Windows 10 Failure

Here's the ISO used which should hopefully answer your question:

en_windows_10_multi-edition_version_1709_updated_sept_2017_x64_dvd_100090817.iso

It was a guest running under VMware Workstation version 14, which has been running 2 version of Linux (CentOS 6 and Debian 16). Host is running CentOS 6.

I have run sfc /scannow and DISM with various switches to no avail.

Where can i find this thread? I'm running Windows 7 as a guest on CentOS and would like to upgrade to win 10

 

Hi there

For Centos 7 / 7.1 (I haven't used Centos 6 / 6.5 for ages - so if you have that release you'll have to google further !!).

If you have the latest kernel - download the kernel headers, gcc, kernel-devel, dkms and ensure you have EPEL rel 7 added to your repos.

Then simply download latest VMware workstation / VMware player bundle from VMware site (if you are using VMware) and as root run the bundle.

It should compile fine, Then start VMware as a user and point to your VM config file.

From INSIDE the vm simply upgrade to W10 via Windows update -- you'll need your W7 key to activate the new W10 system..

I'm using latest Centos 7.0 / 7.1 works brilliantly.

Same procedure I'd imagine for VBOX users.

Incidentally -- if you are using CENTOS with a GUI (GNOME, KDE etc) add the nux dextop to your epel list and install YUMEX -- this is a gui front end for Yum and when downloading say an rpm file it will install automatically (prompt for root password).

Don't forget also to add ntfs-3g if you want to read and write NTFS files.

CENTOS 7 -- to add EPEL repo : sudo yum install epel-release

to add nux dextop (contains Multi-media - VLC etc plus other goodies like YUMEX. Run as root or SUDO.
(If you have KDE desktop you can run a load of stuff from within the "File explorer" - Dolphin on KDE -- as a non root user type from a console KDESU DOLPHIN, enter root password and you've got the file explorer with root privileges).

You might want to uninstall VMware tools in the guest, upgrade and then re-install them.

Upgrading the guest to Windows 10 version 1511 might prevent VMware Tools related features from working (2139517)

Thanks for that tip -- Until I did that I couldn't get any SOUND working in the Guest - not that for me is sound particularly important on the Guest - it works fine on the Host. However I do like to have a 100% working machine whether it's a VM or a physical machine.

Uninstall VMWARE tools on the guest and re-installed worked just fine (although until the vmware video adapter was re-installed - a 640 X 480 display on a huge monitor looked a bit odd !!!!) --- Depending on your video you might find it easier to uninstall vmware tools on the NEW guest rather than from the old OS (W7) first . Do whatever works best.
