They don't even let you reposition them lol. I'm used to having my browser in those spaces!!!

  2. Yeah apparently the search is going to have Cortana which will be interesting but not quite interesting enough for me to have it on my task bar. That stuff should be in the start menu or on hotkeys where it belongs.

  3. Same here. I have my desktop set up fairly conservatively.
Is there anyone yet that feels they perfer v8.1 to what they've seen in the Technical Preview?

My guess is you may need Workstation 11 to make it work.. VMWare is pretty notorious for needing a new version when new windows versions come out.

For what it's worth, Client Hyper-V in 8.1 Update 1 works just fine, and has great graphics support (then again, in "enhanced mode" it uses the 3d virtualization...)

    Hi there

Thanks for reply -- I think my original download was bad -- in any case I've switched to the ENTERPRISE version which seems to be OK now.

    Cheers

I too was taken aback by having to login to the laptop with my Live Account. I then discovered this thread and created a local account. But I then discovered a glitch being I could not install apps from the Store because I had to use a Live Account. I tried using my existing one but received an error stating a Live Account was already being used by the laptop. Ok, makes sense but I didn't want to create a second Live Account for the local account. I then by accident discovered that by disconnecting the existing Live Account through "PC Settings > Users and Accounts > Your Profile" (while being logged under my Live Account) that the profile was copied to a local account. Now I just have the one login (using the same name and password). When I go to the Store to install apps I the connect to my Live Account. And I can disconnect at anytime and everything looks the same on my desktop.

Getting W10 TP to run like my W8.1 installation only requires that I switch W10 back to using the Start Screen and then installing Classic Shell in the Desktop mode. I actually like W10 TP better, because so far, it seems to be a bit snappier when it comes to opening up programs, although my boot times aren't much different using an SSD.

One thing I have discovered is "Change the size of all items" or "Change only text size" has no effect on the Font size or size of the Start Menu so if you were running a resolution of 1920 x 1080 @ DPI at 200% (Extra Large) or even increased the text size the start menu remains at its default size and the text would be hard to raed.

I've got to admit I don't like not being able to alter the size of the icons on the Start Menu.

I've already made a comment on that -- Menu is almost UNREADABLE on a 4K enabled monitor -- in spite of being able to change text size and other desktop items.

Application menus are OK but the start menu text size doesn't seem customiseable in any way -- perhaps I'll send Ms the cost of my next Eye test and glasses if I need them !!!!

    Cheers

  12. I've noticed that the new window animations are quicker and it makes 10 feel way faster than 8.

I will say that the Preview is more brisk and speedy (more responsive). I suppose I found 8.1 to be more customizable that's all.
Can you imagine if in the coming months, something is added to the Preview that slows it down? LOL (just our luck!). I doubt that though since it seems they've largely cleaned up what was in the 8x codebase.

I installed the tech preview on a new Dell Latitude e7440 at work, and it installed without any issues pretty quickly.

Overall, i'm not blown away. It's not bad in any way, but it's not revolutionary in any way either. Thus far very subtle visual changes. It's really like a service pack for Windows. It's about the equivalent thus far of the change from 8.0 to 8.1.

  15. Agreed. It's perfectly fine, but I wonder why the rave reactions as compared with 8.1? I think 8.1 with a start menu replacement was just as nice. I suppose windowed Metro apps are nice too, but I won't be using that many.
