Windows 10: VSS Shadow Failures during Backing Up Solved

Hi Gang,

For what it's with I just did a Dell 3477 Win10Pro64 Fresh install and after installing the backup software (Veritas 18 sp3) I got the dreaded "not enough space to create Shadow error". After some research I discovered that at least 330MB or thereabouts of free space is required on the Recovery partition to do a valid Shadow copy on a 64bit box. I think it's quite a bit less on 32bit boxes.

In MS's infinite incompetence that costs TRILLION in lost productivity worldwide, they are only creating a Recovery partition is 529mb with well over 340mb being used to house the WinPE boot leaving less than 200mb of free space.

So I figured I'd test it since I've seen nothing addressing the small Recovery partition which is what's causing all the issues and allowed the Win10 install do it's thing during advance custom install after wiping the drive to 100% unallocated and let the install finish complete to login screen. I then rebooted again and ran advanced custom install again, this time deleting all the partitions with exception to the Recovery part and then "Expanded" it to 1gb.

*** Mind you, you can do this ONLY ONCE and it warns you of that to be certain because you can't change it afterwards. It's LOCKED IN and no further resizing is allowed.

Now I have a 1gb Recovery partition with the boot files intact and the remainder is unallocated.

So I created another partition using the rest of the unallocated space and let Install do it's install thing again to completion. It created another 529mb Recovery partition and the other needed partitions required on newer system enhanced BIOS's.

I then got into Disk Management after installation/rebooting and DELETED the newly created 2nd smaller 529mb Recovery partition and rebooted and Urethra! It booted and ran fine and has been running fine for weeks now!

So now there is a 529mb MS retarded worthless partition and NO MORE VSS errors during backup!

So it cost half a GB to fix the MS buffoonish blunder and no more issues. Worked great for me...

VSS (Shadow Copy)

We are using Windows 10 1703 with shadow copy enabled. For some reason on my own PC I am able to right click on a folder and see "Previous Versions" however for everyone else the list is empty. I can see the Volume Shadow Copy service does start up and run
however still do not see any folders in previous versions. Has anyone come across this before? We are not blocking or hiding the list.

On other computers there are no errors but the previous versions list is still empty on those.

 

VSS error: Shadow copy optimization writer failed

I use Carbonite's mirror image service to make a background shadow of my computer. I learned yesterday that the mirror image writer is not working because of a Windows service VSS error (I don't know what this is-just relaying what Carbonite told me). The
Carbonite technician told me I have a shadow copy optimization writer failure. However, my files are still being backed up.

Is it necessary to use a mirror image service? Should I worry about the VSS error and try to get it fixed?

Everything else with my computer is working fine as far as I can tell.

I have limited computer knowledge and hope I have explained this correctly!
