Windows 10: What might've caused my backup drive to crash?

This morning I woke up to find that my backup drive had failed. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and Windows said there was a problem with the drive, and offered to scan & repair it, which it successfully did. It is a 2TB Seagate One Touch HDD SCSI Drive.Now I'm wondering what might've caused that to happen. I realize there are thousands of reasons, but this drive is less than a year old, and showed no signs of wearing out before this happened.I was downloading the files of one of my websites when it crashed. The download was expected to take 8 hours or so, so I let it run through th

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

 

GPU-Z 0.7.5 causing crashes on load up

Any chance you could narrow it down to which running application causes GPU-Z to crash? Ideally steps to reproduce for me here.

Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
