when 2.5" hard drive is more compacted and nice why there are still 3.5" hard drive, what is the reason of using 3.5" instead of 2.5" nowadays. Does 3.5" have longer average lifespan?

BSOD when plugging in a usb SSD

I recently got a USB 3.0 SATA hard drive docking station that supports both 3.5" drives and 2.5" drives. I used a 3.5" 1TB hard drive and it works great, however whenever i plug in a 120GB Kingston SSD. I get the BSOD and it says 'Page fault in nonpaged
area (NTFS.sys)'. The reason I want to connect this SSD is because it has a broken version of windows on it and i am going to attempt to fix it.

    More here about that error:
How to: Troubleshoot common Setup and Stop Errors during Windows - Microsoft Community

You can bypass Get Windows 10 app in the System Tray to Install Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help.
This is working for almost all failures of GWX.

Tick the checkbox in first option to automate the process, or select "For another PC" to create bootable flash media or download an ISO to burn to DVD with Windows Image Burner. Now you have media for reinstalls or needed repairs. But to run the
Upgrade it must be opened in Windows 7/8.1, right click Setup file to Run as Admin.

To improve the Upgrade's chances turn off everything at Startup:

In Windows 7, type msconfig in Start Search Box, uncheck everything on Startup and Services tabs,
after Hiding all MS Services. Apply, restart.

In Windows 8.1, right click Task Bar to open Task Manager, disable everything in Startup Tab, Apply, Reboot.

Uninstall any anti-virus except Defender. Bloated AV's like Norton, MacAfee, AVG and Avast need to have special
Uninstallers (removal tools) for common antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase.

Stick with built-in Defender in Windows 10 for best performance and adequate protection. If you get infected add the inexpensive Real Time protection from the best-in-class free malware scanner
Malwarebytes . I'd also periodically scan with
    SUPERAntiSpyware
or the more powerful AdwCleaner, also best-in-class and free.

Immediately after install, type Update in Start Search box to Check for Updates, expedite these through requested restart, then check again until no more are offered. Next right click Start button to open Device Manager, import any drivers still missing
from the PC or Device's Support Downloads webpage. How to: Install and
Update drivers in Windows 10 - Microsoft Community

It’s highly recommended to save a backup System Image of your existing OS before upgrading, which can be recovered using the Windows disk, Repair CD or Recovery flash drive in 20 minutes. Type Backup in Start Search box, in Backup and Recovery Center
choose Create a System Image. You can also use a more flexible imaging program like free
    Macrium Imaging.

Feel free to ask back any questions and keep us posted on how it goes.

what is the usefulness of 3.5" hard drive?

2,5" hard drives tend to spin at slower rates = slower.

It stems from the history of hard drives. Originally main stream hard drives were 5.25 inch, then reduced in size to 3.5 inch. 2.5 inch never really took hold in desktop computers but are mainly used in laptops. You don't get the same capacities in 2.5 either.

3½ inch drives were the original standard for use in the PC as that was the size of the standard Disk Bay set by the use 5¼ inch floppy disk and then the use of CD and DVD and eventually Blu-Ray media.

It's a good size as it tends to be more easily naturally cooled. (although I find that forced fan cooling of the drive bays in a desktop can help cool the whole enclosure, especially in Server applications)

The 2½ inch package was originally used to fit into the 3½ inch floppy drive bays and I can remember Laptops with a user swappable floppy drive/ HDD/CD /DVD Drive bay. The 2½ drives were used for space saving for use in Laptops but have always been liable to run hotter than the 3½ and thus have a shorter life, the size also allows the 3½ drive to run faster so improving data transfer and the larger platter diameter also allows greater data density and thus higher capacities.

Modern drives are using the 2½ inch package size as they are starting to default to digital not mechanical methods of storage, which does not have so much of a Heat issue.

The 2½ inch standard SSD package is of course now being superseded with new package types such as the M2 which is more like a Memory module than the SSD which still retains the old case format (2½ Inch)

There were 5.25 inch drives back in the day though, aka Quantum Bigfoot.

what is the usefulness of 3.5" hard drive?

There have been many different disk sizes used over the years in Mainframes and also during the early days of the PC some larger sizes are still used in specialist sizes

I have seen a platter several feet in diameter so limits are vast *Wink

This is a recycled disk platter from the good old days

You would have to check the actual recorded figures for individual drives from usage statistics from various manufacturers, but generally a hotter running electronic device will last a shorter time than a cooler running one, and 3½ inch drives generally run cooler than 2½ inch.

Also an external drive will in most cases have a less efficient cooling system that one mounted in a regular PC case or even a laptop so would be likely to be under most heat stress

what is the usefulness of 3.5" hard drive?

2.5" drives are indeed smaller, lighter, and consume less power. But these things do not come without a price. 3.5" drives tend to be faster, have higher capacity, and are likely more reliable. Smaller drives are more complex to design and build and that means more compromises. A 2.5" drive platter has roughly half the surface area of a 3.5" drive so to achieve the same capacity you need to increase the recording density or have more platters. Neither of these is simple to achieve. The smaller power consumption of a 2.5" drive is largely a matter of necessity. These are designed largely for laptop use where power consumption is very important and the smaller size means heat is more difficult to dissipate. 2.5" drives usually run at 5400 RPM while 7200 RPM is typical of 3.5" drives. And there is more.

The situation with SSDs is quite different so most manufacturers produce only 2.5" drives which can be installed in a desktop with suitable mounting.
