Lol! No one needs to type on a touch screen at a desk. I think you mentioned that you're not a fan of 8/8.1. That you "Passed it up", Yes?

Here in America there's card readers/touch screens at store checkouts, ATMs, cash registers, airports, ticket counters, rail depots, juke boxes, and the like. It's really nothing new here. Personally I have yet to see a touch screen monitor sitting on/at a desktop, save some all-in-ones. Most here would probably think that's ludicrous, although I've toyed with the idea for myself. Correct me if I'm wrong > I think you're missing the point. Windows 8/8.1 works just as well with keyboard and mouse just as any past OS. A touch screen is not needed or demanded. If you dislike the Modern/Metro design or layout of the system, that's a different story. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder > practicality is in the hands of the user.

As I've mentioned > I've toyed with the idea of using a touch screen on my desktop. I would use it as a primary screen and my present monitor as a secondary. A standard desk (top) is 30 inches (76.2cm) deep. If one places the monitor at the back it takes up approximately 8 to 10 inches (20cm to 25cm) so the face of the monitor is approximately 20 to 22 inches from the front of the desk. That's well within arm's reach. The question for me is whether or not it is practical. Personally I dislike the mouse. I'm a keyboarder until it comes to a browser. Not too much keyboard navigation in those. One can Tab key around, which is a PITA. There's Alt/left or right arrow for back or forward navigation to sites, up or down arrow keys for scrolling, Home or End, Page Up or Page Down, F4 for History/Favorites drop-down menu, Alt/S to post, and Alt/F4 to close it out. Other than that, one has to use a mouse, more or less, to be efficient. That list of shortcut keys may seem like a lot, but in reality it's not. At some point I have to reach for the mouse to click. I'd rather touch a screen. To me it would seem to be more efficient with some programs/apps.

Bottom line is that everyone has to find their own way. Whatever is more practical for an individual. There was touch in 7. Personally I'm glad MS expanded it in 8/8.1.

With that, I'll post with Alt/S....

  2. As a Still-Working Computer Tech, I have to know how to install, tweak and service all of the currently used OS's, so I have XP, 7, 8 and 8.1 on separate HD's on my main PC.
Because of some older programs that I still rely on every day, I use XP as my everyday OS.
But my next favorite OS would have to be 8.1, for its speed and versatility. The Classic Shell does make it look and act a lot like XP. And being able to re-enable Windows Mail, on the 64 bit version, makes getting my email very much like Outlook Express.
On the 32 bit ver., Thunderbird works Great.
My customers who have just bought a new PC and find themselves looking at a Metro screen, like the retro look, provided by Classic Shell.

Old folks don't like too many changes. *Rolleyes

  5. My neighbour has one, an HP running Windows 7 and she complains about it. She'd rather use the keyboard and mouse and says you've only got to touch the screen in the wrong place and things open you don't want.*Eek

I would imagine! *Eek Although there is touch in 7, the desktop is not scaled to the human fingers. That's why they developed 8/8.1, but that is only one of the many reasons why.

    Hi there
My favourite of all time was actually Windows 2003 SERVER which I modified slightly so it would work as a desktop OS - for instance remove nags about when you re-boot and add audio, user games, other multi-media and decent desktop effects and enable proper Internet browsing and access. - Stable as a rock -- far far better than XP - even though all the XP drivers would work on it. It was built on the stability of Windows NT and Windows 2000 and I still use it daily as a VM.

Windows 7 was a good OS too - and I'm actually quite liking W8.1 once I've fiddled around a bit with it - I don't think Touch is a bad thing for some applications - even on a desktop (or actually a laptop) and those "Convertible" type of PC's IMO are going to become the norm for I.T types and some consumers too rather than dedicated PC's or tablets. Windows 8.1 makes a good OS for these types of devices.

    Cheers

Like others I voted 8 thinking that it would also mean/include 8.1 which I really do enjoy using. Every once in a while I jump to 7 in VM Fusion, but am finding it just a little old looking lately. . .*Rolleyes

Windows 7 is what I'd have to vote. All around, it's been the most stable.

So far, Windows 8.1 surpasses all for performance
Bugs? Well, I wish I had some of the reported, and more common bugs, so that I could offer more help. No so!

  12. Windows 8 (8.1 to be specific *Smile) I've even got used to the Metro screens but Windows 7 is a super close 2nd, i loved Windows 7 from the get go... Windows 8 took a little more adapting but once i used it i can use it just as fluently as 7.

I'm the one vote so far for Vista. I have never, ever had a problem with it. It worked out of the box perfectly for what I did. Now my 18 year old has been using it since I got 7 and now 8 and he hasn't had a single issue either.

7 is a close 2nd though, and I haven't had a single issue with 8/8.1. Everyone got their undies in a bunch over it, but on a desktop, it's just fine. Take a little time to learn the changes, and get a start menu replacement and it's fine. Fast and surprisingly useful.

  14. Old people don't like change, and I'm OLD, so change comes really hard for me.
I've done a lot of experimenting with every new OS since XP, which I still run, and I must admit, that Windows 8.1 appears to be the most compatible version of the lot.
I can actually run programs now that I've not been able to run, since XP.

I spent several hours, a few nights ago, figuring out how to run an old 16 bit DOS command on 8.1. Call me devious, ingenious, or a technical Magician, but just don't call me a Hacker. *Rolleyes
My thanks to the guys at Redmond, who built a lot of little "back doors" in 8.1, to make it even more compatible with OLD software, than previous OS's.
I even got a script, to force a new restore point, to run in 8.1, which has not run on any OS since XP.

And a really big "Whoopie!" because I fingered out how to run an old 16 bit DOS game, that I bought on a floppy disk, in 1990. With a few tweaks, to the OS, it runs great on 8.1.

Yes, that's 8.1 + Classic Shell. Looks a lot like XP, don't it?

Now I'm anxious to see what else it can do. I do know it runs lightning fast on my 8 yr old PC.
