  1. Weird things going on in computer

About a week ago my mother turned the computer off and started in the morning which she never does. It wanted her Microsoft password then her Gmail password. Today I did an update on Windows it wanted her Microsoft password then her Gmail password. When she went to go into her online banking the account number or username that's always there remember me is checked off it was gone so she retyped it but couldn't get her password to her but that could be her age and typing skills. I have changed all three passwords but I know there's hackers out there that use spyware or malware so they can see e

    cortana does weird things

    Hi Joris,

If after installing all updates for Windows 10 does not help in resolving problems in Cortana, there might be an application or service that is conflicting with Cortana to work properly, or that a component within Windows may have been damaged or corrupted.
Can you tell us if there are any third-party applications installed in your computer? If there are, kindly perform a clean boot environment in Windows. Performing a clean boot environment would start the system in a reduced functionality and in a basic state
using the default settings of Windows. This way, we would know if there are software conflicts that are occurring in Windows. While in a clean boot environment, attempt to use Cortana and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, we can determine that there
is a third-party service or application that is causing the issue. You may perform a clean boot environment in Windows by following the steps below:

    • Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    • From Start, search for msconfig.
    • Select msconfig or System Configuration
      from the search results.
    • Click the Services tab, and then click to select the
      Hide all Microsoft services
      check box.
    • Click to select the upper half of the check boxes in the Service list.
    • Click OK, and then tap or click Restart.
    • After the computer finishes restarting, determine whether the problem still occurs.
      • If the problem still occurs, repeat steps 1 through
        6
, but clear the lower half of the check boxes in the Service
        list that you originally selected.
      • If the problem does not occur, repeat steps 1 through
        6
, and select only the upper half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the
Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
      • If you still experience the problem when only one service is selected in the
Service list, this means that the selected service causes the problem, and you should go to step
        11. If no service causes the problem, go to step 8.
    • Repeat steps 1 and 3 in this section.
    • Click the Startup tab, and then click to select the upper half of the check boxes in the
      Startup Item list.
    • Click OK, and then click Restart.
      • If the problem still occurs, repeat steps 8 and
        9
, but clear the lower half of the checked boxes in the Startup Item list that you originally selected.
      • If the problem does not occur, repeat steps 8 and
        9
, and select only the upper half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the
Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
      • If you still experience the problem after only one Startup Item
is selected in the Startup Item list, this means that the selected
Startup Item causes the problem, and you should go to step
        11
. If no Startup Item causes this problem, a Microsoft service
probably causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service
may be causing the problem, repeat steps 1 through
        7
without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in each step.
    • After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the
System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

If the above troubleshooting steps did not work in resolving the problem, you may attempt to reset your PC using the
    Recovery options in Windows.

We are looking forward to an update from you.

  3. computer doesn't go to sleep automatically

The only task in that list that is not a part of the system task is the "FreeDownloadManagerNetworkMonitor". We suggest that you end the said task by going again to the
Task Scheduler. To do so, kindly follow these steps:

    • Follow the steps that we have provided you before to display all running tasks.
    • Once all running tasks are displayed, select "FreeDownloadManagerNetworkMonitor", then click on
      End Task.

If ending its task doesn't resolve your concern, we suggest that you try to uninstall it by following the steps in this article:

Repair or remove programs in Windows 10
. Once done, kindly check if the issue persists.

Kindly get back to us once you're done with the steps that we have provided.

Weird things happening to my computer.

" I have been in recovery mode .... I did notice, that my computer is trying to restore back to Windows 8.1"

You are in the Windows Recovery or HP recovery console ? Windows should look like the screens in this tutorial - How to Use the Advanced Startup Options to Fix Your Windows 8 or 10 PC

"it would get to 100% and load for an additional 5 or so minutes, then it would give me a message telling me the back up failed"

The HP recovery drive (usually D drive) boot files may have been corrupted or inaccessible if it's trying to recover to Day One. You realize this would have erased your files ? If you want to do this, you needed to have created a usb recovery drive which copied this partition (you're entitled to one copy). If not, you can order recovery dvd's from HP (obviously this will take a few days to get). Go to this link for more info - HP PCs - Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive | HP® Customer Support

Did you try the HP SMART disk check ? I suspect there's nothing wrong with your HDD if the Reset option got to 100%. At this point, I would see if you can start in Safe Mode with Netwrking in the Windows Recovery Console under Troubleshoot/Advanced options/Startup Settings in above tutorial so you can try to save your files to ext media before more drastic steps.

Then, if you're in SAfe Mode with networking, I would attempt the prev suggestions to download a bootable install of Windows 10 on DVD or usb which will reinstall 10 from scratch. There's a good forum tutorial here - Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums[2]=Installation%20and%20Setup or another, simpler, step by step here - Where to Download Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 ISOs Legally
