Windows 10: Via HD Audio - Sound and Mic not working

Ah, so near so far... If I try to play an MP3 or view a video it says that it's in a format that is not supported, and when I click on the Playback devices I get this error again:

I e-mailed ASUS tech support asking for help and this is part of their reply:
For this issue, please firstly ensure that the speaker has been as the default device under the sound option in the Control Panel, then switch to the Enhance option, uncheck all the options here and try again.
If right click the audio controller in the device and choose to unistall it, then reboot the OS and check if the system would auto reload the audio driver for the system.
Then please ensure that the Windows update has been enabled, and the available updates have been installed.
If still, I suggest you to use the compatibility mode install the Windows 8 audio driver in your OS for a test.

I had already attempted their first couple of suggestions but they didn't work. I tried again but they still didn't work.

Then I downloaded and installed their new drivers. It didn't work the on first two attempts. My third attempt finally worked. I did it in a little different order. Here are my steps:

Go the Device Manager

Expand "Audio inputs and outputs"

Right click each entry and click "Uninstall". If it asks if you want the drivers deleted, click "yes"

Right click "Sound video and game controllers"

Right click "VIA HD Audio" and click uninstall. If it asks if you want the drivers deleted, click "yes"

Download the drivers from the ASUS reply (above).

Unpack them, right click the "setup.exe" file, click "properties", click the "Compatibility" tab, tick "Run this program in compatibility mode" and choose "Windows 8". Click "Apply"

Right click "Setup.exe" and click "Run as administrator".

Let the drivers install and reboot.

Now set up your microphone.

The drivers installed are interesting:

With the standard Win 10 installation, in the "Device Manager/Audio inputs and outputs", there were entries for Microphone and Headset. With the newly installed drivers, there was only an entry for microphone. In both cases the driver was Microsoft version 10.0.10240 dated 2015/07/09. Edit: If anyone is still experiencing this problem, it would be interesting to see what would happen if the only thing you did was to delete "headset" from the device manager.

With the standard Win 10 installation, the "Device Manager/Sound video and game controllers/VIA HD Audio" driver was VIA 6.0.11.800. The newly installed driver is "VIA 6.0.11.200 dated 2013/11/01"(installed in Win 8 compatibility mode)

Thankfully (and frustratingly) both the mic and speakers are now working.

Hopefully others that are having this problem will find this helpful.

I went around and around with this problem too (ASUS S500CA microphone would not work after Win10 upgrade). After much frustration the fix ended up being very simple. From device manager, under: sound, video and game controllers select VIA HD or VIA HD(Win10) driver, select update driver, choose "browse computer," then "let me pick from list," then select the generic High Definition Audio driver (not any of the VIA HD choices) install, restart, fixed.

Interestingly, an update changed my driver back to VA HD(win10) today, microphone stopped working again. I quickly fixed by changing it back to generic driver.

Funny but half a year later I encountered similar problem.

This solution fixed the problem of mike with headphones, however no I don't have any sound working without headphones...

Any simple ideas how to fix? (ASUS, Windows 64 x)

To Fix:
1. Go to -
VIA Driver Download Portal
VIA Drivers and Support Packages Download
2. Download and Save Version V11.1100e Dated: 29-Jan-2016.
3. Disconnect from your Internet Network (ifwireless, de-select Connect Automatically).
4. Open Device Manager.
5. Go under the Sound, Video and Game Controllersfield, right-click VIA HD Audio, select Uninstall and also Delete The DriverSoftware For This Device, then restart your computer. **Stay Off Of TheInternet**
6. Extract the files from the installer .zip file.In those, double-click Setup.
7. Install the VIA HD Audio and restart yourcomputer.
8. Re-connect to your Internet Network.
