.

Embed content into OneNote

We’ve added the ability to embed new types of content right onto the OneNote canvas. In addition to YouTube and Vimeo, you can now embed Office 365 Videos and Repli.it. With Repli.it, you can show executable code snippets right in OneNote to teach inline with your notes and lesson plans. To learn more about OneNote and Repli.it, check out our blog last month.

In addition to the new content types, we have added single sign-on (SSO) authentication for embedded Office files. Once you sign in to view one embedded document, you automatically will be signed in to view the rest.

Use shared Windows devices more effectively in the classroom

Shared cart PC for OneNote is a new OneNote for Windows 10 feature to benefit schools that share devices among students and still want to provide a personalized experience for each of them. Before class begins, teachers can assign any student any shared Windows 10 PC. When students sign in to the shared PC, new OneNote features help them use their personalized OneNote across multiple shared PCs by doing the following:

Office 365 sign-in credentials roam with students when they sign in to OneNote for Windows 10.

New syncing indicator makes it easier to manage content saving to the cloud, including attachments, so students never lose work when they leave their shared PC.
