Windows 10: Visual impairment customisations - retained on 8.1 to 10 upgrade?

A friend is visually impaired so she & I have done a fair bit of work to set up Win 8.1 for her with various elements enlarged, including browser windows etc. so she can see what she's doing.

As and when the PC is upgraded to Win 10, and she wants to go to 10 as she really doesn't like 8.1, will these localisations be preserved?

If so, will it be all of them or just some?

"Display" tab and other font customizations are no longer available after upgrade to Creators Update (Version 1703)

The removal of the settings option for changing menu items font size/bold has done a great disservice to those of us who are visually impaired.

The Creators v1703 update removed what settings visually impaired users had already made in previous Win10 UPDATE versions that had the option to customize the fonts of menus and title bar and other aspects.

Visually impaired users are at a great disadvantage in using Win 10 v 1703. Microsoft should/needs to restore the settings capabilities that were present before the Creators v1703 update.

You turned on Narrator. This feature is for the visually impaired. Turn it off by holding the volume up button, and while holding it, press Start.

There's another option in Settings>speech that can control reading texts out loud for non-visually impaired people.

 

Honestly: I don't know.

What I do know however is that the visual appearance of the systems I have upgraded (three different PCs) stayed the same. Generally the upgrade keeps many settings. As far as I know the settings for visual impaired users have not much (not at all?) changed. So if I should guess, I would expect that more or less all of them are just preserved.

 

If you have Windows 10 look in settings/ease of access. There is a magnifier in there and probably other items that will help your friend.

Hi, sorry I am unable to answer but I do want to make a point that may be relevant.

Although many people will have successfully upgraded from to Win10 without any hitches, there is a significant number who have had major problems. Some them have required a clean install (after an upgrade activation) to get the system operating correctly. Others have had their data and settings corrupted and lost. It's just there are so many different combinations of hardware and software out there that some upgrades will work better than others.

Maybe you mother might want to consider holding off a few months until some of the upgrade issues have been resolved? If the upgrade were to be unsuccessful it may cause unnecessary stress.

 

I believe that most of the millions of upgrades in fact went smoothly; what we see only is the small percentage, which somehow failed.

Before you do the upgrade, make sure that you have a backup of the system drive! Although Windows 10 does offer a way to go back to Windows 8.1, should your friend want to, and although this has worked for many users, I have already seen a report where this process failed. With a working backup of the Windows 8.1 system, you will be on the safe side!

 

Oh yeah. I agree. If say only 1% of upgrades go bad, then that's probably still below a million devices where it's all gone pear-shaped. I'd hate to be one of the unlucky ones if I was reliant on a pc, for my quality of life.

I've no intention of upgrading anyone's system to W10 until I've done one of my own (both W7 Pro), and that'll be a month or two yet.
I'll make sure there's a system image of the system beforehand.
As for the lady in question (not my mother *Smile ), we'll check out the various ease of access settings post-upgrade.
