Windows 10: WebClient Cannot Start; Error 2; Windows 10 Enterprise 1809

Having issues mounting SharePoint sites as network drives led me to this problem:


When I open Services and try to manually trigger WebClient, I get the following error:




WebClnt.dll exists in the directory C:\Windows\System32, so what is the issue here?

For us to know how we can help you start the WebClient service in your Windows 10 computer, please answer these questions:

• How did you attempt to start the service?
• Have you installed updates on the computer?
• What is the current Startup type selected for the WebClient service?

Follow these steps to check the Startup type of the service:

• Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard.
• Type services.msc then press Enter.
• Locate WebClient on the list of services.
• Right-click on the said service and select Properties.

You will see the current Startup type of the service. You can also stop and restart the service on the same window.

Windows 10 WebClient won't start

Running Windows 10 Pro and the WebClient service won't start. Gives me error:

Windows could not start the WebClient service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

The trouble is this error is immediate, no wait period involved. Its a brand new machine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Let's try to perform the following steps:

• Right-click on the WebClient service in your Services
  on the computer.
• Select Properties.
• Go to the Log On tab.
• Select Local System account and tick the box for Allow service to interact with desktop.
• Hit Apply then OK.
