Windows 10: What was new with Google Cloud in May 2019

As May flowers bloomed, we watched our garden of blog posts grow. New features in Android phones and Gmail cropped up, and we’ve got some updates for cloud developers. Plus, check out photos and details about our new machine learning supercomputers. Here’s what was new.

Android phones help add security.

Android phones (versions 7.0+, Nougat) now come with a built-in security key. This is the FIDO type of security key, an industry standard that can be used for two-factor authentication—an extra verification step on top of a password that makes your sign-ins resistant to phishing scams.

Calendar now comes in dark mode.

When you’re looking at your Google Calendar, or at Keep, our task management tool, you can now see it in dark mode. This is nice in low light, for those of you checking the next day’s schedule in the dark, since it reduces screen brightness. Whether it’s enabled by default will depend on your version of Android and your settings. Plus, we announced the launch of Gmail confidential mode last month, so you’ll soon be able to send messages with built-in information rights management controls. This means you can create expiration dates and revoke sent messages, plus these messages can’t be forwarded, copied, printed or downloaded.

Supercomputers for machine learning arrived.

Machine learning (ML) can help with tasks ranging from image recognition to disease research and medical diagnoses. Machine learning requires data scientists to build a model and train it with examples so that the computer can eventually learn a pattern. This requires a lot of computing power. Super powerful and expensive data centers full of servers were not enough to handle the growth of AI workloads and computational horsepower, so we created TPUs, our own hardware chips, just for the purpose of speeding up machine learning. Now, those TPUs are publicly available in pods, which are essentially stacks of these TPUs linked together to form an AI supercomputer. Data scientists and researchers can use them to do machine learning tasks much faster, in minutes or hours compared to days or weeks previously. What cloud developers are learning about

Behind many of the apps and websites you use everyday are these things called APIs (short for application programming interface), which essentially allow these apps and sites to talk to each other. Think of a website that has a Google map embedded, for example—there’s an API in use there. API design is a hot topic among developers, since they have to make sure that different applications can all talk to each other to make a website or app run more smoothly for users. One popular post last month was about a newer way to design APIs that is simpler and requires less documentation for developers and software.

What was new with Google Cloud in April 2019

Spring was blooming as we welcomed thousands of people to our big annual event: Google Cloud Next ’19. We heard great stories about how customers are growing their businesses with cloud, and we planted the seeds for lots of new ideas and connections. Read on to catch up on Next and what else was new last month with Google Cloud.

We introduced our new cloud service.

Our big news in April, introduced by Sundar on stage at Next ’19, was Anthos, our open cloud platform. Anthos is a way for application developers to cut out the extra time they currently have to spend writing applications. For example, a developer might currently write code for an app running in their data center, and then have to rewrite it to work on another cloud, or in Google Cloud. Anthos lets developers package their code once, then run it across different types of clouds, which will save a ton of time.

There’s a new way to stash data in the cloud.

If you’ve ever had to track down an old email containing important information, you know how suddenly necessary that email becomes, even if you received it years ago. That’s the idea behind archive storage, which is a way for companies to store data for a long time, more cheaply than data they might need to access regularly. At Next ‘19, we announced a new type of cloud storage that will let companies store that data in a way that will let them access it right away if and when they need it. It’s like a digital storage unit, and could be particularly useful for companies that have to store data for legal or compliance reasons.

There are some new ways to crunch the numbers.

One popular way to use Google Cloud is for analyzing data. BigQuery is one of our cloud-based tools for storing data (known as a data warehouse) that can quickly store and analyze huge amounts of data. Companies can learn from the data and get new information that would be slow or difficult to get from traditional, non-cloud data warehouses, helping them make decisions and work more efficiently. These tools are popular and growing—the volume of data analyzed in BigQuery grew by more than 300 percent in the past year. We recently added new features that make it easier to get a company’s data into the cloud, and then to clean it up (by taking out duplicate information, for example) and organize it.

We wished Gmail a happy birthday.

Now that Gmail is 15, it lets you schedule when you send emails and reply to a Google Docs comment directly within an email thread (no more flipping back and forth). Plus, Smart Compose in Gmail is now available in Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.

122 other things happened at Next.

So many new products, features, and customer stories came out of Next ‘19 that we made a list of all 122 announcements from the show. The list starts with new regions coming online—those are new data centers that can help users get faster cloud access—and runs down all kinds of techie news. Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Today we’re pleased to share the following updates:

Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.

Spelling and grammar improvements in Google Docs for G Suite

Quick launch summary

Earlier this year we introduced a BETA for new grammar suggestions in Google Docs. Now we’re making this feature available for G Suite Basic, Business, and Enterprise users.

The new features enhance existing spell check functions and highlight possible grammatical errors in your text. We’re also introducing a revamped interface for reviewing spelling and grammar suggestions which makes it faster and easier to spot and correct errors in your text.

Some improvements you’ll see are:

Grammar

Possible grammar corrections will be underlined in blue. To see a suggested correction or dismiss the alert, simply right-click.

You will also see possible grammar errors when running a spelling and grammar check through the Tools menu.

New language review interface

You can easily review all language suggestions for your document with the updated spelling and grammar check tool. Access it through the “Tools” menu or right-click on a suggestion and select “Review more suggestions” — you’ll see each suggestion and actions to correct any errors.
