Can't you just unpin all the metro apps from start and then it would/should look like the old Start you seem to like?

I'm actually just the opposite from you. I like the new Start button and what it brings up, makes it nice to pick what I want to run very easily, be they 'modern' or 'desktop'. Now if they just get the 'modern' apps to look and behave properly I'll be happy.

Isn't this global conspiracy gone too far? Good to know at least you are well prepared and fight back Microsoft and all those international corporations and agencies with three or four letter acronyms around this globe of ours, interested in nothing else but forcing you to do use their systems so they could follow your every step and move. You really are so interesting, the corporations like Microsoft really so interested in forcing you to use all bells and whistles you would not like to use.

You did know that Microsoft together with KGB, MI5, MI6, NSA, FBI, Twitter, Google, Facebook and whatnot are also following your TV habits, not only browsing? Every time you press the remote button to change channel the information is sent to your PC and from there to Microsoft to be shared with all others. Not to mention all other things they are interested in, your laptop cam taking a pic every time it notices you have new clothes sending it further, as well as your microwave sends information every time you warm up your noodles.

The Windows Store Apps only have one purpose, to haunt you and tell everything to Microsoft.

Good to know someone does not accept this *Wink.

I like the new start menu as well.. I guess MS can't please some no matter what they do. *Wink

way to modify the Start Menu programs?

The first thing I do is add the Quick Launch Toolbar to my Task Bar. My reasoning is that I have my most used apps as well as any folders and/or files I might be frequently using.

I cannot pin folders or files to the Task Bar, but I can pin them to the Quick Launch Toolbar.

IOW, say I am writing a technical manual for Microsoft Office. I'm writing chapters on Word and Excel more than the rest of the apps. I can pin either these two chapters or the Office folder containing the chapters to Quick Launch. Once I'm through with a file or folder, I can easily delete its icon from QL.

The icons are small and take up much less space than pinned app icons (look at the IE icon vs the rest of the icons), but even with my eyes, I can see them quite well.

And the tutorial for adding Quick Launch is here: Quick Launch - Add to Taskbar in Windows 8

For me it's a win win situation.

Me too, I am a great fan of Quick Launch. I am also a fan of a vertical Taskbar which in my opinion makes both Taskbar, Quick Launch and Notification area more usable. This way I can set Quick Launch to use large icons, the Taskbar and Notification area small icons:

Yes you can, with one extra step but still fast and easy.

First right click an item, a file or folder and select Pin to Start. Here I pin my virtual machines folder Hyper-V:

Now open Start Menu, right click the item you added and select Pin to Taskbar:

You can now unpin it from Start if you want to.

  6. i'll chalk it up to being early in Win10's development, but those folders i've created randomly disappear & reappear. If they're there, and I shut down, next time I boot up, they won't be. Next reboot they'll show up. It's very consistent so far, alternating boots. I'm always doing complete shut downs.

way to modify the Start Menu programs?

Elsewhere in the forum, it was reported that StartIsBack has a beta version for Windows 10 TP. I tried it and it works!

    Hi there

Don't forget that Custom Toolbars still work so add your toolbar(s) to the quick launch bar. These are much more flexible and work the same way as they have since Windows 7.

    Cheers
