Windows 10: W10 upgrade failure

Installed all drivers under W7
Ran upgrade checks - and all backups.

W10 upgraded proceeded, went to end reboot and presented Login screen
Then found mouse & keyboard not working (in fact no USB at all)

Found an old PS2 kyb that worked ... not easy finding your way around W10 having never used it.
Anyway in Device manager it shows that USB controllers each of them had a yellow triangle

The text says "Software for device blocked from starting, contact vendor for new driver"

If I then select update driver > search it advises "Windows detected driver is up to date"


So Windows thinks driver is wrong and doesn't load them ... yet also advises driver is the latest.

The mobo is ASUS P8Z77-V le
I have installed all latest W7 drivers

I have the W10 chipset drivers ready to install once upgraded - but there is no W10 USB driver, checked with ASUS on this and there is no W10 driver.

I have made sure Legacy support is enabled in BIOS

W7 to W10 product key rules after HDD failure

Hiya. For my living I go to peoples houses and fix their technology.

4 times in July I attended customers with HDD failures (after W7 to W10 upgrades) where the only way forward was full W10 clean install on new SSD.

In all 4 cases the customers original W7 product key failed W10 validation (aren't the upgraded one's remembered?). anyway ....

Forums I read said the only official recovery path was W7 clean install followed by W10 free upgrade.

My questions is, now the W10 free upgrade option has expired, what do I tell my customers with HDD failure after W7 to W10 free upgrade?

Could someone help me with a link to where the rules are clearly and simply explained please?

Windows 10 USB wireless adapter issues

I have a similar issue with wireless adapter. I just upgraded from W7 to W10 and if I try to connect to my NETGEAR WN111v2 wireless-N adapter, my screen starts flashing on & off. As long as I don't try to connect, my computer is fine...useless, but fine.
NETGEAR site shows no W10 driver for my product. I think I will revert back to W7 and chalk the W10 failure alongside all other WINDOWS failures.

 

Did all the pre-checks on my W7 ultimate install
Went ahead and did W10 upgrade it failed - (working on an USB issue) however when I rolled back from W10 the W7 quickly came back and all working ... but now fins original Product key has been wiped and a temporary key installed.

When I try to put in my original key (have a print out of all keys for PC) it fails with error code 0xC004E003

I have gone to computer > system > change product key but it will not accept my key

It points you to Microsoft pone line ... but tat just points you to an automated system that wants installation ID not product key

I have the original pre-licensed volume install disc - can I get it to 'reset/setup' new key without doing a reinstall.

 

This might be your problem right there.....if this is infact a volume licensed key and not a standard OEM/Retail key. Those volume licensed key play by a different set of rules, which I'm not familiar with.

It has installed an OEM 'new' key .... totally different key format.
I tried reading that link but does not seem relevant to my W7 issue.
I have the pre-licensed install disc can I rerun to reactivate without doing a reinstall.
Failing that I'm going to have to buy another copy of W7 .... so annoying

 

And the screen on the computer where it gives you the phone number to call shows you the installation ID to provide to Microsoft...

Two things will help us determine what is wrong:

1. Run showkey plus on this forum. Click on the product keys on the showkey window and they will blank out and you can post the results here:

After you get the results for the product keys on your computer (just by running the program), then in the upper right corner click check product key. Enter the product key you are trying to enter manually, and post that result too.

2. Open a "Run as administrator" command prompt and enter the following command:

slmgr /dlv

The results will not contain any unique identifying info, so you can just post the results here without blanking anything out.

 

This is not an OEM machine this is a selfbuilt .......... and the copy of windows installed and activated fine (also again OK on clean install) even worked to activate W10 yesterday ... only gone wrong on rollback

It is strange that the computer is self built and not a factory computer Did you clone the Windows 7 to put on the self built computer or use a hard drive from an old computer in it?

The problem is that the Windows 7 product key you have is OEM:SLP. What that means is that it is locked to work with only the recovery media that came with that computer from the factory. Is there a Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the computer anywhere with a Windows 7 product key printed on it?

If there is not a COA sticker with a Windows 7 product key on it then you will have to:
1. Restore the computer from the factory restore disks that came with the computer - or that were made from the software originally on the computer.

2. Purchase a Windows 7 or Windows 10 Product Key.

What is an SLP product key?

A System Locked Pre-installation key, or SLP key, is a product key that does NOT require activation, and is used by major OEMs (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) with Windows Pre-installation deployments, a special way to install Windows for cloning to PCs en masse.

How can I install an SLP key?

You cannot! SLP keys will NOT install on a standard installation of Windows using standard media (OEM, Retail, Upgrade, Technet/MSDN, etc. etc.) Additionally they may be locked to a particular OEM (ex. Dell.)

The only way you will get a copy of Windows installed using an SLP key is with the original installation media from the OEM, which is usually an imaged based “installation” with all the bloatware on it – maybe except in the case of Dell, which typically will ship Dell branded standard Windows installation media with the SLP key embedded. Point being, you’ll never need to know what an SLP key is, because you’ll never have to enter one during an installation – if you were to be prompted for a key during install, then the SLP key isn’t embedded, and guess what, it won’t work anyway.

 

Can you get into the UEFI (BIOS) with the USB mouse and keyboard? That would that the problem is entirely with Win 10.

If it's a Windows problem, one thing to try would be deleting the USB devices from Device Manager. Reboot, and pray.

 

This was a brand new computer - all parts new purchased in 2012
My company (at that time) provided me with what they said was a pre-licensed Volume Install disk for all versions of W7

I installed the OS from that disk ... it activated and been used, and one clean install since then.

I still have that disk, and if I can use it for a repair or re-license happy to do so - just don't want pain of a clean install.

It run as valid copy of W7 for all those years .. was validated as correct in W10 upgrade checks and even installed as valid when it upgraded to W10
Only became an issue when I rolled back.

 

You can try installing a temporary Windows 7 from that disk, and if it activates, then capture the genuineticket.xml file and use that to activate a Windows 10 install. Not sure if the genuineticket.xml file can be used to activate the old Windows 7, though.

Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

 

Because of the issues yesterday - want to get my W7 license sorted before I attempt upgrade again.

When I put the disc in I get the following window ...

I went a couple of steps in ... it says it will install one copy pre-activated of any W7 version
I have multiple HD .... could I install on a different HD without impacting current install .... just concerned about impact on BIOS

 

This is another bad sign if they are all in the system....meaning the MBR is on a previous HDD which could be part of the activation error you are getting.

 

Yes, you can install it on a different hard drive.
