Today at Build, weâre excited to show you all the new features and capabilities thatâll enhance and streamline the end-to-end app development experience for developers and provide an engaging experience with end users.

Streamlining app development

Having the right set of tools and workflows available for building apps is important to our developers. Weâre excited to announce some new tools, updates and capabilities to streamline app development.

Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code extension (preview)

With the new Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code extensions, you can use the power of these tools to build your Teams app quickly, with a simple interface that enables you to:

Build project scaffolding

Configure features

Create app package manifest and setup hosting

Validate app package

Start app publishing process (for yourself, to your organizationâs catalog, or to the Teams app store)

Available in public preview.

New Power Platform + Teams enhancements

Weâre excited to introduce several new features enhancing the Power Platform + Teams integrations that are either available or coming soon. These features enable you to build low-code/no-code experiences with custom apps, workflows, bots, and dashboards for your team and customers.

Simplified Power Apps and Power Virtual Agents Add to Teams button, streamlining the addition of custom solutions to the Teams app store.

Enhanced workflow automation with Power Automate + Teams with new triggers and actions built specifically for Teams to unlock custom message extensions, allow for automated @mentioning, and provide a customized bot experience. New business process scenario templates will also be rolled out to jump start automation development.

Improved Power BI sharing to Teams with a new Share to Teams button in Power BI to easily share Power BI reports. Youâll also be able to copy individual charts in a Power BI report to a Teams conversation and have the chat include a rich thumbnail preview of the chart, as well as an adaptive card allowing users to take actions on that chart.

Low-code bots brought to Teams, with Power Virtual Agents, making it easier to create and manage low-code chatbots for Teams, to provide a streamlined experience for end users.

App Studio Update (v1.4.0)

App Studio for Microsoft Teams makes it easy to start creating or integrating your own Teams apps by streamlining the creation of the manifest and package for your app. With the latest update (v1.4.0), weâve built some enhancements, including:

Support for app manifest schema 1.6.

An Advanced section in app details to easily support advanced features.

An app package validation tool to run tests that extend outside the basic schema validation. This is great for those looking to publish to Partner Center for pre-validation or having issues sideloading their app.

Better error handling via a bot framework connection with user guidance on how to perform the same actions in the bot framework web portal.

24 new granular permissions for the Teams Microsoft Graph APIs

These new APIs are available on the Microsoft Graph v1.0 endpoint and will give you more flexibility and granularity for app data access authorization. With granular permissions, developers and admins can now narrow the appâs access and scope to a specific teamâs set of data, as opposed to all team data.

Mobile device capability for apps

Coming soon this year, youâll be able to extend your appâs capabilities by connecting to native mobile device features, such as camera, location, and microphone. Seamlessly enable scenarios, such as having your bot support and manage expense reporting utilizing the mobile deviceâs camera.

New Microsoft Graph APIs in beta for subscribing to notifications for new app messages â in beta

Using the Microsoft Graph API, weâve provided you some new APIs in beta that will provide you the ability to create subscriptions for different event types, such as new/edited/deleted messages, replies, reactions, as well as to all or specific channels and chat threads â allowing your apps to refresh when new content is available. These are great for development of data loss prevention (DLP) and safety apps. For more information about these subscription APIs that are in beta, see Create subscription (beta).

Activity feed notifications for apps â coming soon to beta

The new activity feed notifications via the Microsoft Graph API gives you a new and simpler way to send app notifications to users across devices. Youâll enjoy the ability to customize and control the notification experience â everything from the notification structure, to what is surfaced to the user after they click the notification.

New Microsoft Graph APIs in v1.0 â coming soon

We have some new Microsoft Graph APIs for Teams coming to the v1.0 endpoint that youâll be able to explore soon.

Send channel messages API allows you to send channel messages and replies as well as include attachments.

primaryChannel API allows you to access to data without making assumptions about naming.

filesFolder API allows you to find the SharePoint folder for a channel without assuming the folder has the same name as the channel.

Shifts API enables a scheduling module in Teams to enable you to integrate existing or custom workforce management systems for scenarios such as auto-approvals for shift requests.

Seamless end-to-end app lifecycle experience

Building an app is just the beginning of the journey for app developers. A smooth process with business decision makers and IT admins is an essential part of that journey. Weâre excited to announce that, coming soon, developers and admins will enjoy a streamlined custom app submission process and enhanced app management capabilities within the Teams Admin Center â providing a connected experience through the development, publishing and end user discovery process.

Streamlined app submission workflows

You will soon be able to submit Teams apps through any of these clients and trusted sources (App Studio, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Power Apps, SharePoint Framework) via our App Submission Microsoft Graph API â streamlining the process of submitting apps directly to the Teams Admin Center for IT admins to review and approve.

New app management capabilities within the Teams Admin Center

Microsoft Teams provides a robust set of controls to help administrators confidently enable and manage apps in their Teams environment. Weâre excited to announce several new capabilities that will soon be added to our existing controls to manage Teams apps.

The new Manage Apps view in the Microsoft Teams Admin Center will show all apps in your tenants â including app certification, approval status, and licensing status.

A new third party subscription purchase experience will enable IT admins to view and purchase subscriptions associated with the 3rd party Teams apps. Admins can purchase licenses and later pin the app to targeted employees right from within the Teams Admin Portal.

IT admins can improve app discoverability and adoption by creating custom templates for users to choose from when creating a team. Templates can include pre-defined channels, tabs, and apps so users can hit the ground running in Teams. By packaging relevant apps inside templates, IT admins can effectively surface them to the right members of the organization. Templates in Teams will be available in the next few months.

Admins will be able to grant consent to Microsoft Graph API permissions on behalf of the entire tenant for the permissions an app is requesting, such as reading information stored in a team or sending an email on behalf of users. They will also be able to see granular permissions and provide resource-specific consent with the ability to install an app to a specific team.

Drive a deeper user engagement

Take advantage of Azure Active Directory Single Sign-On (SSO) to eliminate need for re-signing into Teams apps

End users will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of Azure Active Directory Single Sign-On (SSO) for supported Teams apps on both desktop and mobile. After theyâre signed into Teams, users wonât have to sign in again on apps that integrate with single sign-on for both desktop and mobile. Developers will also enjoy a simplified authentication process through a single API call. Weâll roll out with tabs in general availability soon, followed by bots later this year.

Azure Active Directory Conditional Access â coming soon

This capability will enable end users to run apps and tabs even if their IT admin has set up conditional access policies requiring the use of a trusted device. Website tabs on Windows that use Azure AD will automatically sign you in and support device-specific conditional access policies.

Resource-Specific Consent (RSC) â coming soon to preview

This capability will empower Team owners to install an app for their specific team and restrict the appâs scope and access to data to only that one team. This allows team owners to make decisions versus needing the global IT admin to provision access.

Experience attempting to access an app without RSC to having RSC enabled

Pop-out apps, channel tabs, and chat tabs â coming later this year

Coming soon this year, end users will be able to âpop-outâ personal apps and tabs* (channels and chats). Users will be able to open separate windows for their apps so they can work while easily accessing their team chats to continue to collaborate. Simply right-click on an app to see the option to pop out or visit a tab and find the pop-out icon in the top right.

*Not all tabs supported at time of launch

More powerful cards inside bots and connectors in Teams

Develop a richer and more customizable experience using Adaptive Cards 1.2 in Teams on desktop and mobile. Highly requested features such as @mentions support within cards, allow the ability to direct a userâs attention to cards that are relevant to them â providing you an enhanced notification and engagement capability for your app. RichText Blocks allow you greater flexibility in designing the look and feel of the cards. These are available in general availability and ready for you to explore today.

Messaging actions for mobile â coming soon

We are excited to announce that message action support for mobile will be coming soon to preview. Message actions can be triggered directly from a message and can be used to enable scenarios such as creating tasks or work items following a discussion within a chat or channel.

Personal apps available on mobile â coming soon for preview

Personal apps are Teams applications focusing on interactions with a single user, such as 1:1 Conversational bots or personal tabs. These types of apps are already available for desktop and web and will be available for mobile â coming soon for preview.

Microsoft Teams PWA preview available for Windows 10 S devices

Today at Build 2018, Microsoft Teams is announcing a range of new capabilities and integrations to build and manage tailored apps for your enterprise using the Teams developer platform. Extending the power of Office 365 and Microsoft Graph APIs, IT professionals can create, curate, and distribute an enterprise catalog of apps for Teams while automating team and channel management to fit your organization. Tailoring your teamwork is now even easier through new integrations and shared developer capabilities experiences with other Office 365 applications, including SharePoint and Outlook.

Build will continue the momentum developed in late March 2018 during Enterprise Connect, where Microsoft Teams celebrated its one-year anniversary and shared that over 200K organizations are using the platform. We also announced new capabilities coming to Teams later this year such as Cloud recording, Inline message translation, Background blur on video in meetings, Proximity detection for Teams meetings, Mobile sharing in meetings, and Cortana voice interactions for Teams-enabled devices, all supporting our vision for Intelligent Communications (check out the most recent updates for May)

At Build we are excited to announce the preview of the Teams app for the Microsoft Store. This release marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to support Progressive Web App (PWA) capabilities in Windows, using Edge based rendering and combining web technologies with native OS capabilities to deliver an innovative new experience. As a Store app, it is installed and managed through the Microsoft Store, supports the Narrator screen reader, and integrates with the Windows 10 Action Center. For Public Preview, the Teams Store app is only available for Windows 10 S / S-mode devices.

We continue to add new capabilities on a regular basis to make Teams an even more powerful hub for teamwork. For customers pushing the boundary of teamwork and mixed reality , learn more about the Microsoft Remote Assist announcement from earlier today at Build.

This week at the conference, we’ll be focusing on opportunities in four areas to “do more” with tailored Teams apps:

Get Started – Today you can use tabs to bring content into conversations, check out the following features that provide you more control over your content

Apps in Chat—coming soon to developer Preview, you can now update your app so that it can be used in private 1:1 and group chats. Your users can add a tab or chat with a bot in their private chats to light up new collaboration and sharing scenarios.

SharePoint pages in Teams—SharePoint is now even more deeply integrated into Teams—with the latest integration you can pin a SharePoint page in your channels to enable deeper collaboration around sites and other SharePoint content, and get the full power of the SharePoint app platform within Teams.

Teams App Studio – debuted in January in preview, Teams App Studio streamlines and automates the development process for creating Microsoft Teams apps by helping you to define your app’s manifest through simple forms, In the next few months Teams App Studio will be able to save your app manifest in the cloud and provide in-app registration with Microsoft Bot Framework.

Enhance Conversations – Today you can use Azure bot services for natural language interaction and provide structured commands through messaging extensions, check out these new features to enhance conversations

Adaptive card support—coming soon to developer Preview, you can now send rich Adaptive cards from your bot, connector, or messaging extension. Adaptive cards allow you to send more flexible content in conversations and are supported on other Microsoft platforms such as Outlook, Windows, and Cortana.

Files support for bots—coming soon to developer Preview, your bot can now send and receive files in 1:1 chats with users. Enable content and document scenarios such as expense reports, file management, and image processing.

Distribute and manage your teams and apps – Make your apps available to users with the right controls. Check out the following new features to customize your teams within the enterprise

Tailored Teams created through the New Teams APIs in Microsoft Graph—use enhanced Microsoft Graph APIs to programmatically manage Teams resources and content including teams, channels, and conversations. We will be releasing the following APIs from preview to General Availability this summer: creating and deleting teams and channels; adding and remove team members and owners; and updating team and channel properties.

Enterprise app sharing through Teams enterprise catalog for apps - control access to custom Teams apps and distribute apps to users within the organizations by publishing to your company’s catalog in the Teams app store. Manage the catalog via PowerShell cmdlets, Graph APIs, and even through the Teams client itself.

What is New in Microsoft Teams for January 2020

Happy new year! Our resolution at Microsoft Teams is to keep delivering a delightful experience to our customers

. We started the year at National Retail Federation (NRF), where Teams continued to shine as a platform with tailored capabilities to connect everyone in your company, from the C-suite to the firstline. Check out 10 ways shift workers can use Teams here.

What’s New: Chat & Collaboration

Improve communication transparency with read receipts

Do you often wonder if your teammates saw the message you sent them? Read receipts in private chats allow senders to know when their message was read by the recipient. Read receipts are powerful, because they also allow the recipient to communicate implicitly that they are not ignoring the sender, they may just be busy and haven’t gotten a chance to read their message. Read receipts can be a great tool but may not be for everyone – learn more about turning them on and off here.

The “Colleague joined Teams” notification lets you know who is new to Teams

Welcome to the team! You can now connect with new team members faster and welcome them to the team. You will receive a notification in your activity feed when a new colleague joins Teams for the first time. Send them a GIF to say hello!

What’s New: Meetings & Calling

Voice Administration— New workload in the Teams Admin Center

As a part of our ongoing process to provide IT admins more visibility into additional workloads, Voice Administration has been added as a workload in the Teams Admin Center. This means that Microsoft Calling Plan customers will be able to search, acquire, and assign phone numbers to users. Admins will also be able to set the emergency addresses for those end-users. Additionally, customers will be able to create / test / manage custom dial plans, configure Dynamic Emergency Calling, and use improved configuration for Auto Attendants and Call Queues.

ThinkSmart View joins Microsoft Teams phones

Welcome to the family! Lenovo announced new additions to its ThinkSmart portfolio, designed to transform business communications. ThinkSmart View allows users to manage their audio and video calls through a dedicated desktop device. Users can simply join meetings with one-touch and use the device in portrait or landscape layout to suit their preference. For security, the device has a camera shutter and a microphone mute switch. These will become available for customers in March 2020. Learn more here.

Poly announces the CCX range of Teams phones

Meet the Poly CCX Series, a range of native Teams phones to helps users to transform the way they communicate. The series offers a range models to choose from, starting with the CCX400 and up to the CCX600. Allowing you to personalize yours with a headset that suits your style, or the traditional handset. What’s New: Admin

Microsoft Teams will be installed with Office 365 ProPlus for customers on the semi-annual channel

We are continuing to make it easier for our customers to access Teams on their desktop. The desktop Teams client will be downloaded by default for existing users with Office 365 ProPlus, Microsoft 365 Business, and Microsoft 365 Business Premium apps for customers on the semi-annual channel. With this change your users will no longer need to do a separate installation of Microsoft Teams. What’s New: Security & Compliance

Safe Links is now available in Teams protect you from malicious URLs

Keeping users safe is our highest priority. Office 365 ATP Safe Links help protect users from accidental or malicious unsafe links by providing time-of-click verification of web addresses (URLs) in email messages and Office documents. The power of Safe Links is now available to protect users from malicious links sent via Microsoft Teams.

What’s New: Developers

Cloud Communications APIs are now available

The last piece of the puzzle is here! The last API to enable partners to develop contact solutions is now available. This month the MS Graph Cloud Communications APIs became available, enabling calling + online meetings capabilities. The full package now includes:

What’s New: Teams for Education

Learn more about student performance with Class Insights

We’re so excited to introduce Class Insights, a new experience for educators that will help them gain insight into student performance. Educators can add the new Class Insights tab to their class team and see average grades, on-time assignments, average return time, and conversation activity for their class over time. Class Insights gives teachers a single view to observe individual student and class performance.

With this student data right at your fingertips, your school will be able to make even more informed decisions about curriculum, pacing, and student engagement. For more information on Class Insights, click here!

What’s New: GCC

Website Tab in GCC High and DOD

Users in the GCC High and DOD tenants can now add a website tab in Teams. Leveraging this tab, users will have the ability to pin URLs as well as SharePoint links etc. for easy access to their content. By default, this feature is released as “turned off”. Please work with your IT admin to begin using the feature.

3rd Party Apps In GCC

GCC customers can now use 3rd party apps in Microsoft Teams - check out the library to see if apps you already use and love are available to integrate. Note that by default, access to 3rd party apps is turned off. In addition, apps need to be vetted for regulatory, security and policy compliance by your organization before they can be enabled for users to access. Please work with your IT admin to make your preferred apps available for use. Learn more here.
