Well that decision would come when there is no longer any option for returning the drive under factory warranty which might be still an option. But having actually removed a drive from one of the earlier models it requires a little patience but can be done and even see the drive put back in while the idea is to utilize a different bus entirely. Still got to use usb on a laptop but if your desktop pc has the eSata ports that would be an upgrade since you would be seeing the drive plugged directly into the port on the board by way of an internal extension cable. At one time you might have seen a 1394 Firewire type adapter before eSata was available.

Plus the issue of not being detected when plugged into a 3.0 port is not isolated with the Ultra model on just 10 alone ruling the version as the cause. I suspect the model is older or has a problem and why 10 isn't detecting as you see there from having an older chip inside as another possible cause despite having the same model name. Sometimes you need a firmware update in order to get something to work.

I have a WD My Passport which is encrypted, so that when I first plug it in, it only appears as a CD drive, which contains a piece of software to unlock it. Could that be happening here?

If you install the WD software then I believe it is possible to set it to auto-unlock (perhaps the Windows 7 Pc does this), but that software wouldn't be there to start with on a clean Windows 10 install.

Well nope, I aint having PCI Slot USB ports in my PC.
My Mobo is (upgraded Bios) : Asus Z97 Deluxe, https://www.asus.com/in/Motherboards/Z97DELUXE/

What is essentially happening is, when plugged for the first time... a pop-up window comes saying installing drivers and then it installs and pop window disappears. That one time I can see my HDD on 3.0 port. From, the next time I plug in nada nothing happens and HDD is not detected.

PS: I have checked health of HDD via HDtune and other software as well and its perfectly healthy + the cable is all good to go.

WD My passport - Not recognized in Win 10

I again checked with Win 7 and its working there, so I can confirm its windows 10 issue.
I have also updated with the latest WD passport firmware for my drive. - Same issue persists

One thing I like to ask is: Generally I used to use all drivers provided by Asus with Win 7, but after installing Windows 10 there was no need to install anything additionally from Asus/CD provided because all the drivers were automatically downloaded & installed by Windows 10 itself. You guys think I am doing it wrong and I should still install manually drivers for all components (Wifi,Sata,USB etc etc..) manually ?

  5. What I suspect here to be the problem of course would be the model series itself is the problem being seen since the drive works on everything else. This is why I had suggested investing in either a new enclosure or installing the drive internally and simply forget about the enclosure if you are only going to want to run the drive on 3.0 not 2.0 where it is working without problem.

So far with everything here on two separate custom builds, but not having run with any Asus boards now for close to a decade Gigabyte mainly while the old case saw an MSI board go in, 10 immediately located, downloaded, and installed every single driver and app needed. For the old discontinued now for several years tv tuner/video capture(composite RCA phono type input) used for vhs input from old vhs camcorder footages(now looking at capturing onto dvd from a friend who passed away back in 2010 for the surviving family members(his wife passed two years later) I substituted the 8.1 drivers and Media Center app from a different PCI Express model to get the old PCI card working!

Likewise 10 downloaded and installed the 8.1 drivers and software including the Creative Entertainment console that usually had to be set up separately that includes the EAX effects panel, mixer, equalizer, speaker settings, Crystalizer, etc. for the older model Creative X-Fi XtemeAudio card you used to either run the installer from cd or download the updates for that on 7 while 10 went right after things in order to simplify upgrading to 10. MS has geared everything to be almost totally automatic while certain things that do lack at least 8.1 support will be found to have need for manual attention.

The other thing I could suggest would be if you are only trying the drive on one of two 3.0 ports try the other port in case the first is foobar! If you have a bad port as one other thing we didn't get to yet that will gum the works up entirely! The preferred alternative unless the drive is moved between two pcs at times would be seeing it extracted and installed internally to provide the additional local storage space or simply run it in a much better enclosure! Having run WD drives for ages I found the enclosures they came out with rather under standard there!

Yeah i am sorry realized i had that part wrong a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller is for USB 2.0. I see from ASUS Site and your Device manager screen capture showing Intel and ASMedia USB 3.0 and 2.0.

    Intel® Z97 chipset :
    4 x USB 3.0/2.0 port(s) (4 at back panel, blue)

    Intel® Z97 chipset :
    8 x USB 2.0/1.1 port(s) (4 at back panel, , 4 at mid-board)

    ASMedia® USB 3.0 controller :
    6 x USB port(s) (2 at back panel, blue, 4 at mid-board)

You also stated you usually use ASUS CD since Windows 7 to install drivers but noticed Windows 10 installed all the proper system drivers. I would recheck this part as i looked at ASUS Site and saw Windows 10 drivers and for certain important drivers i would go to the manufacturer.

Either compare the driver versions in Device Manager to ones on ASUS site and make sure have all the correct updated drivers. What is more important is the ones listed under Chipset and SATA. Others like LAN, Wireless and Bluetooth you can also check. You can install Chipset it will tell you upon installation if you have latest or not and you can cancel install then as this can be part of your issue.

    https://www.asus.com/in/Motherboards/Z97DELUXE/HelpDesk_Download/

Me particularly i always go to the manufacturer's site when installing a new OS and for updates, i do not rely on Windows update alone. How many other ports have you tried this external drive on the back ones and the front ones ?

Seeing both ASmedia and Intel there makes me wonder why 2 different types would think either or. I have a X99 board with same drive and Windows 10 as said no issues do not think it's an incompatibility with Windows 10, maybe a bad drive, missing , outdated, corrupt or conflicting drivers. Also try a different USB 3.0 Cable even though you sate you feel it is good and all other USB 3.0 ports.

  7. I would agree with the check up at the Asus support site since that is one thing they usually stay on top of! I know that from having run with Asus for several years. 10 does tend to grab 8.1 drivers while 10 drivers are now just coming up for many products. Generally for each new version there's a wait while 10 is now finding most things accurately during the initial upgrade or clean install on it's own.

WD My passport - Not recognized in Win 10

Well i did do a clean install myself. Wonder is he has any other USB 3.0 Devices to try, flash drive another external drive. Believing chipset drivers may have something to do with this, but why the need for 2 different USB 3.0 eXtensible host controllers,Asmedia and Intel.
Maybe one is for the internal 19 pin USB Connection on the board, mine has USB 3.0 Renasas but no need for it's drivers.

  9. One thing I just noticed here was suddenly not being able to see the digital camera and it's SD Card detected when plugged in. The Sambrent external enclosure had to be turned off first then the H drive appeared! If he has any other usb drives or devices plugged in that could be the problem there.

    Friends,

My another USB 3.0 Thumb drive is working great on all ports, So I guess its the HDD that is the culprit for sure.

Apart from that, I actually always wanted to upgrade all drivers from Asus website but do not understand and gets confused always so never did it.... but now I guess its high time I learn abt it once and for all. Please can u guys take a little of your time and guide me on an separate thread which I created specifically to understand drivers here:

  11. Generally I had to go through the Global site and then finally onto the US extension in order to get to the latest updates a good number of years ago however. I haven't actually been there is some time however in the event they changed the layout any. But they were always reliable at keeping up with things back then. I simply wanted to change brands.
