Got subject BSOD error about 85%+ of the way through. Ended up in a continuous restart loop after that *cry with a message saying I needed to restart the update just before each reboot *Mad.

Still trying to restore from backup.

Anyone know how to avoid or fix this problem?

    Windows 10 1709 Update Problem

Thank you for your help Greg

I've done a manual install of Fall Creator Version 1709 with the same result,

VIDEO DXGKRNL FATAL ERROR and as a consequence an inoperable machine.

Creator Version 1703 also does exactly the same thing.

I've blocked the download of 1709 and 1703 with the hide update tool but every time I turn on the PC Windows Update Assistant is downloading "the latest version of Windows 10" again.

I stop it fully downloading the unwanted updates by uninstalling the Windows Update Assistant but this is not very practical as Windows simply installs the assistant again.

When you power on are you able to view wallpaper/splash screen or desktop?
If possible please run the DM log collector and post a zip into the thread:
BSOD Crashes and Debugging - Windows 10 Forums

If you are unable to boot to wallpaper/splash screen or desktop perform the following steps:
    1) power on and as soon as you see the Microsoft icon power off.
    2) repeat power on and power off again when you view the Microsoft icon.
The timing is critical to be as soon as you see the Microsoft icon.
    3) power on again and this time see if it will advance to the computer's Windows advanced troubleshooting menu.
    4) If you are able to get to the windows advanced troubleshooting menu you can attempt:
    a) system restore (start with the oldest restore point and move to the newest)
if restore fails or if there are no restore points move to the next step
    b) startup repair
if startup repair fails move to the next step
    c) startup options > restart > select #6 safe mode with command prompt > type: sfc /scannow > then reboot
if startup options fails move to the next step
    d) command prompt > Administrator X:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe > type: sfc /scannow > then reboot
if this step fails ther are additional troubleshooting steps including the use of a bootable windows 10 iso.

I've restored the whole system from tape backup. So collecting the crash dump file isn't possible.

My main concern is how to prevent this recurring if I try to re-apply the "Fall Update" again.

Graphics card is ATI FireGL V7600, Device Manager reports level is 8.970.100.9001 dated 13/01/2015.

Please run the DM log collector and post a zip so that we can troubleshoot the logs.
The DM log collector will automatically collect msinfo32, dxdiag, event log, etc.
Depending on what is found in these logs we may need other logs for troubleshooting the upgrade failure.

The system was restored from backup tape, and entire disk drive has been completely over-written in the process, so it just isn't possible to collect the information you asked for, sorry.

There are many causes for upgrade failure and information is needed for troubleshooting.
This is a link of error codes, information about logs, and information about mitigating factors:

Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors - Windows IT Pro | Microsoft Docs

Without information you could view all of mitigating factors and perform as many as possible before attempting the next upgrade.

These are a sample of the mitigating factors:
    Mitigation Uninstall antivirus applications.
    Remove all unused SATA devices.
Remove all unused devices and drivers.
    Update drivers and BIOS.

Mitigation Ensure that all that drivers are updated.
Open the Setuperr.log and Setupact.log files in the %windir%\Panther directory, and then locate the problem drivers.
For more information, see Understanding Failures and Log Files.
Update or uninstall the problem drivers.

Info SP Rollback: Showing splash window with restoring text: Restoring your previous version of Windows.
Typically there is a a dump file for the crash to analyze. If you are not equipped to debug the dump, then attempt the following basic troubleshooting procedures:
    1. Make sure you have enough disk space.
    2. If a driver is identified in the bug check message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates.
    3. Try changing video adapters.
    4. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates.
    5. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

Well I tried vaping the graphics driver using DDU and tried again - got to Working on Updates 100% and then BANG - yes, you guessed it, VIDEO DXGKRNL FATAL ERROR BSOD.

Sad to say: "Windows could not complete the installation. To install WIndows on this computer, restart the installation", press Enter to OK button, followed by reboot, followed by the same message, followed by reboot etc ad nauseam

I tried booting into Safe Mode but that just behaved identically.

I'm up for collecting data if there's a good chance of a fix (I have the latest AMD driver for the Video Card, so if that needs a fix ...), if someone can tell me how to get in there and gather the necessary data.

I don't have a SA bootable W10 DVD, just the installation DVD. I do have (I think) somewhere a W7 bootable DVD. Failing that it is back to restoring (again) from the tape backup GRRR SNARL!!!!!

Hmmmm I booted from a W7 LiveCD but didn't work too well, reporting a "Windows Failed to Start" error.

Thinking about this issue, I get the the impression that the DM Log Collector only works to collect data from the running system, and I can't get there at present *Sad

So I'd like to help gather the necessary information, but am at somewhat of an impasse as I can't even boot to Safe Mode.

If you are able to get to the desktop and then open file explorer the operating system could be repaired with an in place upgrade repair.
If you cannot boot to windows then use the bootable windows 10 iso.
List of PC brands with their corresponding hot-keys

Identify the computer manufacturer on the list and boot to the USB external hard drive.
If the computer manufacturer is not on the list or if it is a custom computer you will need to change the bios boot order so that the USB is on top.
When booting to the windows 10 iso it may display the windows icon for 5 - 10 minutes while it is loading.
Choose the language, time, currency, and keyboard.
Don't click install as this is the method for a clean install (deleting partitions, formatting, making an unallocated drive and reinstalling windows.

Attempt each of the repair options:
system restore > use the oldest date and move forward
    startup repair

Here's what I just did booted from the Install DVD (F: is the main Windows partition).
    Code: chkdsk c: /f bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows c: bcdedit (output saved to F:\BCDEdit output.txt) cd boot attrib bcd -s -h -r ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old bootrec /RebuildBcd[/quote] Here's the content of the BCDEdit output:

Same old reboot loop

    Here's what I'll do next:

    • Boot up a standalone partition manager and save a copy of the Windows partition to another drive
    • Vape and restore the primary drive from tape backup.

Once that's completed, I wilI be able to dig files off the copy of the Windows partition and upload them wherever you wish.

So I saved the partition with all the upgrade logs and presumably the crash dump file. What can I extract from it to help to resolve this issue and to where should I upload it
