I think its more convenient to do it through Windows update. But, it was also okay to do it through the Windows Store for 8 users. It really doesn't matter to me. I have the requirements. At least that's what my specs say when I did the DxDiag test.

Are you saying that we have to have certain updates to install W 10? Do we need to get on a list?

Recently I had a problem with windows update on my W 7 desktop, it erased the contents of folders in MS Office and Libre which was testing for myself. I could not even do a system restore finally I reformatted.

Before I set it up I stopped windows update because there were over 200 updates to do and it interfered with the set up. When I had it set up, I installed MS Office from a CD I bought. I forgot the updates and during the install MS over road my "never" settings and installed only what was needed. I googled about it and on the MS site I was told they do this if you are installing something that needs the update. I thought "Good". Then I installed MS Essentials to get my email program and MS installed what the software needed. Couldn't/wouldn't it install what was need to upgrade to 10.

  3. Someone either on here, or on the 8 forums said that they had heard we would have to go through some updates to be ready for Windows 10.

I'll leave my Win 7 systems alone. Win 10 has not moved me in a good way and Win 8 made me barf. When the test version of 10 times out I'll load yet another Linux distro.

Microcenter has a 7" Winbook with 8.1 for $60 USD - might buy that to upgrade to Win 10 as I need a little entertainment traveller on the bus commute to/from work. So far that's about all I could use Win 10 for.

    Regards,

Here is an issue I see happening with windows 10 upgrade using windows update. You get it all installed. Everything is running fine, then the following year your hard drive crashes or your windows 10 operating quits working. Now you can't use an iso or dvd or flash drive to reinstall windows 10. If you put your old system back on, you won't be able to get the free upgrade anymore because it been more than a year. Now you half to go back to your old system or buy a windows 10 dvd.

That's when you use phone activation.

I'd be willing to just buy Windows 10 outright, if MS releases it as a OEM System Builder's disk, as they've done since Vista. I've never liked upgrades, as it seems that people have a lot of problems with them.

That is definitely true. Upgrades have been a pain.

  10. Well, if that's the case then Microsoft needs to do some more thinking on this. If a user has issues with their computer, and they cant get 10 back due to the year being up, then they should let users who have signed up for 10 do the 10 upgrade on their systems again. But, this could be the plan already. If you go to Microsoft, you can sign up for Windows 10 announcements, news, and other information.

I will be dual booting just to keep in practice with W10 for my customers. I am waiting for the newest build to be released. That last build was good but I will be a W7 user for years to come. I don't see much talk about buying new computers with W10. For those who are not aware, the bios will be replaced with UEFI. I've studied it but others will have another new learning curve ahead of them along with the W10 operating system.

  12. UEFI is already out there, new PC's shipping with Windows 8/8.1 have it in most cases. My two laptops have it.

Spot on. I'd prefer a less annoying method (typing in all the numbers) but phone activation always works.

  14. I've done the phone activation a couple of times. Fully automated voice recognition, didn't have to talk to a real person. I read my numbers in and the voice called out the new code to type in. A little time consuming but no big deal.

  15. I'll use 10, I wont bother with my Windows 7 machines, well my desktop is getting on a bit as it came originally with Vista before I installed the Retail copy of 7, I got that when they did the promotion deal at launch.

It will be nice if they did the same again with 10 but if not I'll upgrade this Asus Notebook which came with 8 and is upgraded to 8.1.

I'll do my phone as well, that runs 8.1 Denim, but as I'm due an upgrade on that in a few months it will probably be easier to do it with the new phone.
I'm using 10 at the moment but via a VM and like it so don't see any problems going over to it full time when it's released.
