  1. W10: even more issues with setting App for file type.

On a fresh blank installation of W10 we installed the trusty Irfanview for the handling of images in explorer. However, numerous file types stay assigned to Microsoft Photos. One of these are Nikon raw file *.nef, but also Leica *.lwr.

While using right click and "Open With" the box for "Do it always in the future" is not being offered. We went to settings, and set Irfan as the default App for images. Still no help. When we "Open" a NEF file, this time an error popup is being shown:

    "Invalid value for registry"

But: we can open the file using "Open with" at the least. I attempted to set this up in Settings using "Chose default Apps by file type". This widget is badly written, that not even Page-up/Page-down keys work on it. No sort or selection by 1st letter works either. Scrollbar is almost invisible, fading into window border and background. But I finally managed to find the *.nef. Yesterday assigned app was Photos. Today its TWINUI, whatever that might be. When we click on it and select "Irfanview" to become the default app, the setting window crashes(!!!) today. Yesterday though it was simply not showing Irfanview at all as a possibility. But when we went to Microsoft Store and spotted Irfan, we attempted to "download it" only to see an erratic message "An error has occurred, try some other time." End of the road.

I wonder if someone could help, maybe we can edit registry manually, delete the file type and reinstall Irfan?

It is mind boggling, why Microsoft would break such fundamental functionality, stable and proven over decades. Don't they test at all ????

So far W10 proven to be a horrifying experience and a great waste of time.

    :)

  4. W10: even more issues with setting App for file type.

app default setting by file type

    Hi Richard,

We understand that you're having issues with the default file app association on your computer. To assist you with your concern, you may refer to the steps below on how to change the default setting of your application:

    • In Search Windows textbox, search for choose a default app for each type of file and set .PDF and any other file extensions to point to your choice for default
programs. Do not use Adobe Reader to set the association.
    • Navigate to %systemroot%\system32 and locate the OEMDefaultAssociations.xml file. Make a backup of it just in case.
    • Open the OEMDefaultAssociations.xml file and keep it open using
      Notepad.exe.
    • Open PowerShell or CMD and run it as Administrator.
    • Enter the following: Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\AppAssoc.xml
    • Open C:\AppAssoc.xml with Notepad.exe
    • Copy the entire contents of AppAssoc.xml and replace the entire content of OEMDefaultAssociations.xml.
    • Save OEMDefaultAssociations.xml.
    • Delete C:\AppAssoc.xml (optional).

After doing the steps, you may now change the default file app association for opening .pdf.

Do update us with the outcome and if you need further assistance.

    Regards.
