Windows 10: What actions are appropriate if SFC and DISM show no errors?

Many have experienced plenty of issues with win 10 installations after upgrades from say WIN 7.

The issues are just about all related to the disappearance of MS Edge and the Start Menu.

Just about all the advice from MS personnel on the MS Community forum states that one should run the SFC /scannow command , followed by the more complicated DISM command and then finally the very complicated powershell command.
Almost no replies are made after one runs the SFC command and even the DISM command and no errors are found.

What should one conclude if the SFC command and the DSIM command report no errors?
Secondly what is the best next step in trying to recover from the issue at hand?

Notifications not working

SFC found nothing wrong, both before and after the DISM tool, and the Action Center Notifications still aren't showing up

Thanks, that worked for opening the SFC and DISM Tool. But even though the SFC said that the problem was repairable and the DISM said that the operation was completed successfully, still unable to open Action Center or see notifications.

 

The next option is an In place upgrade repair install. Please see details in the Tutorials section. One of the good things about Win 10. Keeps all progs, most associations, disables system restore.

That won't fix everything 'cos it aims to KEEP your settings.
Nor will it fix 3rd party program conflicts.
(For that use a Clean Boot to diagnose + Nirsoft's Shellexview)

Nor will it fix all driver issues.

Check the event log (event viewer).

... it depends what the symptoms are... that's just the basics really.

Otherwise, to try to avoid all this, use disk imaging periodically, so you always have a good build you can restore quickly and without tech assistance.

I do not have any other drivers installed that are not already 'taken into account' by WIN 10.
I have NO 3rd party software installed. I only have Chrome as an added browser.
If next Tuesday an update runs and after that, the Start menu fails and MS Edge disappears , what could the cause be?

Is there any log files one should access and copy before hand.

I have already got a restore point available.

 

Some people have reported Avast (which you say you don't have) s having been related to such a failure. Clearly not your case.

Others suggest booting to safe mode, then back in normal mode restores the Start Menu.

Some have recommended using a Powershell command to fix this, as you say, but unless this has changed, a bug from build 10586 on means the Powershell command breaks some apps, so cannot be recommended.

I can't tell you what's breaking things in your case, I'm afraid. Have you checked your laptop is win 10 compatible?

Beyond that, others who've worked thru this will have more ideas hopefully- and feel free to search the many related threads here.

Most experienced folk here would say the safest is to do a clean install. As you have so little installed- well, that's the obvious way to go.

 

Just two comments relating to your points above:

W10 drivers have been known to cause problems for some devices where a more recent driver is installed over a manufacturer's recommended one. The Reliability History view allows you to look back and see what drivers might have been updated so that you can roll back and see if it fixes the problem. The History view is quite a useful one in my opinion and worth saving periodically if you want to keep track of what is happening on your system. Type reliability in the search box if you want to access it.

The Chrome browser has also been known to trigger some problems at login but these tend to be quite specific, see this for an example.

I agree that system images are good to have but they only help software related errors, when MS triggers a system failure by their update process then one has to wait for MS to fix this because their updates tend to come back to bite you (unless you turn them off), the system image ends up being a short term fix.

Yes I agree I have ended up every time solving the problem with a clean install, and if it happens again after Tuesday it will be relatively painless.

I checked out the reliability history and it was very interesting!

Just about all the "issues" are related to Internet Explorer.

IExplorer stops responding -- 4 instances since the clean install done on the 29th January 2016. The details of why is very flimsy.

The typical log file entry is always the same. IE explorer stopped interacting with windows

Next is, IE explorer stops working. 3 cases. Running "check for a solution" always states no solution found.

On the day when I re-installed Win 10,
"search" stopped working twice - no solution found;
Downloaded Maps manger failed once - no solution found;
MS Messaging failed twice - no solution found.
All the drivers installations were successful.

On the 1st February, 5 routines related MS Messaging stopped working, and one Windows shell experience failed. - no solution found to all of these.

So far therefore not much can be said as to what is causing any problems.
So now I think I am reasonably well prepared for Patch Tuesday and will see what happens after that.
