How to factory reset Cisco 1700 Router

Hopefully I can help you here....its a very common thing to happen.


First, I take it you dont know the passwords for console access or telnet/ssh?

I will assume that these devices belong to you.

step 1. Plug a cisco console cable into a serial port on your pc
step 2. Plug other end into Cisco console port
step 3. Using hyperterm or putty or similar connect to the serial port
step 4. boot router, and make sure you clearly can see the output (this confirms you have good serial comms)
step 5. if this fails, adjust the comm port settings (9600, 8,1,n are the default)
step 6. now you have to do the only hard part...send the break command:

Break command list: Break Commands

Go down the list and match your OS and SW and try the sequence suggested.

If this fails several times do what I do: Install putty (free) and then to send a break so you can get into rommom just hit "ctrl-a b".

Thanks to the comment from djsmiley2k that brought me to the right track!

I'ld like to explain what was wrong in my case (as it's not that obvious in the first place, I think), so it might help others.

1. After logging in I started a Putty session from inside WinSCP.
   
2. I waited the specified time and after 60 seconds the WinSCP-session got disconnected.
   
3. However, my Putty session was still working.
   
4. Right click on the Putty terminal window --> Change Settings --> Connection
   
5. I now noticed that there's a value of 30s set for Seconds between keepalives.
   
6. After manually setting this to 0, I got disconnected after the defined timeframe as expected.
   
7. However, when reconnecting the same behaviour occured again.

To fix this behaviour:

1. Open Putty (outside of WinSCP).
   
2. Load the special session WinSCP temporary session
   
3. Go to Connection
   
4. Check that the keepalives-value is set to 0.
   
5. Go back to Session
   
6. Save the configuration under the same name as your Session name in
   WinSCP.
   
7. Now try again and you should find out both the WinSCP and the Putty connection are terminated as expected.
