WD My passport - Not recognized in Win 10

I am having WD My passport Ultra (1tb) and its not recognized in any USB 3.0 ports, after initial one time!
If I try my HDD in any USB 2.0 ports its recognized instantly.

I tried reinstalling drivers from device manager, but same problem.

PS: In WIN 7 OS, it gets recognized in all USB 3.0 ports as well.

    Any solutions ?

    :)

Backup computer with MS WIn10 to WD Passport Essentail SE.

    Hi All,

I have been using this WD Passport SE with my Dell laptop with Win 7 for two years. Now I upgraded to WIN 10

and the drive is not recognized. But the drive is recognized by another computer with Win. XP with out any problem.

Have reloaded the driver for the WD Passport. Now the machine sees the drive in the Devices screen, but cant access the

    files. Any help is appreciated.

WD My passport - Not recognized in Win 10

I have the same drive with no issues. There is a WD SES Driver that should get installed when this device is hooked up from Windows 10, would be listed below Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager and only visible when hooked up unless you select under View in the Menu and check "Show Hidden Devices". Also shown as WD My Passport in Disk Drives in the Device Manager. Show in Devices and Printers and on taskbar notification area as Safely Remove?

Seems like you said you deleted or uninstalled all USB Hub, USB Mass Storage and USB SuperSpeed Hubs from Device Manager and rebooted to reinstall and this did not work.

Since your upgrade have you updated Chipset drivers for your system and any other important system driver ? Do you see under Universal Serial Bus Controllers - USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.

  5. If the bus on the Passport is 2.0 that would also explain the problem. Have you tried plugging into a 2.0 port? The 1tb Green Power drive being the model WD uses in those was simply removed from the non fan cooled enclosure when bought back when 7 was still in beta and now sits in a totally different USB 2.0 enclosure on the second desktop used for testing software as well as build. Not one problem on 10 as far as detection.

The Sata 3 drive recently replaced on the main build and placed in that enclosure at first since it was acting up as far as almost unable to be accessed due to how slow it was acting was found to run normally and now run in a second fan cooled enclosure by way of 2.0 not 3.0 while the enclosure is 3.0 capable. Even with 3.0 flash drives I tend to find those even work better when on a 2.0 port! I would try a 2.0 port for the time being to see if the drive is suddenly detected and mounted automatically by 10.

They did try plugging into 2.0 works fine there. WD My Passport is USB 3.0 & 2.0 and comes with the cable if this is one you have. Try different cable if have another USB 3.0 cable, if detected in Devices and Printers it will tell you if it is connected USB 3.0.

  7. Generally anything 3.0 will work on the 2.0 ports without any problems. I have several 3.0 flash drives recently added to the collection of flash drives here when 10 was first out that are plugged into a large 7 port 2.0 hub at times without any hiccups. I also was finding data transfers were going much faster when 3.0 flash drives were on 2.0 ports instead of 3.0! The 3.0 bus simply provides more current to allow for 6 devices rather the limit of 4 seen with 2.0.

One place of the two places you can look to see if there are any yellow marked items would be under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section at the bottom as well as taking a look in the Disk Drives section. Here I will the drive in the enclosure with on/off switch turned off and only see the two OS drives and two storage/backup drives listed under Disk Drives until hitting the switch. Once the drive is detected it appears on top.

I put a red mark on each side to indicate which one while the model information will identify which one anyways. From what I keep finding when looking at the numbers WD hasn't ever been able to get this problem cleaned up over the years since first models saw the same problems as you are now.

Here I had simply given up on the factory enclosure and a separate Acomdata model years back. The new one recently order is a Sambrent USB 2.0/eSata enclosure that takes Sata I and II drives not being quite rated for S3 models while those still work since the 1tb in it is just that a Sata III drive! The eSata will be put to use once I can make the space where the printer and some other equipment is sitting on top of the cabinet section of the computer desk here as well as get around to plugging the two eSata cables in from the ports on the case itself. The power comes from the ac adapter being external while still using the onboard sata controllers to get around any potential usb issues!

The old 1tb out of the WD Essentials enclosure I bought back in 2009 as I was saying is in the Acomdata enclosure plugged into the second desktop there. $26 can solve a world of hurt seeing the WD casing swapped for something that does work!

  9. WD Drive Management device *WD SES Device - USB Mass Storage Device show the Passport controller has been properly detected. Now for the internal connections and drive itself! Inside the casing you will find a standard 3.5" Green Power most likely if not WD Blue model drive you can install install internally inside the case or place in another enclosure if you are not able to debug this. As long as the drive itself isn't the problem.

The DM looks normal except you didn't open up the Disk drives item that's near the top under the Digital media devices to see if the drive itself is showing up. The controller on the Sambrent enclosure here simply shows USB Mass Storage device item as the standard item for the enclosure here as well as the WD casing there. A look in the Disk drives however will provide a total for the number of hard drives being seen.

Nope, when connected to USB 3.0 ports - HDD is not detected under "Disk Drives" in Device Manager.

Looks correct, see have 2 eXtensible Host Controllers top one is Asmedia then one Intel which is odd to me, there is a Generic SuperSpeed hub which is the USB 3.0 and possibly the back ports of the PC. ASMedia is using a Microsoft Driver i wonder if this is correct or if PC Manufacturer's site has anything different and fact of why it is there i am not sure yet. I think i see you have a PCI slot USB controller.
Try filling in as much system specs here as you can in your profile this helps us more to help you.

  12. Yet you will see it when plugged into a 2.0 port?! If everything is normal on a 2.0 port then you can only run it there since the enclosure and cable is either 2.0 or there's a problem. Working on the 2.0 side would show the drive itself is still working as it should but the card inside and/or cable is having a problem. But since it works on 3.0 ports when run on 7?

If you are still set on seeing the drive run on 3.0 only you might end needing a new 3.0 enclosure unless you have eSata ports on the case itself you can utilize which is much better! Then you are working free of the need to fuss around trying to get drivers since you are then running directly from the board only with a couple of connection points in between.

  14. There are ways to extract the drives since they are no different then any others just slapped into a tightly fit housing. With model changes and still the possibility it wasn't a 3.0 model to begin with while it may have worked on 7 it simply may end up not being able to on 10. You have to remember that 10 is three versions newer then 7 and has seen a number of changes in between.

That plus the UEFI factor possibly being the source of this can't be ruled out either! Just like trying to boot from a 10 stick may run into problems the WD model there could also be running into that as well. I have a suspicion you could be running into that rather any driver issue where this time you need to configure things for Legacy instead of UEFI in order to get 10 to detect it on 3.0.

True there is a lot we do not know yet with this PC or Drive, but Ultra's are both 3.0 & 2.0 as posted in links here from WD, so i suppose i am just speculating on what was shown so far here. I would not suggest him/her opening this WD and i see no screws so either snapped together or glued . As i have this drive and UEFI. I think has to do with where is it being plugged in which USB ports as i see a listed PCI USB Controller card. Asked about updated system drivers, chipset,etc..

    Here is my Device Manager
