Windows 10: VMWare WKS 15.5 - much improved performance so DO update

Hi folks
running VMWare wks 15.5 on Linux Host on HP envy laptop with W10 latest skip ahead build as the VM:

Laptop i5 CPU 2 core 8GB mem

W10 VM -- 4GB Ram 2 core processor running Photoshop and office

Mem and CPU usage on host -- good for the activity on the VM






quite happy with that - average around 30% CPU usage on host when doing Photoshop (quite large memory needed when using Camera RAW files and layers etc ) as well as running an EXCEL web query in real time and using outlook 2019 all concurrently.

It's the top process -- vmware-vmx, the rest are host activities.

So VMWare - congrats on this one -- on my main desktop machine the VM absolutely flies -- however I've only got the laptop this weekend.

VMWare WKS 15 definitely worthwhile upgrade


Hi folks

The VMWare WKS release 15 definitely a worthwhile upgrade -- better snapshot managing, memory etc --I/O seems to have been really better optimised too.

Haven't tested all the features but I'm impressed so far -- also annoying defect of having to run in admin mode when using complete RAW (Guest OS native file system) Disks has been fixed too.

Networking also vastly improved with decent file transfer speeds and SAMBA working properly )(couldn't get SAMBA 4.7 to display Windows shares (Guest Linux accessing Host Windows -- always works the other way round though).









Note this is NOT a HYPER-V vs VMWare thread - some tools are better for each type of application --simply pointing out to any VMWare users that the update seems IMO worthwhile.

I use both in any case.

understandable as WKS 14 is also a decent release

VMware don't IMO exploit customers by having mega new releases every 5 mins !! so if you're happy with WKS 14 - fine. WKD 15 isn't a mandatory update etc but as I'm still getting it through work there's no reason why I would refuse a "Free" license.

Suffice to say that it does work fine.

Another idea for you @Danielx64

why not write to vmware and say you bought the release 14 just before the 15 version came out -- could they upgrade your product for free.

You never know - believe it or not some companies are OK with this when pushing out new releases just after people have bought the last one -- publicity is great and it only costs them peanuts.

Worth an attempt in my view -- what's the worst that could happen they say no so what have you lost !!!

I'm sure way back in my distant ancestry I must have some asian influence -- I always like bargaining - and often get away with it too !!!!!

VMWARE WKS rel 15 really efficient

On a desktop running W10 (Hundur in diagram) I'm running easily concurrently 2 Linux Virtual servers marked SAMBA server … - one serving Music, the other videos, TV, Movies etc, one XP VM, and 2 W10 X-64 VM's.







response time is fine on all of them

VMWare seems to have got its act together with WKS rel 15.

The Host machine is just a bog standard W10 X-64 pro Host with 2 SSD's in it for the VM's, some Native RAW HDD's for the LINUX VM's to serve the multi-media, 16GB RAM and a modest i3 CPU.

Previous VMWare releases would have struggled on this machine with that lot running concurrently.
