Upper graph is showing percentage of disk in use. Graph below is showing transfer rate. Upper percentage isn't showing percentage of maximum transfer rate. It could show 100% with transfer rate only 1 MB/s.

Check HDtune data in pictures below

One thing that crossed my mind with this is could the unseen culprit be related to swap disk memory. Depending on how much ram is installed some fine tuning here may help - limiting the swap disk size could control disk overhead, as some processes for some reason seem to use it by default even if RAM is free

Uninstall the store Skype app even if you don't use it.

    Honestly.

I'm not sure what it does or why but it destroys disk usage after restart (only noticeable on my old machines).

I use the old Win32 Classic Version of Skype which is OK and doesn't have this issue.

  7. I had it in FRANZ on ON but now I deleted it. FRANZ is a very cool Multichat program that I often use. (Can I call it multichat, hahaha!)

But yeah, I deleted the SKYPE part, and hopefully all will be just fine.

This I mean > Franz – a free messaging app for Slack, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Telegram and more

One thing crossed my mind.. RingTailCoon, are you using Avira antivirus? It has this habit of running a scan, when you start computer.

    You can try:
    • Look at the file Windows.edb under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows
If the file is huge ( seen cases with many GB's) then you should delete it and let Windows re-create it.
To delete: open Services and disable Windows Search then delete. Once done turn it back on.
    • Open Task Scheduler. Under Microsoft->Windows->Customer Experience Improvement Program. Right click->disable the 2 tasks. You don't need them and been known to cause problems. MS collect data and send it in the background background. This is part of my optimization after Windows install.

  11. Did number 1 and my file is only 340MB. (So I leave it alone!)
Did number 2 and my PC just went silent... I think it was sending... something... No more HDD rattling! *Smile

Those tasks basically collect, pack and send telemetry information to Microsoft, thats the reason for high CPU and HDD usage. I also disable that along with the "Telemetry and Customer Experiences" service in services.msc, even in powerful systems that thing tends hog big resource chunks... pretty much bad optimizations, or not at all...

Good to hear !!! IMO, do No. 1 too even it's 340MB. Start out fresh with the upgrade.
Next, Run defrag to compact everything.

Mark "Solved" if you're happy to help others.

  14. You know what? I leave it be, it does no damage (blue screening or what) and usually it's over with a couple of minutes. And my PC is still merrily running along.

Oh btw, when I stop indexing my pc is slower than when it's active.
