What are your thoughts on Windows10?

What build are you complaining about?

Builds as recent as 10130 were basically unusable for me.

The current build is 10240. I've been happy with that. It may be about as reliable as Windows 8.1. (Which was never perfect on my hardware, but it wasn't bad.)

As with any OS upgrade I've seen since XP, it runs the risk of not installing properly. There may be no drivers available for old hardware. (Drivers are written by the hardware makers, not Microsoft.) Appliance PC makers (especially for notebook PCs) may not support the upgrade.

Every time Microsoft releases a new OS with an upgrade offer, I worry that a lot of people will try it who probably shouldn't (without help). 10 is the worst so far, because it's free, and basically pushed on the whole world of Win 7 and 8 users. (I know that it's not mandatory, but it's a shiny new OS. And it's free.) I hope that it doesn't drive too much trade to the PC repair business.

  2. well, the taskbar still decides not to auto-hide, and gets stuck un-hidden. I have to restart explorer every time... :/

Little by little this OS is growing on me. I thought I would have tons of problems with a 7 yr old system, but thankfully it's running as smooth as butter now for 2 days.I still miss full Aero and wishing I could figure out the 20 - 30 seconds of black screen during each boot... but happy non the less. Will be upgrading to a slightly newer mobo (Rampage Extreme III) and about 12GB of Corsair DDR3 Vengeance and maybe a better video card... maybe that might solve the black screen *Smile

  7. If you download the free upgrade to windows 10, make sure that you make a back up of your windows 7 or 8 program. After 1 year if you get a problem the cost of the repair will include the full price of Windows 10. My son, who warned me of this, is a computer tech at a well known computer shop in the UK, and as such deals with Windows 10 all day long. He currently is setting up new Computers with Windows 10.

  8. What are your thoughts on Windows10?

I was expecting to have to go back to 8.1 on at least one PC, maybe two? But issues I had with the preview builds are gone now. *Biggrin

Well after a pretty good experience with the preview, I updated my Windows 7 system (after backing it up of course). What a mess. On my first attempt I got page in non page pool, system thread exception in netio.sys, system service exception, and dpc watchdog crashes.

I restored from backup and tried again. This time wasn't so messed up but my last straw was when I went into the task scheduler. I got endless complaints about tasks that didn't exist that the upgrade has removed. I even had folders in the scheduler that showed empty, but when I tried to open the folder I would get these errors. Also, sfc showed unfixable (it was clean on windows).. And I had system freezes. This was not a clean upgrade at all, and a big mess was left behind.

So I decided to do a fresh install, which is major a pain because of all the licensed software I had to reinstall. But this really worked well, the system appears to be really stable, sfc is clean, etc. - I am happy now but it was a lot of work.

I just wonder how this is going with computer non-savvy folks who don't maintain their computers very well. I bet it is a mess.

  10. It's progress over 8/8.1. Buggy but it has potential. Still, there's too much of Windows 8 is in it, don't see a need to upgrade my work desktop (7 Pro) or home desktop (Ubuntu 14.04). I have a Dell tablet from work that was running 8.1 and I upgraded that immediately with no regrets after two days. I'm on a spare laptop right now that I upgraded from 7 Pro that I'm using as my primary test machine.

Outside of the normal bugs I still strongly dislike the separate "Settings" app from the Control Panel, I'd go as far as calling it moronic. Leave all that stuff in one place, I hate that "two OS's in one" nonsense that Win 8 debuted. The built in apps like Mail and Calendar seem improved over 8 (once I get them to actually work) but are still inferior to Gmail's web interface or OWA so I see no point in ever using them outside of trying to get more use out of the Action Center's notifications.

Little search tricks/shortcuts that worked in Windows 7 & 8 don't work in 10, for example if you'd type 'tcpip' in the search box and hit Enter in 7 it'd take you right to the network adapter screen. I'll miss stuff like that, being in IT I'd use small shortcuts like that many times per day.

    • I still greatly prefer File Explorer in Windows 7 compared to 8/10.
    • I'll never use Cortana since it sends every ounce of information back to MS.
    • The Start menu is back but you still don't have the customization depth of 7 (creating folders, etc).
    • The "Life at a glance" side of the Start menu is a complete waste to a user like me.

For now, IMO, if you're on 8 then you use upgrade to 10. If you're on 7 you should stay put. To each their own though.

The very first build I used in the insiders program convinced me that Windows 10 is the way to go. I have found that gaming in Win 10 is great, far better than in 7. I missed 7 for about oh 2 hours or so.

I got a fresh .iso using the Media Creation Tool. Winver shows Build 10240. Try it and see.

What are your thoughts on Windows10?

not really happy and I have a debate with myself whether move back to windows 7 or stay with windows 10

    1. have to use the microsoft account in order to access to all functions in windows (like windows store, cortana, xbox etc)
    2. consumes more VRAM (roughly 60MB+ VRAM)
    3. so many junk software that can't be disabled
    4. feel so exotic ,don't feel like it's home, I remember when I saw windows xp first, I immediately fell in love with it but I don't feel like about windows 10
    5. so many bugs ,my event viewer is full of error messages because of time zone issue (it affects to so many people in South Asian region)
    6. there is no big performance improvement in games, I tested unigine heaven and it didn't show big improvement, maybe 1,2 fps?
    7. don't like the metro style much, it looks so dull , the aero style was so perfect and attractive.
    8. the metro style has another settings ,as an example go to start and then settings ,it's almost same as what shows in the classical control panel, why two things for same purpose? and it's not just that, you have to move from metro to classical desktop from time to time in certain options, it's so messy. so this windows 10 isn't just for us ,it's also for tablets. why microsoft can't release a separate version just for tablets? microsoft could at least include an option for tablet mode before installing ,so the user can select, the targeted platform and then the OS will adapt according to that.

you know what I decided to stay with Windows 10, because it has superior memory management.
I just opened nearly 50+ of tabs in chrome (chrome is known for memory hogging) , edge, photoshop, aida, notepad+, 7z, and a password manager, youtube converter, chat programs, watched a couple of videos in youtube, notepad, and I did everything just with 4GB, I didn't close any program and I moved from program to program to test their response time and how long it takes to draw their windows in screen and I also tested how long it takes to minimize and maximize when the memory is used heavily . the memory goes like 3.9GB but never the system hangs or slows down, the system is still super fast and smooth. in windows 7 if I opened 20+tabs in chrome, it starts slowing down when moving to another tab, specially after watching a youtube video and I can never do like this in windows 7 even with latest updates. I think windows 10 is impressive in resource handling and quite suitable for old pcs too. so I recommend windows 10. *Smile

I tried Win10 but after 2 days I was forced to go back to Win7. Problem was that Win10 would disable my home network every time the computer would go into sleep mode and then wake up. Everytime I would go to use my computer I'd have zero network connectivity, go into the network screen and everything is unenabled. Other than that I liked it but I can't deal with that crap constantly. If I hear of a fix for that problem I wouldn't mind trying it again.
