That maybe true to a certain extant, but when I read comments on this Forum on how Microsoft's demise is imminent, because they are implementing radical changes that nobody wants, well, it just makes me roll my eyes. From what I've gleaned from your posts on the subject, you don't like Windows 8, nor will you ever. That is certainly your privilege, but it doesn't mean Microsoft is necessarily going to change course in it's future plans. Time will tell as more info comes out about Windows 9.

My disdain for Win 8 is not only with me. It has had less market penetration than Vista at the same point after release. I didn't say MS's demise is imminent, but I think their path shows little regard for user's wants, even if we don't know what we want.

Personally I think a cross platform type Windows OS is here to stay and those who favor a more traditional desktop setting, like W7, will have to stay with it until support ends. For me it isn't a big deal, as the addition of Classic Shell to W8 is very easy to do and it works well.

That's a big thing Jay, with 4-5 lines of code MS could have made it an install option for a traditional desktop which Apple and, I think, all Linux distros have seen fit to keep. I see know logic in having an OS for a PC that works on a phone.

I have tried Win 8 BTW, so I know the OS a bit.

I'd be fishing too, but winter is refusing to lave the area.

I don't totally disagree with you. I'm just stating my opinion of how I see Microsoft proceeding, whether we all like it, or not. Time will tell on whether they are "shooting themselves in the foot", or not. Until then, I will just adapt to the present circumstances.

Tell me about it! We have had the coldest winter here since 1996. At this rate the ice will still be on the lakes when fishing season opens the 2nd week in May. That happened last year as well. *Sad

As has been said, the worst day fishing is way better than the best day at work.

    Just some thoughts.
Companies look at cost, sales, income and market share.
What we know about Windows 8 is.
    1. We don't know the cost because Microsoft won't say.
    2. Sales are very poor by anybodies standard.
    3. Income of Windows 8 is unknown to us. All the sales they are having with Windows 8 products indicates they want more sales and market share than income with Windows 8 at this time.
    4. # 3 will only last for so long when the income from a product will come to the top of the list of things wanted and needed.
    5. Making products and services the market wants and at a fair market price improves sales, market share, and income.
    6. Trying to force the market into using products and services the market doesn't want has never worked for long.

Now this looks like, to me and millions, a welcome Win 8 update. Hopefully carried on to Win 9.

Yeah, I think so too Jack. Actually it will be an update to Win 8.1 from Windows Update later in the year.

  12. Not to throw cold water, but I don't see what distinguishes this UI from KDE or Gnome of over a decade ago. 2D with no transparency. Aero Glass was a pita to program but at least the result stood out.

I forget the last time I seriously used Linux. Maybe the early 2000s. The XWindow Managers looked a lot like this except for the labels being of things Windows.

I have spent the last two days fooling with Linux. About 16 hours and I'm not impressed. If it worked properly I think it has a chance.

Have to agree 100%. If Linux was going to replace Windows (any flavor) it would have already done so by now. People want something they don't have to overly think about. OS X and Windows are easy and designed for the common everyday user. . .they are just simple. . .*Biggrin

I certainly don't have the skills, but as I understand it Linux is open source and a wizard can make his own version adding bells and whistles.
