Windows 10: WD 8 second load cycle count

I know what you mean but I'm not noticing that. Just a little click after 8 seconds of idle disk activity. I can't hear any spinning up/down. I'm not the only one reporting this, there are endless threads/blogs etc on the internet. (appreciate your replies BTW, just seems there is no solution!)

 

Could be only heads parking without actual shutdown. As I said before, could be just some HP's function.

 

Seems to be, although WD describe it as a power saving feature but as I said before, my main concern was that SMART will report it as exceeded its design life in 6 to 12 months.

 

If that's the case, it should not impact it's longevity but it can be annoying.

 

Not sure I agree with that, if it is designed for 300000 cycles and SMART reports that being exceeded in 6 months. WD don't seem to want to comment on a public forum, if the warranty is void, if you exceed it's stated design specifications. Thanks again.

 

If the external drives are only used on occasion, like backups and such, just unplug them when not in use.

The power saving feature is in the drive itself.

When WD Green drives were first released you could disable the power saver using WDIDLE.
After a couple of years they changed the firmware and then the best you could do was set the time to 5 minutes.
I had both versions.

Someone on SevenForums suggested using KeepHDAlive and I've used that ever since (in combination with using WDIDLE to set the drive to 5 minutes).
