W10 Search Broken - These results may be incomplete

    Hi.

I recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection.

The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc.

When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".

I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.

I really need this working! Help!

    I have 10586.

    :)

  3. These results may be incomplete...

If you follow Sangeeta's instructions and post in the Enterprise support.

Could you bring any answers back here?

On every similar issue I found the Microsoft Support stopped helping after telling people to rebuild the index and run the troubleshooter, this never fixes the problem.

Maybe the Enterprise support personal are trained better and have a real answer.

W10 Search Broken - These results may be incomplete

Hi, you may find search in Win 10 slightly confusing. I've seen people with search broken because of permissions issues, and also had to solve a problem where two dll's went missing for no clearly accountable reason that are needed for search.

    Note that
    a. Cortana search (My Stuff) from the search box in the task bar (by default) only finds what's indexed.
    b. Explorer search - people sometimes don't configure explorer to point where they think it's pointing when they start searching. But search there is indexed + a non-indexed search as you might expect.
    c. Search in Settings depends on sthg in Users being indexed to be responsive, else it's slow (= non-indexed search).

So I would suggest that you start with:
    a. Open Settings, try a search. Is it pretty quick?
    b. Test explorer search.
Add a folder to the indexed locations (Control panel, Indexing Options) - access the control panel e.g. by Win key + X, Control Panel- that contains a number of files and folders.
Monitor the number of items indexed, if your CPU use is low enough, indexing should proceed.
See if you can find the items in that folder via indexed search.

This may be of interest: permissions issues can stop search working properly.
This is for windows 7, but it applies to windows 10 too:
It might be because of the security settings for that folder. For a folder and its content to be indexed, it must be configured with the System permission. Most folders already have this, but there are some cases where a folder might be missing theSystem permission.
To add the System permission to a folder

    • Right-click the folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
    • If you don't see System listed under Group or user names, click Edit.
    • Click Add, type System in the box that appears, and then click Check Names.
    • Under Matching names, click System, and then click OK until all of the open dialog boxes you've opened are closed.

You'll need to rebuild the index once you've made this change.

Hopefully exploring the permissions may help.

You may find these commands of help:
Disable and re-enable the feature through dism. (From an elevated command prompt)
    dism /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:"SearchEngine-Client-Package"
    dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:"SearchEngine-Client-Package"

I too am experiencing this issue.

Local users work fine but domain users always see "These results may be incomplete..."

Have you been able to find solution?

No one found a solution? I see old uninstalled programs showing up in windows search and it always says "these results may be incomplete" -- I am talking about Cortana search not file explorer search. I've tried all of the 'fixes' listed here but none seem to work for me.

Found out that my issue may not have been related directly to domain membership.

So long as my primary language is English (US), the search works fine. I usually have my primary language as English (Australian). Changing the primary language to English (US) and making English (Australian) the second language consistently fixed my issues.

W10 Search Broken - These results may be incomplete

Well I thought I'd found a work around by making "English (US)" the primary language. However, I just spun up a new Windows 10 VM to test out some other issues and found that no matter what I did (including what worked on my primary computer), I couldn't get search to work for domain users. Local VM users had no problem with search, but domain users always had an issue with incomplete search results.

Not a burning issue in that case but I'm concerned that how I fixed the issue last time might not work if I need to rebuild my current work machine. Currently installing Windows Preview build on the VM to see if that fixes the issue.

Has anyone else found solutions or workarounds; or better yet any indication that Microsoft are aware of this defect and fixing it?

I had this issue and was able to find a resolution.

I could use the search with no issues with any local account, but my domain account would never work. I tried deleting the domain profile from a local account and then logged in again to create a new profile and it did not resolve the issue.

I noticed that there were event log error messages about the domain logon servers being unavailable. This didn't prevent me from logging in, but seemed to also be preventing some of my group policy from being applied.

When I clean formatted my machine to put Windows 10 on it, my old machine account was never deleted from the domain by IT. The IT guy was originally telling me he needed to delete the machine account before joining the new machine so it could re-create it. I told him in my experience that wasn't necessary, joining would just re-use the same account.

Well apparently I was wrong because the solution was to remove my machine from the domain, delete the machine account from the domain and then re-join it so a new machine account was re-created. I have no idea if this will solve your problem, but it definitely worked for me!

FYI, the event log error was in System event log and had this form:
This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain REDACTEDNAME due to the following:

There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.

This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

    ADDITIONAL INFO
If this computer is a domain controller for the specified domain, it sets up the secure session to the primary domain controller emulator in the specified domain. Otherwise, this computer sets up the secure session to any domain controller in the specified domain.
