Ya got me there, Paul, because I'm a keyboard/mouse gal. I don't have Windows on anything more portable than a laptop. *Tongue

I had an old HP Envy x2, which is one of those hybrids (tablet/ lappy), that ran Windows 8.1 and the charms bar was quite convenient. Of course, it was a touch screen so it was easy to get to the charms bar as well.

Up to this point I never used the Charms bar but we just recently got a Windows 8 tablet and the Charms bar was useful in that mode, but not of a desktop, in my opinion.

IMO, this is where MS needs to be careful

It's not on the scale of making a touch screen interface for all with 8/8.1, but they seem to be doing the same again although in the reverse, making a desktop UI for all users, including touch with win 10

What we need is a choice of how our desktop works. I don't like the charms bar and others do.

It comes down to the fact that neither side of this particular poll should dictate to the other side how they should do things. Although I think the thing's pretty redundant (I still haven't found anything I can't get to quicker than with it), I don't do the touchy feely thing.

So, yep, Microsoft needs to be careful, but I fear someone in "development" has come to the same conclusion I have. Whoops!

And yes, I've stepped back and taken a closer look. Things do have more than one side, after all.

I've always taken the stance that choices are what we all need.

  6. Agreed.

    Agreed.

MS needs to accept the reality that "one GUI to rule them all" doesn't work.

Why? Just because it hasn't worked doesn't mean it's impossible for it to ever work. Without trying new things one can never figure out what actually does work and what doesn't. We'd all still be using DOS if MS had decided that they never wanted to try anything new.

We'd all still be using DOS if MS had decided that they never wanted to try anything new. Expecting one GUI to work equally well on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops is like expecting one vehicle to work equally well as mass transit, have the ability to haul 20 tons of cargo, and serve as a fuel efficient daily driver/grocery hauler.

I still feel the only way for M$ to meet their goal is to have a lightweight base OS that one can add feature and GUI modules to, based on need and desire.

  10. I voted no, because the Windows 10 way of replacing it seems fine by me.

What DOES NOT seem fine to me is that ugly hamburger button (even sounds disgusting) where the Charms are now at. It's silly to see the ... App commands and then all the Charms. It's redundant.

What should be there is the ... for the Charms. Right click for those app commands or swipe down briefly on the top of the open window.

Just, gross, hamburger button. Ugh. What's next? Hotdog switch? Ew.

I think I may have said in another thread, Charms is merely disabled and tablet mode will mostly likey bring it back - I think they are rewiting it as it was deeply integrated into the shell with Win8 ( see discussion here)

I haven't have a chance to look for it in Win10 yet - so not sure if it can be enabled on current builds.

Sometimes I found it useful, so the option would be lovely. *Smile

    Hi there

Even on a Touch laptop Charms are of limited use if you are primarily working in Desktop mode.

Baring in mind that with the inevitable death of RT who is really going to be running Windows on any TOUCH ONLY type of device - apart from the phone so it doesn't really make sense.

Concentrate on making the Touch parts of the OS that Integrate with Desktop functionality and then you've got a winner

I have a Surface PRO SP3 and the only times I use it in purely "Tablet mode" is in Watching movies / streaming TV or giving presentations (power point demo for example).

The rest of the time it's in DESKTOP mode with a docking station and nice large external monitor.

I LIKE SOME touch functionality but for Windows it shouldn't be overdone.

What WINDOWS devices these days are PURELY TOUCH ONLY. The smaller slabs are usually all ANDROID and sales of those are levelling off quickly. RT is also DEAD. The small screen of a phone wouldn't be useful for charms either.

Lets forget charms --it was part of the disastrous W8 experiment which shold be put to bed. W8.1 was better but IMO W10 is the real NEW Windows.

    Cheers
    jimbo.

  14. There are plenty of devices running windows that are touch only

sales might be low compared to Android and iOS, but they are around

I doubt the Surface line up of devices will do that well due to the price of them

If MS don't want to cater for touch only devices (except the Surface) then they need to say so, from what I gather they want Windows to work on ALL devices from phone size upwards (and this includes touch only devices running full windows) and forcing a desktop UI on these devices will, IMO, kill them off
