"We're getting search ready" error - Windows/Cortana Search

I tried the search everywhere option and it works…
I do not understand what is going on to be honest….

I fixed an autohotkey to “Winkey+F" and I use this now hopping that Cortana will be fixed in a future update. If this problem exists after a clean install then it is a bug which should be fixed by Microsoft

  2. I think you're onto something here. It definitely has something to do with the user accounts, and not necessarily the one you're currently logged onto. I'm thinking it's wisest to create an offline local admin account during installation, then create a new user account to go online with your MS ID to switch to and just leave the local admin account alone (never change the type, never delete it, and don't mess with its user folder/files).

Also, make sure you have the Windows Firewall service turned ON (under Windows Services), even if you use another firewall program. Turning off the WF service disables store apps from installing or updating, and *I suspect*, Cortana (which is essentially a store app) from working properly. You don't have to turn the WF itself on, but make sure the SERVICE is running. I still get the "we're still getting search ready" message, but with WF service enabled, she also gives me full results even while telling me she's not. Go figure. lol

I don’t know whether it is helpful but in my computer there is only one user (administrator) and I login with my MS ID

  4. "We're getting search ready" error - Windows/Cortana Search

Well I'm happy to say that I'm a step further along but not at the end yet.

I had been stuck with the 'We are getting search ready' message and while it was able to search apps, documents, store and web it would not find any control panel items or settings options.

I had tried deleting the search folder in programdata, I had reset Cortana, I had rebuilt the index in index options - none seemed to make a difference.

In my latest step, I went into Index options and took a look what one of my working PCs was indexing and ticked and unticked boxes till my other PC was the same.

This left me with the following only, complete with the same exclusions:

"We're getting search ready" error - Windows/Cortana Search [IMG]

I saw it was re-indexing and, after about a minute, I was able to go to the search box and finally the 'We are getting search ready' message is gone. It is now also showing 'old' control panel items and settings related to the 'old' control panel. However, what it is not showing is any settings related to the 'new' metro-esque settings application. So when I type 'updates' I see 'View Installed updates' as a listing, but not 'windows update settings' or 'manage map settings'.

    Aaargh - so close !

I would just like to add to the frustrated user base! I am getting this too on Win 10 Pro x64, blimmin' "We are getting search ready..." and nothing showing other than a bing search (unless I manually press "My Stuff" when it clearly just runs an unindexed search).

I've stuck Win 10 on 7 various machines now and it's only occurring on one (which happens to be my master machine grr!). I've tried all suggestions in here and I can't solve it. I hope some clever bod manages to figure out what the heck is going on! *Smile

"We're getting search ready" error - Windows/Cortana Search

I too was having this same issue on an upgraded Win 7 box. I noticed that when I started a search in the Cortana box and while the "We're getting search ready" box came up the SearchUI/Cortanta task was taking 3-4% of the CPU. So I just left it that way (with the search dialog still up) and came back an hour later and everything was working fine. Right before that I had toggled the firewall on/off but I don't think that was it.

"We're getting search ready" will come up every time indexing is doing is thing and is supposed to go away when it's done. Since "fixing" my problem, I've seen it come up at least once when adding new stuff, but it went away once the indexer finished. That's normal operation for the lucky folks.

Prior to fixing my issue (and like others are seeing) no amount of waiting is enough for it to go away. I let my main computer run for over a day before working to fix it.

Right, same here. No amount of waiting was enough for it to go away.....until I let the dialog say active and then walked away for an hour.

Add me to the list of affected users. I have upgraded 3 laptops and only have the issue on one of them. Tried all the above without success so far. Hopefully there'll be a windows update that resolves this soon.

There's quite a few topics about this in the Windows Feedback app - I've upvoted the relevant ones. No idea if it'll make a difference.

  14. Eureka, I fixed it! (for now, at least? lol) Here's how:

step 1: create a new *local* user account, admin enabled (I named mine "Admin"). Make sure to use a password.
step 2: make sure your MS account is linked to your main user account (the one you're using that is search-broken)
step 3: convert your main user account to a standard (non-Admin) account.
step 3: log over to the new "Admin" account, let Windows set up the account. Change NOTHING.
step 4: reboot and/or relog into the main standard-user MS linked account.

for me, this appears to have fixed everything. Cortana has interests working, can search all my files and settings, and Windows Update appears to be functioning normally. The only catch here is that since your main user account is non-admin, you will be prompted by UAC to log in to the newly created "Admin" account to change settings or installations. I'm not 100% sure why this works, but something about Cortana doesn't like being attached to the active administrator account. Also worth noting that while my main MS user works great in this config, actually logging over to the Admin user account produces the unresponsive Cortana/taskbar bug that we're all familiar with. It seems she doesn't moonlight, she only wants to be attached to one user per PC and she'd prefer it be a local non-admin?

I have very similar experience, she is very picky.
I for one simply reinstalled windows a few times until I got an install whose search worked right away (took 4 absolutely clean installs...)
So I have only a single Admin MS account user, and Cortana is working currently, even after reindexing and pointing my user files around to other directories.

If you get search to work on an account, Never try to switch it back to local again, or it may break forever again. Once I turned a working search user to local, going back to MS didn't give me working search operations again.

Like chrisnyc75 explained, she only wants one account, and only the first MS account you ever use after Windows 10 installation.
Cortana is picky and very much monogamous it seems...
