Want to Upgrade a Pentium D 920 (Presler) to a Core Duo 2 Quad ?

I was just activating my new X99 machine for the 8 time just now *Smile , Intel delivered the 3rd new CPU on Friday , and I've had the 6th MB from Asus (since feb) for about a week, so It is finally all together and working , on the table....tomorrow I will put it back in it's Case and hope for the best.

Activation went fine thankfully , they now use your Smart phone if you have one , they send a text , you click on a link and up pops a new activation window/app like on the computer ,and you type in the numbers so way easier than listening and talking esp. if you have an accent . (The "how many computers" ? was the only one asked, in the Activation App, just hit 1 *Smile )

good deal on the USB3 card , Hopefully it has Win7 and Win 10 Drivers but if not Try the WinRaid Forums they have good USB3 drivers there.

And you didn't upgrade the Laptop to 10 why ? my old Netbook even took W10 Ok.

***forgot to Add that you can still get W10 free if you use assistive technologies at the moment too.

I didn't read all the replies but can say there's a difference in the CPUs even though the socket [775] is the same. The first CPU [in the computer] is only 32-bit and the desired replacement is 64-bit, the CPU has to match the motherboard even though a 64-bit computer can run 32-bit OS. I replied as I have researched a similar situation with a Gateway SFF that I would like to upgrade but don't want to replace the motherboard.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I partitioned the Laptop's Drive too, and have Windows 10 (Home). It works fantastic, but it isn't Pro, and to but Pro on it, it is just not worth it. I did but a set of new DDR2 Crucial sticks on it, being the original Ram was no brand, and believe it or not, it helped a bit. The CMOS lost time, but somehow that came back as well. I constantly had to update the time, but somehow all works well with that too. Can you believe, my Graphics card on here is a Radeaon Mobility with 125 MGs of RAM. LOL, still was able to install those old drivers forcefully, as both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 wouldn't accept them, but it works with a 1200 x 800 screen, LCD. Perfect for me! I hate to see this go, but unfortunately, it is just a matter of time when simple tasks won't run.. That's why I wish I could do the processor upgrade on here more so than the D, but I'm stuck with what I have.

Did NOT know there was an app for that. I have the iPhone 6S, so I'll look for it. I like Apple when it comes to the phones and iTunes, and the Apple TV 4, all great products, but a Mac, no way!

Wow, that is GREAT news, thanks! I guess I can come up with an accessibility issue... I read the link thanks!

By the way, I dual boot all my machines, new or old. Its the best of both worlds! Want to Upgrade a Pentium D 920 (Presler) to a Core Duo 2 Quad ? :)

It sounds like we both like our old machines as well as our new ones!

Want to Upgrade a Pentium D 920 (Presler) to a Core Duo 2 Quad ?

Kbird, such a sorry state of affairs, hard to believe such low performance on this processor! I bet the best processor I can put in here, the Extreme Pentium Edition, that really can boost performance, just with HT, even though no ST. Darn, I was so much looking forward to a Quad C2D... Oh well.

    Passmark 8 - 443.8

2D Graphics were okay, better with 3D graphics, close to a 750GTX and comparable to a GTX 550 Ti, so I did well with a 20 USD GT 730 - probably being it has GDDR5, others did not, even though it has only 1 GB of GDDR5, it rates better than most GT730's with 2 GBs of GDDR3. Heck, I'm gonna try a used CPU, the better Extreme Pentium. For 40 bucks USD, it's worth a shot!

It is hard to explain, but even though my benchmarks are so low, this is still quite snappy for those scores, so it must have a lot to do with that graphics card, even though it isn't technically boosting the CPU, but it is taking a lot of the work away from it...

Newegg had a great price on a Gigabyte Mobo for 40 USD, with support for 6 PCI's DDR4 Mem, 6 - 3.0 USBs, all the latest new support. That can bring down my original 500-600 even to maybe 450...

Oh only $40 ? then I would likely try it too *Smile if I didn't have a Q6600 on my Old Girl already.... I thought we were talking $200+ for an EE CPU. The Mhz is higher ,and it has Hyperthreading too , its 64bit so likely worth $40 , besides it's fun to play right *Smile.

watch your temps and use good TIM , I usually use RealTemp 370 for temps only but use HWInfo too if I want other Info like voltages too.

Microsoft has an Authenication App but I think the Activation App/Webpage? is only available when they text you a link ( harder to hack?)

My Brother picked up the 730 for his old build too when his 560Ti died and is happy.

don't go too cheap on the Mobo ...you want it to last another 10 yrs right ? and be upgradable....

That was what I thought, If I can at least eke out a bit better on the CPU for just 30-40 USD, it is worth a try, even if it didn't do well, I don't find that to be a huge loss. So I think I'll give it a try! Thanks for the advice on that!

Absolutely, I want a descent mobo with at least upgrade-able ram to 32 GB of DDR4. Mobos aren't all that expensive anymore, but I definitely will watch out for that, and yes, I want it future proof, at least 10 years! *chuckle

They have several flavors (if you want to call it that) of the GT 730, mine was made by MSI, I think that was the best for the price, and wow, I still can't believe it performs so well. Great buy for anyone.

And yes, the EE CPU does have Hyper threading, that alone will give some notable improvement I think.

And yes, I have heard where they send a code. I actually had that done when I clean installed the latest version, 1511, remember I was having issues with that old graphics card, which I think was the culprit from upgrading? So when I did a clean install, and put that new graphics card in, went like a breeze, and with my Microsoft account, they sent a code to my cell, and email to make sure it was me... That is very good!

Maybe this weekend, I'll have bought an EE by then and install it. I will definitely let you know how it goes. I need to by the paste too. I just stumbled upon an ACER (I am not reallly impressed with them) and it had a i7, a Nvidia GTX 960M, a 256 SSD, Windows 10 PRO (hard to believe), wireless AC, and some other goodies, no bloat ware for under $600, its a Laptop with 1080P display, 15 incher, 3.1 Type C, 3 3.0s, 2 2.0s, on USB, an HDMI out with a VGA Out (which is rare these days and I like using VGA on my smaller TV), so I might get it. It is on sale at Best Buy, not really into buying a PC from Best Buy, but heck, with those specs and that money, I cannot go wrong!

Thanks for all the other advice, heat - voltage, all great tips!

Sounds good *Smile , do some price matching on that Acer , it is likely End of line so others may have steep discounts too.

With the new Laptop and the EE CPU , it doesn't sound like you need a new Desktop too *Smile .... but why not *Smile

Want to Upgrade a Pentium D 920 (Presler) to a Core Duo 2 Quad ?

I've did the comparison chart, I think I posted it in here before, but wanted to know this... The present processor I have is at a FSB rate of 800 MHz. The mobo can support the EEs, right? So it says. The only two EEs I see are both at 1066MHz FSB, except the 840 EE which is at 800 MHz. My question: will I notice this difference of FSB speed? Over all, it really is worth getting the better of the two processors, the EE, being that is hyper threaded, but I am not sure if I can take advantage of a FSB at 1066MHz and also, DDR2 at 677 MHz, instead of its current mem od DDR2 at 533 MHz?

I have seen some mobos modified where a one like mine supports DDR3 @ 1600 MHz

I think in one of the link here you left it said the MB was capable of 800 or 1066 didn't it?

You need to get specs off Ram chips and do some googling on it and see what it can do at what voltage. Alot of DDR2 runs at 1/2 the FSB speed so 533 would be ok.

I'm posting this, all the way from 10 years ago, 2006, I just got a kick out of this!!!

Intel's Pentium Extreme Edition 965 processor - The Tech Report - Page 1

Yes, 533 MHz working out the specs should be good to go.
You know what is funny, after researching and doing all of this Googling, I now find it hard to find a used EE 965...
At best, I have seen ONE used going for near $50 USD. I have seen new boxed ones going anywhere from $250 to $500 USD...
I do see tons of D 920s, 930s, 940,s for 10 bucks used... anything higher, even Ds, are not as easy to find and are a LOT more - even used.
    Amazing!

Good think you are in no real hurry for it , it is likely when all these Refurb Companies ,get in another Container from a Large Organization, so it'll happen again soon .

looks ok for 1066 to me

Want to Upgrade a Pentium D 920 (Presler) to a Core Duo 2 Quad ?

Just getting discouraged, I really wanted an EE 965 but it looks impossible for now, I ONLY see one website that has 3 left, selling at $129 USD, that to me is too much to play around with, not that I don't have it, but being this is working okay now, it really isn't worth spending 20 bucks or so for a used EE 965... I see TONS of Pentium D 945, which is so odd, I ask why? Okay, benchmarking the 920 I have against what I have seen with a 945 - I see an overall 13-15% better performance, but no HT. So I get a clock speed higher at 3. 40 GHz rather than 2.80 - nothing else is better, whereas the EEs had hyper-threading, which I think would have been a noticeable improvement... CPU World still say a C2D will be supported, but I don't think so, being Intel didn't give out full info on these Gateway made Watsonville 2 mobos... Only that they support - so they say, P4s, PDs, and EE 955 and 965, all under the "Presler" code name.
Putting a Quad Core C2D in here, wow, I think I'd be really happy, but that isn't gonna work I guess... So all bets are off upgrading old Betsy here, unless you or anyone else thinks that 945 @ 3.40 GHz would be noticeable. There are so many of them, all are selling at just 5 USD, including shipping, lol. Something up with them...

The Board may support C2D but if they never updated the Bios as well with the Correct Microcodes then it won't unfortunately, so only way to find out is buy one and try .....and resell if not I guess.

as for the 945 , while it is 15% better will you notice that ITRW ? you can likely get that overclocking the 920 by 10% ? if the Watsonville MB allows OCing that is ?

Just be patient and keep your Eyes Open that EE 965 will turn up *Smile meantime enjoy the new Laptop......
