Windows 10: Weather Channel Win 10 App installed but can't be found

I installed the Windows 10 Weather Channel desktop app on my PC. After it installed it asked me if I wanted to pin an icon to my task bar. I said yes. However there is no icon on my task bar, in my start menu, or on my desktop. I cannot find it in the uninstall program list or in c:\Program Files or c:\Program Files (x86). There is no normal way to start or uninstall it.

But it IS installed because if I go to the Windows Store and click on it there, the button that normally starts a download says "Open". If I click on that, the app immediately starts - no download or anything.

Using Task Manager while it was running, I found that it is in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps which is hidden and allows me, as administrator, no access. I managed to take ownership of the folder and can now see some Weather Channel app files, but nothing that looks like an executable or an uninstall file.

The registry contains very many references to Weather Channel and to WeatherChannel but none point to an .exe file. Many of the references point to unreadable filenames in folders named
C:\Windows\WindowsApps\Weather.TheWeatherChannel_2016.614.79.0.......
Guess I know next to nothings about Windows apps downloaded from the store.

I REALLY want to uninstall the app, Any help will be much appreciated.

How can I download Weather Channel App - Version 2.2.5.0? I have it on my Windows 8.1 Laptop

I just got new PC- Win 10. My old PC - Win 7 had the -Weather Channel Desktop- Version 2.2.5.0. I also found this version for my Windows 8.1 Laptop. I can't find this version to download and I like the simplicity of it and the background changes with the
weather.

Hi, you should be able to do it using Powershell if you follow this guide; as you can access the relevant folder you can see the necessary information. This should perhaps appear as 'How to remove any app' (Part 1) rather than All Built-In Apps' - (Part 2).

Please note: universal apps do not use conventional exe files. They cannot be uninstalled using familiar desktop tools like Revo, or vis the Control Panel. They are based on an entirely different paradigm.

I followed the instructions exactly, ending with the command:
Get-AppxPackage -allusers Weather.TheWeatherChannel_2016.614.79.0_x64__t3yemqpq4kp7p | Remove-AppxPackage
The command completed with no errors or any other message to the console, just the return of the normal prompt. Then I rebooted.

I then found:
1. The Weather Channel folders and files in C:\Profram Files\WindowsApps are still there
2. The Registry entries are still there
3. The Windows app store still says the app is installed (see earlier in this thread)

I would still lone to get rid of this program, all its files and registry entries.

Ah, sorry.. I think I've made a mistake.. you did say 'desktop app'. Initially I read that too quickly and 'app' said to me 'universal app'. But then you said you'd got it from the store - and you also said it's in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps - which is where universal apps are installed. There's something inconsistent there.

Could you tell me clearly how you installed it and where you got it from?

Note universal apps don't have registry entries- desktop ones usually do, so I'm confused there too.

Now, for a desktop program that won't uninstall you need a program such as Revo uninstaller.
If that's what it is, download and run it- if that program is listed, you can uninstall it with support from Revo to scan for leftovers.

If it's not, you can force uninstall sections of it by browsing to places where there are exe's.
Problem with that is, because that's a section of the program you may not pick up all of it.

You can try reinstalling it first (as admin) and then see if Revo lists it.

 

The Weather Channel calls it their Windows 10 DeskTop app. I got it from the Windows store which sent it to my laptop and installed it for me. It is definitely NOT an "old" style app. It installed 3 folders in WindowsApps and I can't find any other place it installed folders files, etc. It may have but I can't find them. It did not add any new folders to c:\Program Files. It has added a huge number of registry entries.

I have sent an email to Weather Channel support, but they have not replied. They are not known for replying. *Sad

When I listed the the installed apps using PowerShell per your instructions, it listed the "universal" apps right along with the Weather Channel app. That together with its presence in WindowsApps indicates it is a universal app.

 

Ok, so definitely a universal app, so my first idea was appropriate. I'm puzzled there are related registry entries.

Are you sure it doesn't appear in the start menu? Click e.g. the A then W and look down the list for W. If it appears there, right clicking it should offer an uninstall option. Also check under T ('The Weather Channel').

Can you try reinstalling it from My Library?
Launch the Store and click your profile icon at the top and select My Library from the menu.

If you can reinstall it, you may find you have the appropriate icon created in the Start menu.

You might try this:
Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter by following the steps below:

• Type “Troubleshooting” in the search box and press Enter.
• Click on ‘View All’ on the top left pane.
• Click on “Windows Store Apps” from the list and follow the on-screen prompts for troubleshooting.

Do you have a system restore point created before you installed it? Or a disk image or a system image you can restore?

It would be worth doing a general web search for advice.. my first attempt seems to give lots of results about a desktop program of a similar name- rather than a universal app which is the one you are interested in.
