Windows 10: Visual Studio UWP App Packages Folder is built incorrectly.

Hello

I have asked this question before in both the Windows and Visual Studio forums with out much success.

The problem is still there and I am beginning to suspect Windows Pro (Two PCs now Fail) as the culprit.

I thought I would try again with the notion that a picture speaks a thousand words!

When Create a new VS2017 UWP Application it creates a folder structure in a path similar to this:

C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Packages\0e17efbd-1cd1-431e-8970-bb3d01b9af80_h37gyvpph0nvj

On a Working PC it is a normal Folder structure.

On Failing PC the folder structure looks like a list of Shortcuts (although icon slightly different) with one OK folder (SystemAppData)

If I create a text file either manually or via the App in one of the "shortcut" folders it picks up a yellow padlock icon and the file is unmanageable , it certainly doesn't Roam as it should do.

Attached is a picture that shows exactly what the problem looks like.

New Visual Studio Project UWP

I have Windows 10 Pro and Visual Studio Enerprise 2015.

In Visual Studio, I am having problems creating c# UWP projects.

When Solution Explorer loads all Design views are inoperable and have the following message:

Visual Studio requires a newer version of Windows to display this content.

Please update to Windows 10 (10.0.10586.0) or later.

Windows 10 Pro should satisfy that.

Any suggestions?

UWP Tile Generator Extension for Visual Studio

Windows 10 comes on a variety of form factors, which means so do your Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. It’s important to make sure that your app looks great on whatever device the users are tapping, typing, or clicking on—even when it’s not open.

One of the core experiences on Windows are the tiles and icons that users see on the Start Menu and Taskbar. Providing the various tile sizes will ensure that user gets the crispest looking tiles and icons which, when pinned, look right at home next to the built-in applications.

As a developer, creating the required tiles with the correct sizes whilst adhering to the guidelines (link to guidelines here) can be time consuming. To save time, you can now use a Visual Studio Extension in the Gallery which takes care of all this hard work for you. With a simple right click on the image, you are able to generate all the various tile sizes and have the package.appxmanifest update, too.

Step-by-step:

Add image to project.

Right click on a SVG or PNG and select “Generate UWP Tiles.”

That’s it.

To get the best results:

There are a few things you can do to ensure you get the best possible results:

Start with a great source so the results are every bit as good.

Use SVG files, which are preferred as they scale well, but know that the tool also supports PNG files, too. If you are using a PNG, it’s wise to make sure that it is high resolution or you may get pixelated images.

Ensure that your logo sits in a square canvas with very little padding. This will make sure the tool can provide tiles that adhere to the Tile guidelines.

For a transparent background to your tile, ensure that it has a 1-pixel transparent border, as the tool determines the background of the tile based on the pixel at (0,0).

That’s all there is to it. With this tool in hand, you can make quick work of your tiles and icons and move on to bigger, more exciting things.

Kickstart UWP app creation with Windows App Studio’s open source UWP..

Windows App Studio is all about making it as easy as possible to build apps for Windows. The online tool helps you build apps with no coding required, so you can either start your project there and extend it in Visual Studio, or you can create and build the app completely in the tool. Today, we want to talk about another way we’re helping to make it easier to develop for Windows 10: Our Windows App Studio UWP Samples app, which is powered by our open source UWP Controls and Data Sources libraries. Open source libraries are incredibly useful in software development, but one of the tougher things for developers is to find good documentation and examples of code in those libraries without firing up an IDE. The UWP Samples app aims to solve this problem and showcase the contents of the libraries beautifully and in an interactive way.

A bit of background. As we build out and add new features to Windows App Studio, we need to create controls and data sources that are standardized in a way that makes them work for the tool. This standardization of the controls also makes it easy to package them in a library, so that’s exactly what we did. There are two main libraries:

Windows App Studio UWP Controls

Windows App Studio Data Sources

Each of these are open source with the MIT license and are available as NuGet packages and these are the libraries that power the UWP Samples app. You are free to use anything in these libraries for any project and you don’t even need to assign attribution/credit. Since they’re open source, you are enthusiastically invited to contribute new controls, data sources, and whatever else you think is great.

Windows App Studio UWP Samples app

The Windows App Studio UWP Samples app is now available in the Windows Store. What is unique about the app is that it lets you browse through all of the controls and data sources included in the libraries, without needing to write one line of code. You can even adjust the attributes of the controls to mimic how they would look in your app before opening Visual Studio. Furthermore, the app has the code and descriptions for each of the controls and data sources in the libraries, so you can even copy and paste directly from there.

Windows App Studio UWP Controls

As hinted before, this library is used in the Windows 10 apps generated with Windows App Studio. The library implements common patterns used in UWP apps, and provides some user interface controls that help you create responsive apps that adapt to different form factors. Examples of the controls are Variable Sized Grid, Pivorama, Carousel, Animation effect, and more.

Windows App Studio Data Providers

Within the Data Providers library is the code that enables apps generated by Windows App Studio to access data from different providers. The library includes code to make easy integrations with the data sources used in the tool, such as WordPress and YouTube. Since the library is open source, feel free to contribute back with a pull request and submit your own coded integrations to services. Please note that some data sources will need you to sign up for keys in order for the APIs to work properly.

We hope these libraries and UWP Samples app will make it as easy as possible to develop for the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).
