    Wow.

When you download, you will download the "Media Creation Tool". When you run it you choose USB key and it does the rest.

When you do the inplace repair / upgrade it will take you to the Creators Update. I always recommend having an Image of your system and a backup of your data. Agree the tutorial says your file will be fine and Brink really knows his stuff, I just like having a plan B.

I already have a clone via Acronis, and a disc image via the W7 part of the 'Backup and Restore'

For some reason I have been able to do that ?

I agree that Brink knows his stuff, but that does not stop 'me' making an error !

When it has all been done I will let you know the result.

Well folks, I have downloaded the correct version of W10 and used the Windows Media Creator to make a USB bootable install drive. I have followed Brinks tutorial to the letter ...
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

I was able to select the option to keep my files and programmes. When all was done I went through the installation procedure and after my machine notified me it was working on updates, at 29% it restarted. After a short time I got the dreaded BSOD back again with this error message giving this file as the cause ... STXII.SYS

The machine then restored the old version of Windows and threw up this error message on my desktop ...

    Bree. Thanks for the info.

At first I did have the option for the downloads ticked, but the download process took ages to complete and only downloaded about 20MB, if that.
So I tried a couple of more times to install, it very much quicker but still failed.

I have done as you advised and have now only got my Windows USB drive and my USB internet dongle connected.
Plus keyboard and mouse of course.

    I will now try again.

Well, I did as you suggested with the same result. I Googled the file STXII.SYS and found some interesting items concerning the ASUS Essence sound card and this file. This is the sound card that I use. So I uninstalled it. Then I disconnected from the internet because of the long time it takes to download nothing, and ran the install again. It all went in !Right now I am in the process of downloading what looks set to be about 600MB of updates. The download speed is ok too.Next, I will download a new driver for my sound card, but that will have to wait untill I have had some sleep. I have been awake since 7am Monday morning (UK)

It has all been a very interesting and worthwhile excercise. I can now do a clean install of windows and keep all files and progs.
That is VERY seriously worth knowing.

Also, is it OK to format a different USB drive to FAT, and copy my W10 install USB to it ?

    Thanks to all !

Yes, with a bit of preparation. For the copied USB to be bootable on UEFI and legacy BIOS systems you need to format to FAT32 and mark the partition as active. You can prepare a USB in this way by using DISKPART from an elevated command prompt. Make very sure that in DISKPART you select the correct disk before proceeding further. In this example Disk 1 is an 8GB USB drive. Your USB may appear as another disk number, use the LIST DISK command first to find out.

Code: C:\WINDOWS\system32> DISKPART Microsoft DiskPart version 10.0.15063.0 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. DISKPART> LIST DISK Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- --- Disk 0 Online 465 GB 0 B Disk 1 Online 7638 MB 0 B DISKPART> SELECT DISK 1 Disk 1 is now the selected disk. DISKPART> CLEAN DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk. DISKPART> CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY DiskPart succeeded in creating the specified partition. DISKPART> SELECT PARTITION 1 Partition 1 is now the selected partition. DISKPART> FORMAT FS=FAT32 QUICK DiskPart successfully formatted the volume. DISKPART> ACTIVE DiskPart marked the current partition as active. DISKPART>[/quote] Now just copy all the files and folders to your newly formatted USB.
