We have several old Dell workstations that we upgraded from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 10 Pro a few years ago. That has been running fine till today. Now all those systems suddenly report: Windows is not activated.


When I try the troubleshooter I get:

We found a Windows 10 Home digital license for this device running Windows 10 Pro. To activate using this digital license you need to install Windows 10 Pro.


In Volume Activation Management Tool they still show up as Windows(R), Professional Edition Retail but now with License status: Notification and Genuine Status: Non Genuine.


We bought these systems with Windows 8 Pro factory installed, not with Windows 10 Home. It is unclear to me how the troubleshooter is able to find a license that was never installed on the system. But more importantly, I cannot get these systems in an activated state anymore.


Just to be clear, the hardware of these systems has not changed since we bought them. Windows was not recently reinstalled. They are all running 1803 for a long time now. The only recent change are microsoft software updates.


Any help is greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 Home will be $119, Pro $199.

Microsoft: Windows 10 Home costs $119, Pro costs $199



Which is good news actually, because Windows 8.1 is loads cheaper than previous versions (retail licensing at Windows 7 OEM prices). And it sort of puts a huge hole in the Windows subscription theory.

 

Windows 10 upgrade license

Hello guys,

I have 1 license of WIndows 8.1 FPP/retail license. I want to upgrade to WIndows 10, but I one thing is unclear to me.
If I upgrade, will WIndows 10 license be retail or it will "turn" into some sort of OEM license?

I ask this because I upgrade my PC, you know, more memory, replace HDD, and I intend to upgrade the MB and CPU to Kaby Lake platform sometime in the future, (and of course sell the replaced hardware)
This thing is not clearly mentioned anywhere.
