When I got serious about Win 8 upon the release of the second beta (loathed the first passionately, bug-ridden and crash-prone), I installed Classic Shell to get the 'traditional' start menu back. However, I also enabled the Quick-Launch toolbar, and subsequently found that I was using it and the Start screen more than the Start menu.
Upon installing the Win 8.1beta, I decided to give the 'improved' Start Screen/All Apps a fair chance so did not install any 3rd-party Start menu. I intensely dislike having either a desktop full of icons or a taskbar full of 'pinned' programs, so I enabled Quick-Launch, which holds all my most-used programs, and use the new All Apps screen as a start menu (set to sort by category) for everything else. This really does work well, better than the Start screen in Win 8, and is easily as good (though hugely different) as the old Start menu, imo.
I use desktop programs 99% of the time, as opposed to the built-in 'apps' (the weather being a major exception) and literally never see the Start screen unless by deliberate choice. I've not even bothered to pin anything to it or make any attempt to customise it, All Apps is so vastly superior.

I didn't like 8 but I do like 8.1. Looking forward to 8.2 to see what it brings. My all time favorite OS would be Windows 2000 workstation. Very reliable and it let me play my old games. =) I ran it for a long time. Windows 7 would be a very close second. That's what I voted for as 2K and 8.1 weren't listed.

 

Why would I need to explain myself? The hunches I have against it, is pretty much how bipolar the system is plus no "first party" start menu. Some options saw their location changed that doesn't make much change; mainly, from what I remember from the very little time I had with W8, the reginal/keyboard layout options and the things related to the "language bar". In Windows 7, It's two-three clicks max to remove it. In W8... it's hidden further under more clicks and windows. For me the negative outweights the positive.

I heard 8.2 will bring back an actual Start Menu among other things. If so, I *might* give in although I don't like that flat and boring theme.

Addendum: Secure wiping an SSD is a step that I really dislike doing before a clean install and, especially, doing a manual partition so the system reserved doesn't get created. ;\

Addendum 2: I feel like I'm surrounded by Win8 fanboys while the Win7 fanboys, although more numerous, gets packed and beaten up in a corner.

I would guess that a majority of members, other than those newly joined, are indeed.
"Fan boys" is a little vulgar, just keep it to enthusiasts who are seeing the latest OS though unjaundiced eyes, and trying to help others with their ongoing learning experiences. I would guess that if you are seeking unchallenged, out and out, criticism of Windows 8, you can get moral support in this forum, from the discontented users, but it is often counter challenged by the supporters.

By the way, are you a member, or are you aware, of the companion forum for Windows 7, you could get more sympathy for your views there, perhaps?

Lee's Comment, "Could you please explain as what you mean by disaster. Haven't had any problems to date, so not really understanding the term disaster.", was not intended as a rebuke or criticism. The member was expecting feedback, from which we may have been able to help you enjoy your Windows 8 experience a little.
The issue is that many of us have not had any problems large enough to term the OS as a "Disaster"

Some settings are a PITA to find through the charms bar. How to get to them isn't all that intuitive either. All in all though I still like 8.1 There are some settings in Windows 7 that are several menus deep too. You don't notice it so much when you actually know where your going to find that setting versus blindly clicking options until you find what you wanted. Windows 7 is a great OS, one of my all time favorites actually.

 

I’m sorry you feel that way. Seems to me that we’ll all have to agree to disagree. If you don’t care for 8 that is, of course, ok. But, personally I didn’t join 9F to get into “heated discussions” on 8/8.1, unless it relates to the anticipated 9 in some way. e.g. “Will it be like 8/8.1?” “Will it be different?” “Will MS continue in their new direction or will they revert back to the Desktop model?”

8/8.1 are what they are. We all know by now who likes and dislikes them, so I suggest we all just move on.

 

When reading the posts in this thread half of me feels I really lost out by never getting on the Win8 bandwagon and the other half doesn't...

Definitely must pay more attention to 8.2 when it is released...

 

Whether its g8t or you h8t seems to depend on whether you like Metro or not. At least that's how it seems to me. I haven't seen to many "its OK" posts. Those that like it seem to like it a lot. And vise versa. I've run all the pre-release versions and the final versions. I always seemed to be going back to 7 on my desktop PC's for one reason or another. Until 8.1 came about, now its staying.

I know that Windows 7 Forums is there to hate on Windows 8. However, most of the revelant news for the future Windows are not on Windows 7 so I have to, much to my disappointment, have to be on the other forums.

Some people will say that I'm against changes... Well, that's false. I jumped on in from XP to Vista and own two boxed copy (one of them That I won in a contest in W7F back in 2009 I believe) even though it has a very bad rep and, personally, had no problems with it but I did acknowledge its problems. I then tried some of the Win7 builds when it was still in development and immediately jumped on the bandwagon at release. However, after that, the more windows 8 was revealed the more I disliked it obviously because of Metro/Modern UI. Even though it could be controlled with keyboard and mouse, I just thought it was counter intuitive just looking at it and my mouse and keyboard. Even more on touchpad. The lack of Start menu is extremely disorienting and couldn't see myselff living without it and the Start Screen isn't its replacement for me. Installing a third-party app is just killing the purpose of upgrading.

Anyway...

 

Windows 7. Hoping Windows 9 can overthrow seven and XP. I really cannot stand metro, but the OS I use now is 8.1 with boot to desktop, lock screen gone and charms disabled.

 

I think MS realized their mistake and are making Win8.1 more customizable, as they should have done from the beginning.
Having said that, I am using Win8.1 on just about all my computers and have no issues using the start screen, just think everyone should have choices about the way their OS looks and how they prefer the UI to look/work.
I have my desktops and laptops boot to desktop, tablets boot to start screen.
