What has happened to my Taskbar?

My TASKBAR suddenly went AWOL It had quite a large number of icons, probably around 50, almost all of which vanished. In fact the only ones left were in the overspill thingy. I transferred those to the Bar and a few more returned automatically, following a number of Boots, plus I added some back from the Start Menu but that procedure stopped working. I only have one 'line' of icons whereas I previously had four. Plus the Bar itself is not as it was: There is no overspill area, no up/down arrows to reveal hidden icons, no arrow to display the Desktop list, nothing to separate the Notification area etc. Most or all of the icons on the far left and right are present, eg. search, Cortana and Task View / battery /speakers / keyboard / Notifications etc. It is what should be displayed between them that is missing.

I expected to restore the Taskbar in Settings but nothing tried there made any difference. It is the first time I have anything quite like that happen.

    :)
