Windows 10: What is New in Excel for the web

Delighting our customers with faster, smoother, and richer experiences in Excel for the web is an uncompromised goal across our Excel team. Recently we shared how weâve continued to improve performance to make opening workbooks, navigating a workbook, and other interactions faster and smoother for you. Today weâre introducing several additional features to help you better navigate and manipulate your Excel files in a browser:

Easier worksheet navigation

Multiple range selection

Zoom in/out

Excel keyboard shortcuts by default

Version history

Regional settings

Easier worksheet navigation

When opening an Excel workbook with multiple worksheets, you can now jump directly to the worksheet you want. Simply click on the new All Sheets button in the lower left corner and then select your worksheet.

Multiple range selection

You can now select multiple ranges that are not adjacent to each other â and fill color or copy-and paste. Hold the Ctrl key while selecting as many ranges as you want. The example below shows how you can select two non-adjacent columns and apply conditional formatting.

Excel keyboard shortcuts by default

Excel for the web now supports your keyboard shortcuts by default. Keyboard shortcuts like Alt, Ctrl-1, Ctrl-Shift-A, etc., go to Excel and not your browser. To see the list of Excel keyboard shortcuts, click on the Help tab and select Keyboard Shortcuts â Override browser shortcuts is checked by default.

Zoom in/out

Excel for the web now supports many ways to zoom in/out. Zoom in to get a close-up view of your data or zoom out for an overview look of your worksheet:

Pinch/stretch to zoom on touch screen or trackpad

Ctrl + mouse wheel

Ctrl Alt +/- key

Click the +/- button

Select a predefined zoom level from 25% to 200% in the bottom right corner

Coming soon: Zoom button in the menu ribbon under the View tab!

Version history

You can now view and restore previous versions of your Excel file using version history. Track activities in the workbook by others collaborating with you and revert to a previous version if needed. Select File > Info > Version History

Regional settings

You can now change region settings in Excel for the web to set your date/time, number, and currency formats in a couple ways:

Select File > Options > Regional Format Settings, or

Select the Number Format drop down list > More Number Formatsâ¦

Microsoft announces public preview of Office Scripts in Excel on web

Today we are announcing the availability of a public preview of Office Scripts in Excel on the web. Office Scripts is a feature that enables users with all levels of Excel experience—from beginner users to those with advanced coding expertise—to record scripts and automate their tasks. Over the coming weeks, this preview will be rolling out to organizations with Office 365. Get started by opting into the preview within the Microsoft 365 admin center, and create new automations using the script recorder and editor functionality.

What is Office Scripts?

With Office Scripts, you can automate tasks and workflows easily, and eliminate the need for repetitive steps as you create and manage workbooks. When the preview is enabled within your Office 365 environment, you can start creating Office Scripts by clicking the Record Actions button in the Automate tab, record the actions desired, stop the recorder, and then save the script.  Once a script is created you have the capability to run the script manually on Excel workbooks you have access to. Because the script is saved to OneDrive for Business, they can be easily reused across workbooks.

Let’s see it in action:

Users with all levels of programming experience can get started with script creation. It uses modern, developer-friendly technologies such as JavaScript so these scripts can be easily customized with existing - or new and growing – developer skills. To edit your scripts, use a full TypeScript-based editor directly within Excel on the web to tailor the scripts you have recorded. Finally, administrators will be able to enforce governance policies around how Office scripts can run.

Office Scripts will empower you to easily automate tasks and processes, allowing you to manage tasks efficiently anytime and anywhere, including within Excel on the web. Get started with the preview of Office Scripts for Excel on the web – we look forward to your feedback.

How do I get Office Scripts?

Office Scripts will be rolling out over the next few weeks to Excel users who have Office 365 E3 and E5 licenses. Gradual roll outs allow us to gather feedback and ensure feature quality. During this initial preview, Office Scripts will only be available in Excel on the web, though we will look to bring Office Scripts to other Excel endpoints. Office Scripts will need to enabled through the admin center and will become visible in tenants as the feature rolls out. The feature can be enabled by following the steps below:

Go to admin center.

Select Settings > Services & add-ins and then choose Office Scripts from the list.

Check the “Let users automate their tasks in Office on the web” box in the Office Scripts panel and save changes.

Note: Office Scripts is not currently available in Internet Explorer.

Workbook Link support coming to Excel for the web

When collecting data from multiple workbooks, it’s often desirable to link directly to the data. Why? It provides a record of where the data was sourced and, if the data changes, you can easily refresh it. This has made Workbook Link support a highly requested feature for our web users. Today, we are excited to announce that Workbook Link support is beginning to roll out to Excel for the web.

This was previously only available in Excel for Windows and Excel for Mac, and is an important step on our journey to meeting one of our key goals: "Customers can use our web app for all their work and should never feel they need to fall back to the rich client". You can read more about our web investment strategy in Brian's recent post.

Creating a new Workbook Link

To create a new Workbook Link, follow these simple steps:

Open two workbooks in Excel for the web. They should be stored in either OneDrive or SharePoint.

In the source workbook, copy the range.

In the destination workbook, “paste links” via the right click menu or via paste special on the home tab.

You can also explicitly reference the workbook using the following reference pattern. ='https://domain/folder/[workbookName.xlsx]sheetName'!CellOrRangeAddress

Opening a workbook that contains Workbook Links

When you open a workbook that contains Workbook Links, you will see a yellow bar notifying you that the workbook is referencing external data.

Data Connection Warning

If you ignore or dismiss the bar, we will not update the links and instead keep the values from before. If you click the “Enable Content” button, Excel for the web will retrieve the values from all the linked workbooks.

Managing Workbook Links

To help you manage Workbook Links, we’ve added a new Workbook Links task pane. The task pane can be accessed by pressing the Workbook Links button on the Data tab or via the “Manage Workbook Links” button on the yellow bar above.

You can see the task pane below with its menus expanded below.

The task pane lists all your linked workbooks and provides you with information on the status of each of the linked workbooks. If the link could not be updated, the status will explain the cause. So that you can quickly spot issues, any workbook that cannot be updated will be bubbled to the top of the list.

At a global level you can take the following actions:
Refresh all: This triggers an immediate refresh of all linked workbooks.
Refresh links automatically: When enabled, this causes Excel to periodically check for updated values while you are in the workbook.
Break all links: This removes all the Workbook Links by replacing those formulas with their current values.

At a workbook level you can take the following actions:
Refresh workbook: This triggers an immediate refresh of that linked workbook.
Open workbook: This opens the linked workbook in another tab.
Break links: This removes links to that workbook by replacing those formulas with their values.
Find next link: This selects the next occurrence of a link to that linked workbook. (Great for quickly finding phantom links)

Workbook Links vs External Links

Direct links to external workbooks have historically been referred to simply as “External Links”. As we continue to add more external data sources to Excel, the term “External Links” has become ambiguous. To improve clarity going forward, we will use the term “Workbook Links” instead.

Windows version 1809 - excel displays new comment instead of insert comment

Did all of the steps you suggested and the drop down list still does not show "insert comment" HOWEVER when I select "new note" from the dropdown list, it works the same as "insert comment". I think the engineers changed the title. Also at the top
of the excel screen is a field "tell me what you want to do"; if you type in insert comment, the insert comment window comes up and looks exactly like the window when you select "new note". As you suggested, I will send feedback to the engineers. Thank
you for your help.
