While the holiday season has come and gone, the new year brings a renewed opportunity for reflection, goal-setting and personal growth. The start of the new year makes me appreciate our teamâs progress and Iâve got to tell you, thereâs a lot of great stuff coming in 2021! This month marks the one-year birthday of the new Microsoft Edge and to celebrate this milestone, youâll see some beautiful new designs and visual themes so you can customize Microsoft Edge to reflect your unique personality. Thanks for your feedback and continued support over the last year!

Over the holidays, I hope youâve had a chance to experience why Microsoft Edge is the best browser for shopping with built-in coupons, the ability to compare prices, gift suggestions in Bing and more. Iâve heard from friends and family how Microsoft Edge helped save time and money this holiday season, and I couldnât be happier . We plan to bring more shopping features to Microsoft Edge and Bing in the coming months so keep the feedback coming! You most likely already have Microsoft Edge installed, so launch it and check it out. If youâre on a Mac or mobile device, download it and let us know what you think!

Today, Iâm excited to announce several features that help you start your new year off right. Hereâs whatâs new this month in Web Experiences and some of my New Year resolutions:

Resolution 1: Make the most of your time online in 2021

Research online and stay in the flow with sidebar search in Microsoft Edge

Great for looking up unfamiliar words for school, recipes, or even that obscure toy your niece requested for her birthday, sidebar search is now generally available in Microsoft Edge. While browsing web pages, simply highlight a word, right click and search. A side panel will open with search results so you can get quick answers without having to navigate away from your current page. I love this one because it helps me stay focused and I can easily get back to where I left off without opening a new tab. Itâs also great for reading up on topics I might not be familiar with or going deep on research.

Stay up to date on your Outlook email right from the Microsoft Edge new tab page

I multitask a lot in my browser and always keep an eye on my inbox to stay productive. This month, youâll start to see incoming emails directly from the new tab page of Microsoft Edge. With the new smart tile for Outlook, you can see your three most recent emails and also start a new email or meeting request in Outlook, directly from the new tab page. To get started, open a new tab page and click the plus sign beside your current quick links. Under suggestions, click Outlook. Youâll need to sign in to Microsoft Edge with the same account you use for Outlook to enable this feature, and it will help make your life easier by consolidating your workstreams. History and tab sync keeps your latest information at your fingertips

Moving between devices is getting even easier with this release. Now you can sync your history and tabs, in addition to favorites, passwords and autofill information. This is now available on desktop and mobile to all customers who are signed in with the same profile. To enable history and open tabs sync, go to the Edge settings < profiles < sync and turn on the toggles. You can view your history and open tabs by selecting the âhistoryâ option from the menu, or by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL + H.

Automatic profile switching comes to macOS

One of our most loved features, called Automatic Profile Switching, makes its way to macOS this month. I like to keep my work browsing and personal browsing activities separate, and profile switching makes it so easy. Now macOS provides the ability to switch sites that authenticate with a userâs work profile so itâs easier to toggle between work and personal browsing. To get started, check with your local admin if automatic profile switch is enabled for your organization. If so, sign in with your Microsoft personal and work accounts and youâre ready to go.

Resolution 2: New year, new look. Express yourself in 2021

Reflect your personality and make Microsoft Edge your own with exclusive themes

Browsers act as portals to our online world. Since a majority of time spent online is through a browser, they are part of how we think about and experience the web each day â and now you can make Microsoft Edge your own with themes. For our 1-year anniversary, Iâm excited to share weâve created 24 new themes so now you have more ways to personalize your browser, with more coming over time. Weâve also partnered with Xbox to offer themes from your favorite franchises, including Halo, Gears, Forza, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and more. Read more about our new themes.

Browse our new library of themes on the site and install to get started. The hardest part is choosing only one. Fortunately, you can use different themes for different accounts. I chose one for my personal and another theme for my work account, which makes it even easier for me to keep the two separate. And if you donât find one you want, you can also install themes from other stores, including the Chrome Web Store.

Icons in Microsoft Edge get a fresh face

For the new year, Iâm also excited to share that Microsoft Edge is now incorporating elements of the Fluent design system, starting with our icons in the browser interface. In our latest release youâll notice subtle updates to icons in Microsoft Edge that are rounder and softer in appearance. They are built from a consistent key-line and grid which allows for more visual consistency when scanning menus, lists, etc. This is just the beginning of our design journey and weâre already imagining how to bring Fluent design throughout our products. We canât wait to share more of our vision in the near future.

Resolution 3: Achieve your personal goals this year

Get a fresh start and find a new job with Microsoft Bing

Last year was hard for many of us around the world. As the pandemic drudges on, the joblessness rate continues to rise. So, we wanted to deliver a way to make job searches faster, easier and more comprehensive for you. By aggregating job openings from different sources across the web and providing powerful filtering capabilities, the Microsoft Bing job results let you quickly browse and find jobs relevant to your employment needs and qualifications.

To try it out, you can search for âjobs hiring near me,â or if relevant, search for more specific roles or companies. With the job openings that are returned, you can filter as needed by job types, annual salary, location and more. Clicking âsee more listingsâ will take you to our full-page job search portal, which layers in additional information like full-length job description, as well as deeper filtering capabilities and a more comprehensive list of job openings for you to browse, so you can do a more in-depth search if youâd like.

Whether you are looking to land your first job or thinking about a career switch, our new job search experience on Microsoft Bing takes some of the pain out of what usually is a lengthy task.

Get quick resources for your wellness goals with Microsoft Bing

In the new year, like many people, I set resolutions to keep my mind and body healthy. The last thing I want to be doing for these resolutions is to spend a lot of time and stress finding helpful resources. To help with that, Microsoft Bing has released visually rich, summarized information right on the search results page.

For example, a search for âyoga posesâ shows a carousel with playable videos showing different poses that I can quickly sort by level of difficulty, body target area and skills I want to focus on. A search for âMediterranean dietâ shows summarized results pulling together the summary of the diet, foods to eat and avoid, a daily eating plan and more. And, if I donât know what things I want to try, I can search for something more general like âhow to deal with stress,â and quickly get an aggregated view of things I can try for relief, general coping habits, and some common causes for stress I can look out for in my life.

To get started, search the queries listed above, or whatever wellness-related topics that are top of mind for you!

Make more than sourdough bread in 2021 with recipes on Microsoft Bing

If youâre like me, youâre probably tired of cooking the same things and want to quickly get some fresh culinary inspiration. Youâre probably also tired of spending time browsing a bunch of individual blogs and sites where the recipes themselves are buried beneath text and ads. Thatâs why weâre excited about our new Microsoft Bing recipes features that help you quickly find a recipe that suits your needs.

For example, search for âhealthy veggie recipeâ and youâll get a collage of images that show you what each dish looks like, along with aggregated reviews and nutrition info. Click on any dishes that catch your eye, and youâll get a high-level summary of ingredients needed, possible substitutions, and an option to scale the recipe up or down by number of desired servings, so you can see at a glance if a recipe is right for you. You can watch any available videos for a recipe inline to learn more about how to get started, or click through to the site for full preparation instructions.

Microsoft Edge and Bing place the worldâs information at your fingertips. Whether youâre a student working on a project, or just curious, we want to help you quickly find what youâre looking for so you donât have to wade through lots of pages. Thatâs why weâve released knowledge cards on Microsoft Bing that provide quick, easy and visually rich summaries of popular topics, aggregated from multiple sources, to help keep your search easy and fun. You can currently see our knowledge cards on topics like animals and a few other topics, with more coming soon!

Resolution 4: Maximize your computerâs performance this year

Sleeping tabs improves browser and system performance

If youâre like me, you have about a dozen tabs open at once to quickly access the information you need. Having too many tabs open can slow down your system and clog up computer resources. Well weâve solved that to make your life easier as you browse. Microsoft Edge now has a sleeping tabs feature that boosts browser performance by improving memory and CPU resource usage, rolling out now. When you have several tabs open, it will release system resources for inactive tabs to help power new or existing tabs as well as other applications, preventing slowdowns and sluggishness. To get started, enable the sleeping tabs option in the browser settings menu. I just wish my kids would go to sleep by themselves at night.

Resolution 5: Be prepared for whatever comes your way

Be prepared for anything mother nature throws your way with Microsoft Weather

Weather forecasts are often unreliable since most weather services are based on century-old methods with limited accuracy that arenât sensitive to topography â it could be sunny in one location but just a few miles away it could be raining buckets. At Microsoft, our goal is to deliver the most accurate weather forecasts to our users. This month, weâre excited to announce the launch of the Winter Storm Center that will enable our users to plan better for the winter season. First and foremost, we use a state-of-the-art neural weather model that applies deep learning on radar images and other spatial, temporal data to predict rain or snow at a hyper-local resolution of 1 km and at an accuracy and scale not possible by existing weather providers. In addition, we are delivering these forecasts in a new immersive weather map experience which enables our users to know not only when a snowstorm is going to hit hardest at their specific location but also follow weather advisories and local weather news in one place. Resolution 6: Strengthen online security for you and your family

Anyone who knows me knows I love to shop. I admit I did quite a lot of it over the holidays using Microsoft Edge and thankfully saved some money with our built-in capability that searches for potential coupons. But have you ever been a victim of identity theft or had one of your online accounts hacked? Since the start of the pandemic, data breaches have been on the rise as people use their computers more than ever before to shop, bank and surf the web. This month, we are announcing password generator to help keep you and your family safer online. With password generator, Microsoft Edge will automatically suggest a secure password when youâre changing an existing password or signing up for a new online account, automatically saving it to your browser autofill settings. Again, such a simple, easy solution that makes me feel SO much better about browsing the web. To get started, make sure you have Microsoft account sign and sync enabled in Microsoft Edge. And along with tracking prevention, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, and Password monitor rolling out soon, Microsoft Edge has got your back. For information regarding enabling Windows 10, version 1909 features, please see Windows 10, version 1909 delivery options. Note that Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. They will also share the same security update KBs.

What is New in Microsoft Edge Web Experiences for August 2020

What’s New in Web Experiences for August 2020: Collections gets smarter, Microsoft Edge Family Safety comes to Android, and Bing helps you give back to local schools

It’s crazy how little our browsers have evolved over the past decade.

Today – at the click of a button – you can find AI as a service automating your online experience, or collaborate on projects across the globe with real-time video chat including translations, or you can comparison shop the latest trends and have the best prices and latest coupons automatically pop up in context. Also, we all are savvier these days about things like data privacy, online safety, and the challenges of keeping families and kids safe online. So why have browsers not kept up with all this innovation?

Our Edge team is on a mission to redefine the way people browse the web. We believe we should expect more from our web browser. Since the new Microsoft Edge launched in January, we’ve been continually adding new features and we’d like to share regular updates from the team as we create and build new web experiences for Microsoft Edge, Bing and MSN. So welcome to our first What’s New in Web Experiences blog! We plan to publish this every six weeks, aligned with our Edge stable releases, to share the latest and greatest innovations from the team. If you haven’t tried the new Microsoft Edge, download it and let us know what you think!

Our new reality has some of us getting ready for back-to-school, or should I say, back to learning-from-home. Families around the world (including mine!) are feeling the stress. Whether you are still working-from-home, learning-from-home, or trying to manage to stay safe and socially distanced at your job, it feels like there is never enough time in the day to get it all done. To help ease the burden, this month our team is introducing several new features and enhancements that help you save time, keep your family safe, and bring your family together to stay entertained and engaged at home. Here are some of my favorites:

Collections adds “Send to OneNote” and is now also available on mobile (iOS and Android)

Collections is one of my favorite Microsoft Edge features, helping me collect, organize and share content I find across the web. It’s ideal for organizing my online research and automatically turning my saved pages into a Word document. I’ve used Collections when researching road trips, saving favorite destinations I found across the web, and then seamlessly exporting that into a beautiful itinerary that I shared with my family. I’ve also used it to track prices of things my kids say they need “for school,” automatically exporting the lists into a simple spreadsheet for comparison shopping and to ensure I get the best deal. Even my son has found Collections to be useful for tracking and saving all his favorite Minecraft websites.

This month we will release a feature we’ve named: “Collections send to OneNote.” Now you can send your collections in Microsoft Edge to OneNote in addition to Word and Excel. When you send your collections to OneNote, all your collected content retains the web formatting, so you get visual links and all your notes organized neatly. And if you missed the news, Collections is also now available on mobile so you can sync across your devices!

Help keep your family safer when they surf the web across devices with Microsoft Edge – now on Android

Online safety is super important to me these days. With my kids spending so much time at home and on their devices, I want to know they are staying safer online. By creating a family group and using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10, Xbox One and now on Android, I have more visibility into their web habits with content filters and activity reports. This gives me peace of mind, helping them stay safe while exploring the web across any device. When your kid signs into Microsoft Edge on Android as a member of a family group, you now get the same protection as you do on Windows 10 and Xbox One:

Get activity reports on what websites your kids visit and the search terms they enter on their phone or tablet. Visit family.microsoft.com to see these activity reports, or use the Microsoft Family Safety app on your phone.

Create customizable lists of allowed and blocked sites, so you can control the content your kids see in Microsoft Edge. Kids can also ask you for permission to view a site directly from Microsoft Edge.

Have peace of mind since Bing SafeSearch is automatically set to Strict for maximum protection and content filtering. Microsoft Edge also automatically blocks certain adult websites to help protect your kids from mature content.

Have full control knowing sign out in Microsoft Edge is only granted by the organizer, and InPrivate browsing is automatically blocked to help your kids stay safer while they use Microsoft Edge.

Here’s how to get started:

Create your own family group at family.microsoft.com. Visit What is a Microsoft family group? to learn more about Microsoft family groups.

With Microsoft Edge on Android, sign into the Edge app with your child’s account. For Windows 10 or Xbox One, sign into the device with your child’s account.

After your child signs in on your Family account, depending on your family safety settings, Microsoft Edge will help protect your child with web filtering or activity reporting. Go to family.microsoft.com or use the Family Safety app on your phone to personalize your family safety settings and review your child’s web activity history. Family features will now be activated on the device you just signed into.

Your kid will automatically have certain unsafe sites blocked, InPrivate browsing blocked, and Bing SafeSearch set to Strict. Visit family.microsoft.com or use the Microsoft Family Safety app to turn on activity reporting and to customize your list of blocked sites.

View visual definitions with Picture Dictionary across the web using the Edge Immersive Reader

We are very excited to bring Picture Dictionary to Immersive Reader in Microsoft Edge this month to help students better understand unfamiliar words on a webpage. Picture Dictionary provides a picture representation of a word on any webpage to help increase comprehension. Ideal for those learning another language or for students learning on their own, it helps you stay in the flow of what you are reading. You’ll be able to simply click the word on a webpage and see a picture that represents the word. To get started, turn Picture Dictionary on by navigating to Reading Preferences and using the toggle.

Built-in PDF reader adds highlight and screen reader support

Many of us are working or doing schoolwork from home and finding ourselves reading a lot of PDF documents. When opening a PDF in Microsoft Edge, we’ve now added the highlighter tool to the PDF toolbar. This is ideal for students as they head back to school and find themselves researching for book reports. I also use it at work to keep organized and to save time as the team collaborates on whitepapers and marketing plans. To get started, select Highlight from the toolbar and use your cursor to select the text you want to highlight. There are five different colors to choose from to help you stay organized, and we are happy to say that PDF reader now also supports screen readers as well.

Sync is ready for back to school!

With many districts opting to start the school year online, we know our teachers and students will be using the browser… a lot. And just like work from home, “learn from home” can be a fluid experience, with family members sharing devices while trying to balance it all. Students need access to saved passwords, extensions and favorites, regardless of the device they are using. To make sure students have what they need as they navigate online learning, Microsoft Edge is expanding support for encrypted sync to additional Microsoft 365 educational accounts. Now students, teachers and the staff that support them can securely sync and access all of their favorites, passwords, extensions and even collections just by being signed into Microsoft Edge with their Azure Active Directory school account.

Math made easy with chatbot in Microsoft Teams, powered by Bing

This fall, with so many kids learning from home, we’re happy to announce the Microsoft Math Extension in Teams, powered by Bing. This helps students learn on their own by interacting with a chatbot to solve complex math problems. It works by entering math problems in the form of photos, drawings, or typed numbers into Microsoft Teams, and magic! You get a response with step by step solutions and rich learning content – all of which is powered by Bing. This saves time and helps facilitate online classrooms by making online math related conversations between students and teachers easier.

Support local schools. Give with Bing.

We’ve also been hard at work on Bing to deliver experiences that help our users during these tumultuous times. School districts, teacher associations and PTAs around the country are trying to adapt to our post-COVID-19 realities. To that end, we’ve integrated parent teacher associations (PTA) into Give with Bing so the points you earn for searching on Bing can be seamlessly donated to the PTA of your choice. Simply join Microsoft Rewards to start giving with Bing and select your PTA from the catalogue of nonprofits.

Bing search results now help you shop locally

We’ve also added new Bing features that help when you’re shopping. We recognize you may prefer to shop in person instead of online to support local businesses, or if you need to find an item that same day and want to buy it in person. So, we’ve added the “available nearby” filter to our Shopping tab, and when you search for a product on the main search result page, we show a map of nearby stores with a “sold here” tag for the item you’re looking for.

Microsoft News saves you time and keeps you informed with Live Tiles, video hub and weather cards

I’ve been following the news pretty closely these days and it’s tough keeping up with everything happening in the world. This month, we’re excited to share more features in the Microsoft News App on Windows 10 that save you time and keep you informed. Thanks to your feedback, these latest updates let you easily follow your interests, find videos and – the most important daily habit of all (especially if you live in Seattle or Amsterdam) – check the weather.

Access the latest news right from your Windows start menu with the new Microsoft News Live Tile. You can also now pin news topics that matter to you, like the latest on the space launch.

Within the app, find videos in one place in the new Video Hub experience, accessible via the side navigation pane. You can browse through many categories and create a watchlist by added any video to your queue.

Always be prepared: Pin the new Weather card to the “My News” feed in the app so you can track the forecast in your area or chosen location.

Now in limited preview (beta) is the Compact Stories view, which lets you take in headline news, top stories and trending topics at a glance.

Get hyped for the upcoming theatrical release of “WONDER WOMAN 1984”

And now for a bit of fun for all of you Wonder Woman fans. This month we are excited to announce Microsoft has partnered with “WONDER WOMAN 1984” to release a coding challenge that invites fans to help Wonder Woman recover her sword and shield from a hidden vault that can only be opened with a collection of codes scattered across the internet unlocked by problem solving and digital skills. As part of this, we created a new browser extension inspired by the upcoming theatrical release, giving you the chance to apply one of several images inspired by the movie to the Microsoft Edge new tab page. Closer to the theatrical release, we will be launching a new browser theme available for Microsoft Edge, so get hyped for all the action.

New features and improvements coming with Windows 10 Creators Update

The introduction of Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 was an important step towards delivering a browser that not only gives users better performance, battery life, and security, but also a browser that keeps up with the ever-changing demands of digital living.

Today, we’re excited to dive deeper into the features and improvements you’ll see within Microsoft Edge in the Windows 10 Creators Update, as well as provide a peek into how and why they came to be.

Keeping your web organized

As you may have seen earlier this month, we’ve released a set of tab management features to the Windows Insider Program that we designed specifically to address major points of anxiety for users – the chaos and clutter of the web and the fear of losing tabs.

Our research tells us that Windows users spend more than 50% of their time on the web, but are often derailed by the arduous task of having to sift through countless search results, sites, and the sheer volume of unfamiliar content online. Most of us endeavor to be masters of multi-tasking, but not all the technology we use is built to support our complex day-to-day digital habits. Thus, people often have many tabs open at any given time – resulting in stress about losing open tabs, not being able to pick up where they left off, or simply losing focus due to information overload.

With these new tab management features, users can preview visual thumbnails of all their open tabs at a glance, and set a group of tabs aside in an instant to get a fresh start, removing any distractions and providing a clean browser feel, while remaining confident that they can pick up right where they left off. We want to enable users to quickly jump from one task to another without losing focus, and help them stay immersed in the content that matters to them at that moment.

Bringing more to the browser and the browser to more

In addition to new features that help you navigate and organize the web, we are also in the early stages of bringing new and expanded experiences into Microsoft Edge – and Microsoft Edge into new experiences beyond the confines of your screen.

Embracing 3D: Over the coming years virtual and mixed reality will change the way we interact with technology. A wave of new devices will offer users truly unique immersive experiences in ways 2D cannot. A small but growing number of web sites are offering virtual reality experiences that let users view and interact with virtual worlds firsthand. Microsoft Edge is at the forefront of this work by enabling support for WebVR so users can experience virtual reality via the web using VR devices and upcoming Windows Mixed Reality hardware. We continue to explore how 3D content can revolutionize the web, and we’re hard at work in standards bodies to deliver a new interoperable immersive web. These are exciting times, and we’re thrilled to participate.

Books come to the browser: A few weeks ago, we began testing the ability to purchase e-books directly from the Windows Store and read them in Microsoft Edge. We’ve designed the browser with tools built specifically to improve the reading experience on Windows 10 devices, with features that not only enable you to read content, but also to customize and create your own experience with custom font sizes, layouts, themes, navigation control, Cortana integration and more. Rolling out Books in the Windows Store and Microsoft Edge is the first of many steps towards empowering entrepreneurs, students, creators, educators and others to learn and achieve more.

Online shopping gets even easier: Late last year we introduced a preview implementation of the Payment Request API for Microsoft Edge, which will work with Microsoft Wallet on Windows 10 PCs to make online shopping easier than ever. On participating web sites, users will have the option to checkout quickly using their payment information stored securely in Microsoft Wallet so they don’t have to navigate through traditional checkout flows and repeatedly enter the same payment and shipping address information.

Continued expansion of extension platform We’ve continued our investment in the Microsoft Edge Extensions ecosystem and platform. Extension developers now have access to over 30% more APIs than our initial release, including access to favorites, roaming data between PCs, and the ability to securely communicate with other installed applications. We helped make developers more productive with updates to the Microsoft Edge Extension Toolkit to help with porting, as well as improvements to extensions debugging and interoperability. We continue to work closely with partners to help them release extensions that meet our shared quality and performance goals and have been delighted to welcome several new partners to the Microsoft Edge Extensions collection in the Windows Store in the past months, such as Ebates, Intel TrueKey, Read & Write, Ghostery, and RoboForm, with many more in the pipeline to come.

Faster, safer, and more efficient than ever: As we know, making a better browser is more than just adding new features—it also means refining the ones you use every day to be better than ever. Microsoft Edge already has class-leading efficiency, performance, and security, but we’re not satisfied to stop there! In the Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft Edge will be even faster and more responsive on your favorite sites, will get even more out of your battery than today’s industry-leading efficiency, and will introduce powerful new defenses to keep you safe on the web. We’re never done making Microsoft Edge leaner and more powerful, and we look forward to sharing more about these enhancements soon.
