  1. Variety of issues with File Explorer and search box

    Hello,

I seem to be having a variety of issues all of a sudden with File Explorer and the search box in the taskbar. I haven't installed anything new in that time or downloaded any files which may contain viruses, and I have run my anti-virus checks, and they said there were no viruses or malware, so I don't know why these are happening.

    1. File Explorer seems to be taking up a fair amount of CPU usage in the background when it isn't running and therefore when I am playing games or something, it causes everything to slow down. I have looked up solutions for this, and they said to restart it in Task Manager, which brings me on to the second problem;

    2. File Explorer freezes the computer any time that I restart or end the task using Task Manager; the taskbar disappears and any open programs become completely unresponsive, so I have to CTRL-Alt-DEL out of it to restart the computer.

    3. File Explorer also sometimes crashes when I try to edit the metadata of files MP3 music files in this case; the program completely freezes and takes me back to the aforementioned second problem.

    4. The search box won't let me search anything - it seems to work for about 2-3 seconds, but then it closes all by itself every single time there are no busy processes in the background or anything.

I do have OneDrive and Dropbox on my computer and I have had them for at least a couple of years, but they have been working flawlessly up until this point, so I don't know if they are any causes of these problems.

I did also try to do a System Restore, but it came up with an error message saying it "failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point" 0x8007045b.

I look forward to hearing back from someone as to how I can fix these problems.

    Thanks,

    Elliott

    :)

  2. File Explorer Search Not Working

I am trying to search in File Explorer (Windows Explorer, My Computer) and it will not find anything. I can copy text from a name in the list and paste it in the search box and it still finds nothing. I have looked at the suggestions that have been posted and nothing I find that is relative to this works. Anyone have any suggestions? I am running Win 10 Pro on an I3 coustom desktop computer.

    File Explorer - Search box

    Hello,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am sorry to know that you are facing issues with Windows 10.

If you're having problems locating specific files, folders, or other items on your computer, try using the Search and Indexing troubleshooter to fix the problem. It makes sure that the Windows Search service is running, and checks
to see whether you have the correct permissions to search all the directories on your computer.

I would suggest you to try the below methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Go to Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click
Troubleshooting. Click View all, and then click
    Search and Indexing.

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to reset the Windows explorer. Please follow the steps:

    1. Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc and locate for Windows Explorer.

    2. Right click on the
Windows Explorer and click on End task.

    3. On top of the Task Manager click on
File and click on Run new task.

    4. Type
explorer.exe inside the box and hit Enter.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.
