  2. I use modern about 40% of the time, mainly the Bing/MS apps and the xbox music/video.
Desktop is mainly for the Office programs
IE I use in either, depending on where I happen to be at the time

From what I was reading on another site (might have been on WP Central) there has been mention that the option to select Start Screen or Start Menu is only there for testing during the beta period, once it is release this option might go and MS will decide which option best suits your machine

Depends on how you plan to upgrade.
    Update your existing OS?
Buy a new machine with Win 9 pre-installed?

My gameplan is to get a dvd installer and install it on a spare SSD on my current machine. I do hope there will be a release promo like the $40 win 8 pro before.

Thanks, Paul. :thumb: I was guessing you were about that percentage and that should be anyone's choice. Use how much of it one wants or not at all.

Hopefully MS won't make that mistake. I'm thinking it'll be a choice. Of course that depends on the device. If it doesn't support the desktop, then no choice.

I'm in 100% support of those that want choice, although I think eventually MS would like to port all things in the CP over to the Modern. That's about the only thing left so far as the system. File Explorer has Modern alternative via OneDrive app. IE with Modern/immersive. Office programs/suite is heavily rumored to be released in Modern. OneNote has Modern app. I'm expecting WMP and WMC to be ported over via Store app.

Question is will they keep both?

Do you think the day could possibly come, when MS designs their OS's to only run modern apps purchased through the store and no software from other vendors?

It's possible. But that day will also be known as MS' "doomsday".

Open doors to development for free and payed software made PC, MS and windows what they are now. Even alternatives like Linux owe their existence to that system. Closing those doors would be it's undoing. I don't think MS would do anything to let that happen. They might try to take bigger piece of it though, thru the Windows store. Some attempts to charging for licensing for Apps is to be expected when/if it gains wide acceptance. While it may be walking a thin line, I wouldn't discount that possibility. People are already being groomed for it thru smart phone and tablet SW marketing.

  9. This is something I would like to see

Would love to see these have a lot more features added (WMP/Zune), a good modern media manager/player would be very welcome

I don't understand MS though with their media apps, they seem to keep releasing new versions, with less features than the previous one

  10. I will just want to upgrade my Windows 8.1, not clean install

Download from the app store or get the dvd's, don't mind either way

upto £40 then will have it
£40 to £100 need to see what the new features are like
over £100 probably stick with win 8.1 till I need a new pc

I used to think that way, but now see how important legacy desktop programs are to some at this time. Perhaps if or when a lot of 3rd party programs get ported over the desktop will disappear. It's a matter of need and popularity. Enterprise will be the determining factor.

Of course, legacy desktop programs are important for windows, other types of programs including newcomers Apps are more than 1% of all programs for this OS. If the way Apps are set now doesn't radically change, there's no chance they would ever replace "normal" desktop programs.

I agree with you and hopefully MS does as well. But they do have a monopoly share of the OS market and there is always the arrogance factor like in, "It's my way or the highway."

Personally about the only apps I use are weather, maps and finance. Other than that the rest are third party software programs run from the desktop. This is the reason I posed the question, because it would make a big difference on whether I continue to stay with Windows. Thanks for your reply!
