Not even that much in the main stream media today about it being released. Maybe tomorrow. I remember when a new Windows release was a media frenzy. Again, things are changing. Seems many are more into their phones and tablets these days and that is what MS is aiming for long term. I digress from the main topic, sorry. *Sad

Actually, the game still plays exactly the same as it has for the past year. The only things you get for going premium are:

It's not stopping you halfway through a game of Klondike and saying "To continue, please pay $9.99".

  5. LMAO. What a joke, W10 is the best everyone is saying. Charging for Solitare now? Hmm I've got an idea.

Powershell removed all crAPPS from the O/S, installed Win 7 games on Win 10 ... problem solved.

    Loving this O/S

Everyone talking about this free OS thing, seem to forget it is free only for a short period. Look at Window 8 and the discount they first offered, but how many are still using those versions. Really, the free offering is a marketing scam, just like paying for the solitaire app. LOL, I know a couple of people who won't upgrade now, just because they will have to pay for the app. Just seems Microsoft isn't very user perceptive.

I will just keep playing all of my free games on my Chrome browser, which includes multiple solitaire games.
<charging for it, huh? They must be desperate>

That's actually not that much at all, but some people don't want to spend money on removing ads.

I see "remove ads" on android games frequently..... yet there is a way to bypass it without actually paying anything.

  9. "...the free offering is a marketing scam..."

Yeah, I can totally see how offering the #1 OS in the world for free for a year is a marketing scam. "We'll reel them in with our previously highly priced OS, and then nail them with Solitaire!" That makes total sense.

"LOL, I know a couple of people who won't upgrade now, just because they will have to pay for the app."

I assume those people have never used smartphones, seeing as how that's basically the way that apps work on a free smartphone OS.

"Just seems Microsoft isn't very user perceptive."

Yep, not like they just invited anyone and everyone to beta test their OS and offer feedback or anything. A "user perceptive" company would never do that. /s

"I will just keep playing all of my free games on my Chrome browser, which includes multiple solitaire games."

And most of the websites offering those free games are what keeps my malware removal side business going, so thanks! *Smile

  10. Not trying to pick fights here but how is this now the #1 OS in the world? Explain please ...

Then why did they remove so many customization options of the operating system if they were supposed to listen to user feedback? Examples include, inability to change fonts & colors, start menu font sizes, apps embedded into the operating system without allowing complete removal (unless expect mode powershell command), forced updates (now needs a special uninstall tool, etc.

I don't care for solitaire but changing the most basic Win32 game into a "modern app" with option to purchase to remove an advert is complete nonsense. I do not care for the game but that is just ludicrous. At least give the complete option to remove the Windows Store and everything else, and no I don't want to just "leave it" on my computer.

Like I said, I'm not picking a fight with you, but I don't understand how this is now #1 O/S

#1 for lack of customization? then yup we have a winner W10.

If it wasn't for Shawn and countless others posting 100's of tutorials to change things (that are basic and should not need tutorials for) then what was the point of user feedback from Microsoft if they didn't listen to anyone? Great job "listening" they did there.

    Hi there

I HATE this creeping Monetisation--even things like Twitter are getting into the act.

However simply install the old W7 versions of these games --No adds and IMO a better experience too.

I LIKE spider Solitaire (especially during stupid work meetings !!!) --old version --NO ADS. You've also got Hearts, Solitaire etc.

Here's the EASY option (one suit) . Works perfectly still on W10.

    Cheers

  12. I was speaking in terms of usage. Windows tends to have around 75 to 80% of the worldwide OS marketshare. That would make it the #1 OS in the world.

As for your second point...honestly, I couldn't tell you why all that went down. I'm pretty bummed about the lack of customization too. I really, really wanted a global dark theme. I assume it's because the majority of the people who use Windows just go with the Out Of Box Experience, and not enough people of the million or so who tested the OS brought up customization as an issue.

With Solitaire...it kind of seems like MS is going all in with the "across all devices" thing. Both Android, which is the #2 OS in the world by usage stats, and iOS have microtransactions. Words With Friends is a very popular app which is free, but ad supported. A year or so ago, I paid .99 to turn off the ads because they annoyed me. I can't really be surprised that Microsoft would look at the mobile landscape and see opportunities for monetization, especially if they just took a year's worth of possible profits out of their own pocket.

I understand the annoyance at the advertising, but it's not in your face and it doesn't effect the game at all, aside from giving people who pay a bit of an advantage...in a single player game.

  13. Want to remove the ads from Solitaire in Windows 10? That'll be $1.49.

Ahh ... OK. Thanks for clarifying that up for me *Smile. I wasn't sure if you meant W10 in general or all of Windows.

Yes the lack of themes is really heartbreaking, especially since I notice a lot of users like the dark theme and Edwin goes into such lengths to customize his copy of W10 and share his tweaks and tricks with everyone. It's a shame about this whole "out of box" experience then because why of all the "user feedback" and then remove all the personalization options. That's a total bummer.

I see where you were going with the ads part. It is still quite an annoyance. I'm going to wait and let the dust settle a bit and powershell remove the apps built in. It's unfortunate that they cannot be removed manually, but must be forcefully removed. That is another gripe I have.

    Thanks for the post.

And @jimbo45, yes I knew that trick since the bring the 7 to 8 games ... was doable in 10. Which is much better then keeping moden apps.
    Ahh ...

  14. It really is. At least the registry key for dark mode still works for now, and I'm hopeful that there will be some pretty good third party customization tools. I just wish that Microsoft would realize that not everyone wants the same general UI experience and would implement full themes, instead of just wallpaper/taskbar color themes.

  15. When I first started getting the ads I thought they were some sort of virus as the quality was so poor. It was also just after I'd done a reinstall (or something) and I hadn't seen them previously. But I couldn't get rid of them and stopped playing the Daily Challenges because of this.

My partner plays Solitaire, MahJong and Sudoku Daily Challenges and has never seen any ads. I always get them (if I play). They are an irritation, but it is a choice to play these MS games, rather than other (non-Microsoft) versions or Jimbo's older versions (which I have also installed). And as they occur before a game starts you can always use the 30 seconds to do something else (go to the bathroom, make a coffee, pick your teeth, whatever)

The ads I have seen have only ever been for other MS games, and actually got me to try MS Jigsaw, which I really like, so they do work!

I don't like them, but I'll put up with them for a while at least.

And to the poster who said you couldn't play without being logged into Xbox - you can, just click on Cancel and the games still load as normal. You just don't get to compare scores and all those other competitive things I can live without *Wink
