Well, after playing around for about 20 minutes...

Well, I've never created an account that way, I've always used an existing account.. so I guess I never saw that link *Wink It's a pretty unintuitive place to put it by any stretch of the imagination, but I guess it makes some sense in that you are creating a new account, just a new local account.

  2. Your not wrong, it's almost like they want people to use live or create a live account *Tongue

It would be nice if they made the local account creation a little clearer.

  3. Well that's just it. They really don't want you creating a local account. They want it to be a difficult thing to find, so that you'll give up and connect using a Microsoft account.

Notice if you go to a Download site like CNET, and the valid download link is hard to find, but the spyware laden "installer" download is big and in green type? Same tactic.

Well, after playing around for about 20 minutes...

I saw someone being able to pin Control Panel to start. *searches more* What an inconvenient way to do it... show the icon desktop, create a shortcut of it, then pin it to Start.

I stand my point for the Virtual Desktop. All instances of the open software are together, despite on an another desktop still. So, if you misclick, you fall back on whatever desktop the first instance is... Also, it's middle clicking.

Also, thanks for pointing out the thing during the installation and I agree with Jody above. They REALLY want you to use your account. And I don't like that. At all. Luckily I used an account I use for spam/"anonimousity".

I will also have to play with the Desktops. SysInternals has had such a thing for quite a while. I remember Mark had to use it once to get an anti-virus program to run to repair a system. I wonder if they can be used in such a way.

I will also have to figure out exactly what the little indicators below the icons on the Taskbar mean relative to Multiple desktops being open.

  6. Psst....

If you don't care for the start menu as I do, right click on the Taskbar, Properties, Start Menu, uncheck Use the Start menu instead of the Start Screen.

Sign out, sign back in, proper Start menu! *Wink *Tongue

I was able to open IE on two different virtual desktops. One desktop showed it with one tab and the other had it with two tabs. If you hover over the icons, you can see the open windows and what is in them. That way you can tell which one you need to choose, but it has been that way for a while.

As far as signing in the local account, during the install, I just asked to create another account and on the bottom of that page there was an option to use a Local Account. 8.1 was set up pretty much the same way.

Well, after playing around for about 20 minutes...

    I'm sorry, I don't get it.

I have reinstalled Win10 several times in VHD cause I was having issues with getting it setup for VHD Boot on my Surface Pro. Which I do have setup now and it is excellent.

Not one single time did it force me to create a Live account to log in, like it did in Win8.
ONLY a local account was created by default, every time.

ONLY when I tried to access something like the store did it want me to switch to a live account.
That is exactly how it is supposed to work. And it does.

  9. I will call it 8.2. A bit slower shutting down / starting. I know its early days. Feels a little bit smoother to me.

Agreed. But I think it may happen quite a lot. I have, so far, found very few "new" functions and, as you say, perhaps users should be cautious regarding assumptions, without checking if those same items did not already exists in Windows 8.

LOL. Maybe the forums will now be flooded with comments "I going back to good old Windows 8"

One thing that has occurred to me. Maybe a Start menu users can answer?

I customised, and became a dedicated user, of the Modern start menu. As it happens, I am not a great fan of using items from the store, but, for those who are doing so, wont that new start menu take up quite a lot of real estate on the desktop, if you do, indeed, have a lot of "Apps"?

P.S. Later. OK. I have been fooling around a little and now find I can right click and "Unpin those icons. They are still available in the "All Apps" of the new start menu. Nevertheless, I see little benefit in cluttering the desktop with that Icon menu option

Is it possible to make the start menu simple, so that its more in line with the W7 version of it? I for one is not a fan of the app mess they have going, and I have a feeling that the Start Menu will be a pain to work with - at least for me *Smile

    Hi and Welcome to TenForums,

If you just unpin the apps that are showing you should only be left with the standard start menu, is that what you mean?

All of the Windows 8 installs and now Windows 10 I have done, and I have done quite a few, would attempt to make you create or use the Microsoft Account logon. Only if you installed while offline would it just give you the option of a Local Account.

I only run desktop systems, and have no experience with the Surface unit.

  15. You can always create a local account regardless whether you are on or offline, just click the link saying create new account and the click the link to create a local account.
